I made three Quilts of Valor this year and all three have been awarded.

I also quilted upwards of 30 QOVs for the Stitching Sisters QOV group this year. I look forward to getting my next batch of tops to work on.

Finish It Up Friday ~ Swiss Crosses

On Christmas Eve, Lori at Humble Quilts , shared a tutorial for a small quilt called Swiss Cross. I decided to give it a go.

I wanted the large triangles to be the same as the background shirting, but I didn’t have enough.

The above two photos were taken before washing; these next two were after.

House Blocks for California Fire Survivors

I read about about a block drive to make quilts for those affected by the wildfires in California. You can find all the necessary info HERE.

The blocks are ten inch house blocks. I decided to fussy cut pieces for the windows.

This is a scrap from an old library print from Connecting Threads. Every town needs a library, right?

Oops! That’s not right!

Much better. I kept with the literary theme for my second block as well.

Bed Quilts 2018

It is time to look back over the last year and see what I accomplished in the sewing room. This will take several posts. First, the big ones!

I completed quite a few bed size quilts this past year. I think my total was thirteen. Having a long arm really helps in this department, although a couple were handquilted.

UFO Parade 2019

Happy New Year!

I’ve been searching high and low for all of my currents UFOs. Here is the list:

1. These blocks are from a swap hosted by Barb at Fun with Barb.

2. These blocks were eliminated from my Dear Betty quilt. The will make a good size lap quilt once they are done.

3. I cut these hexies out of my tiny, precious stash of Liberty of London fabrics. I should do something with them.

4. My four patch leader/ender project.

5. the QOV Mosaic Mystery. The blocks are done. This needs to be assembled and quilted.

6. This dreadful thistle applique. 😬

7. This was going to be the start of a throw quilt. It might end up a baby quilt.

8. These blocks have stalled out again.

9. This UFO is probably 25 years old. I think it would be fun to quilt once I decide how to finish the edges.

10. These are also very old. I just found them again. This is worth finishing.

11. Yet another Denise Schmidt fabric project. I started this two years ago.

12. I have a pile of these blocks now. I need to figure out where this is headed.

13. Yep, these are still here.

14. And this. The eternal UFO.

15. Finish these little Bow ties.

16. Finish the vintage top that I’m hand quilting.

17. Finish my Snowball quilt. There are more cut pieces than it looks in there.

18. Civil War tumbler quilt.

I wouldn’t be surprised to find a few more around here. Time to get these projects moving!

UFO Parade 2018 ~ Results

In January of each year, I like to take stock of all my UFOs. At the end of the year, I like to see how I did on finishing the items on that list. Here is a rundown on my UFOs from last year.

1. This is from the Row by Row patterns available last summer. Done!

2. I started these blocks over a year ago. I love them and need to get back to them. Well, I have made more blocks this year, but they are still just blocks.

3. Here is another long term project. Done!

4. This set of leader/ender blocks. Done!

5. I love this set of blocks! I have the border fabric and sashing ready to go. Done!

6. Hand quilting this redwork top. Done!

7. My Denyse Schmidt coffin top is still not done.

8. My Broken Dishes top from a swap with Fun with Barb. Done!

9. My 36 patch top. Done!

10. My 4 patch diamonds. Done!

11. I think this handpieced hexie top has been on the list for at least 7 years! Done!

12. I’ve known how I wanted to quilt a top made from these blocks ever since I got them. Time to get them into a top! Not done!

13. Another VERY long standing UFO. Not done!

So nine of the 13 got finished. Not too shabby! Of course, I have produced a few more UFOs this year and found a few older ones. I’ll have my updated UFO Parade for this year in an upcoming post.

Slow Stitching Sunday and Answers to Questions

Slow progress on my slow stitching.

I had questions yesterday about this photo.

Laura asked how I hang my stockings. I use stocking hangers to hold a curtain rod like this:

Since our family continues to grow, I don’t have to worry about my mantle looking like Swiss Cheese from all the thumb tack holes and I don’t need 15 stocking holders.

And Lori asked about the frame for my vintage flag. I built a frame out of 1 x2 pine boards and painted it black. Then I cut a piece of styrofoam insulation board so that it would fit tightly into the frame. Then I pinned my flag to the foam.

Christmas Decorating with Quilts

I’ll be taking down my Christmas decorations soon, but I thought I’d share them with you before I do. We kept things very simple this year since we were in Arizona for a good chunk of December. I put up this small tree. I use a vintage quilt for a tree skirt.

I got out several of of red and white quilts.

I didn’t put a garland on the bannister this year, so I displayed some red and green quilts.

This log cabin looked good in the front hall.

Christmas quilt on the back of the couch, handy for getting cozy.

And the stockings were hung b the chimney, with care!

I had small red and white quilts on the tables as well, but I forgot to take photos of those.

The great thing about minimal decorating, is that it won’t take long to put it all away. I may leave these quilts out for a while.

Finish It Up Friday ~ Half Hexies

I had several rows of this quilt put together before I left for AZ. Mr. Wonderful did all of the Christmas cooking so I was able to sneak down to the sewing room to do another row or two here and there.

After Christmas, I got the top quilted and bound.

I just love the texture this panto gives!

I used a layer cake of Nest by Moda and added a few bits from my stash.

The backing is a light gray.

This is the panto I used. I’ve used a version of this before. During the recent sale at Urban Elementz , I ordered this in a larger size. Apparently, I really love it. As I ended up accidentally ordering two.

I’ve decide that from now on when I gift a quilt, I’m just going to roll it up and tie it rather than wrap it. So much easier.

And finally, here is a shot of the whole thing.

I love how it turned out, even though these really aren’t my colors. No worries, I have a friend who has persevered through many challenges that I will gift it too. She is an inspiration to me. I’m hoping this will help her to feel loved as she recovers from a serious health challenge.
