Finish It Up Friday ~ QOV

One of my goals for this month was to finish this Quilt of Valor. And it’s all done except for the label.

Still working on those machine bindings!

I used a panto from Urban Elementz called Malachite.

The standard Malachite panto is 10.75 inches wide. This one is 16 inches wide. Urban Elementz allows you to order pantos in custom sizes for a $2 up charge. Since my long arm, Friday, has a 24 inch throat, I can use larger pantos. So I decided to order a couple pantos in slightly larger sizes. I think it still looks good.

Here is a side by side comparison.

Obviously, the larger custom panto is a lot faster to quilt. It still gives great texture, but it also gives you a softer quilt.

Time to get that label done so this can be presented to a deserving veteran.

Another Tiny Doll Bed

I started this little rope bed not long after the first tiny bed I made. But I wanted to add a headboard and couldn’t figure out how. I finally decided to add the spool legs, make a mattress, and call it good.

Now I don’t think it even needs a head board! You can see my post about this little quilt here.

And here is my mattress made from a feedsack scrap.

The bed measures about 5 by 7 inches. This is the bottom side.

I love that this little quilt fit so well.

China

I need to find and prep more ties before I go any farther on that project. In the mean time, I pulled these out.

You may remember when Mr. Wonderful brought these fabrics back from China for me.

They are so beautiful and I want to be very careful about using them. I was paging through magazines and came across this one which has given me some ideas.

I love this idea.

And this one.

I love that these would showcase the fabric. I could also use every inch without wasting any. I have piles of books to look through yet, but these are my top picks for now.

Sometimes I find that I have to get a project out and put it away again a few times before I actually start cutting. That may happen here!

DWMonday ~ Back to the Ties

Remember the tie challenge for my local guild? I got this far and stopped. I haven’t been able to motivate myself to work on it. It’s okay. Just okay. I’d like it better with about 400 blocks, but that’s not going to happen.

I decided to bring the ties back out and see what else I could come up with.

I cut some rectangles of fusible web and applied them to the back of pieces of the ties.

Then I used these dies to cut out leaf shapes.

Time to take the paper off the back.

Then I’ll have a play at the design wall and see where this takes me.

I know I go on about my Accuquilt die cutter, but I really do love it. When I got it, it seemed such a luxury and I felt a bit guilty spending that much on it. The cutter and dies are not cheap! After all the issues with carpal tunnel, it now feels like a necessity. I have the Studio cutter and it allows me to keep cutting when I can’t use scissors or my rotary cutter for long.

Slow Stitching ~ Seven Sisters

I put the borders back on this top and basted it on m long arm.

This is the batting I’m using.

I picked this hoop with stand up at an estate sale a couple months ago. I thought the stand might relieve some stress on my hands and wrists when hand quilting.

And yes, I am again doing Baptist Fans! And I know that when hand quilting in a hoop, you are supposed to start quick in the middle. When quilting these fans, I prefer starting at the edge. I baste well on my long arm and haven’t had a problem yet.

This will be very slow going. I hope to get two fans per week quilted.

Pinterest Mini

I pinned this little doll quilt on Pinterest ages ago.

Last night I took some time to make one similar out of my vintage stash.

I don’t know how big the original is, I cut my quarter square triangles to make 3 inch finished blocks. Time to decide on my arrangement.

My colors are similar, though not the same as the original.

I used a bit of yellow feed sack for the back and some Mountain Mist Blue Ribbon cotton batting. Then I machine quilted it in a simple grid. I used a single fold binding.

I love how this little piece turned out!

I think this will look great with one of my toy machines.

A Very Quick Finish!

I purchased this baby quilt top at a yard sale this summer. Since I’m always needing baby quilts, I decided to get it finished up.

I love the 30s prints. Like my new gloves? These anti vibration gloves were recommended by my doctor to prevent further nerve damage in my hands. I’m supposed to wear them any time I’m using something that causes vibration. So that means when long arming.

I have small hands and these are a bit big. If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate it! The pantograph I used is called Yarn Tangle and it is available from Urban Elementz .

My machine binding is slowly improving. I found this backing fabric in my stash.

I was able to finish this up in no time at all since the top was already done for me! I hope the original maker would be pleased.

Work on Seven Sisters Begins

I have decided that this Seven Sisters Top will be my next hand quilting project.

You can probably tell that this top has some issues. Those borders are very friendly. See how much they wave?

And those “corners!” I decided to remove the borders and reapply them.

Look how much longer the borders were than the rest of the top!

That explains things! And this is why you should measure and cut your borders to size. That is my next job.

I do have a cute helper.

She has great taste in quilts.

One QOV Top Done and Another on the Wall

I finished this QOV top yesterday and got it loaded on the long arm.

I had four blocks leftover. I decided to see if I could use them with one of the panels I have. I sometimes struggle with panels because they are often not printed straight.
