Finish It Up Friday ~ Christmas Hexies

I finished the Christmas quilt for Daughter #1 a while back, but decided to wait to share it until closer to Christmas.

The big pieces made for a pretty quick finish. I’m glad as I wanted her to use it before the holiday itself. I used a panto from Urban Elementz called Malachite.

I bought all the fabrics from my local JoAnn’s. I love this backing fabric.

I finished the binding completely by machine this time.

Oops….I see a thread on that picture up there! I gave this to her Thanksgiving weekend so they could enjoy using it before Christmas.

Big E gave it his approval!

Have a great day!

Progress

Thank you for all of your kind comments yesterday. I think making quilts like this help one process. I know it is silly, but cutting his shirts up was the hardest part. It was like admitting to myself that he wasn’t coming back to wear them again. Once I got through that, the piecing went pretty quickly.

This is the pantograph I’m using from Urban Elementz .

I love how this is turning out!

Have a great day!

Memory Quilt

It’s been nearly six months since I lost my dad. I brought home a bag of about 30 of his shirts after the funeral. I’ve looked at the bag a few times, but haven’t been able to open it until this past week. I didn’t want to then, but I haven’t been able to think of anything else to give my mom for Christmas, except for a quilt. With the first snip of the scissors, the tears came.

And then this sweet girl jumped up to sit with me.

It took hours to cut apart all those shirts, but she never left my side until the last one was done.

Then she wandered off to play. It was like she knew I needed her and knew when the job was done. She is just the sweetest dog ever.

I decided to use the sleeves for this quilt, so I layered them up, pressing as I went.

I used this die and my Accuquilt die cutter.

Here are my piles of rectangles.

Time to design.

Have a great day.

Washing an Old Quilt

I shared this finish with you last week and mentioned that I washed it when I was finished. I wanted to show you how I washed this . First, I decided to wash this as it was dirty and I felt it was strong enough after quilting to withstand the process. Not all quilts are.

You can see how one of the fabrics bled onto others as the top was folded for many years.

I used these products for washing. Just a bit of each in my kitchen sink. If the quilt were larger, I would have used the bathtub.

I gently kneaded the quilt in the soapy water. Then I placed this plastic bin with water on top to keep the quilt submerged and left it to soak.

I repeated this process several times. Below you can see how gross the water was after each wash/soak.

After rinsing several times, I rolled the quilt in a towel to remove excess moisture.

Then I threw the quilt and towel in my dryer. The stains from the color bleeding didn’t wash out.

Overall, the quilt is brighter and definitely cleaner.

You really have to evaluate each quilt to see if it is safe to wash. I think this quilt lost some vibrancy in the green, but I’m still glad I did it.

Have a great day!

New GO! Die Set

I picked up this set recently on sale at Accuquilt . I have the studio cutter, but I can use these dies with an adaptor. This has dies that are not available in the studio version.

I thought I’d show you what is inside. It comes in a nice box with storage sleeves.

This is what’s inside.

Each die comes in a pocket with a pattern.

I was up early one morning this week and decided to play with this three inch signature block.

I used this Studio die for the Corner pieces.

I grabbed some scraps out of a bin to try these out.

This is all I had time for, but it was fun!

I think I’m going to enjoy this one! Check out all the Accuquilt deals here.

Have a great day!

My kids are home. My son flew in from Arizona with his two boys this week. Daughter #2 arrived last night from Texas. Daughter #3 and her hubby arrived in town from the west side of the state last night. Daughter #1 and her family are  here in town. I haven’t even taken the time to take many pictures yet, but here are a few. This was Big L’s first time seeing snow!

I have posts scheduled and will read comments, but won’t be good at answering for a while.

Have a wonderful day!

A Pinterest Project

I recently found a small quilt on Pinterest and recreated it using some of my vintage fabric scraps. You can see that post here. It was so fun, I decided to do another! This was the inspiration picture I found.

And here is my version done in vintage fabrics.

Here’s a side by side comparison.

That was so fun, I decided to do it again in 1930s repros.

How about modern prints?

And solids?

Here are all four together.

Here you can see the quilting on the back.

I have no idea what I will do with these, but they sure were fun to make. It is amazing to me how different they look done in different fabrics.

Have a great day!

Finish It Up Friday ~ Quick Baby Quilt

And just like that, it’s done!

I don’t often piece backings, but when I ran across these pieces in my stash, I knew it was meant to be!

The above pictures were taken before washing. The rest are after washing. I love how quilts crinkle up and get soft in the process!

I hope you enjoyed seeing this little quilt come together. I’ll be back tomorrow with another fun project.

Have a great day!

Baby Quilt Progress

This baby quilt pattern is so quick and easy and it will soon be done!

It quilted up quick as a wink.
I used this new pantograph to quilt it. Once I started, I decided I wasn’t in love with it. But that’s one of the great things about baby quilts, they are small!
I’m not great at binding by machine, but I’m working to get better at it. I have carpal tunnel and hand binding doesn’t help.
Come back tomorrow to see the finished quilt!

Have a great day!

My Go To Baby Quilt Pattern/Tutorial

It seems like every time I turn around, someone else I know is having a baby! I thought I would show you a quick way to make a baby quilt using just one charm pack and some background yardage. First, here are a couple baby quilts I’ve made with this pattern and gifted.

On to the tutorial. I got this charm pack free with a recent Craftsy order.

I’m going to cut 2 1/2 inch by 5 inch rectangles from both the charm pack and the back ground fabric. I love my die cutter and use it whenever I can, but I don’t have a die this size and shape. No worries. I cut 5 inch strips and placed them on my 2 1/2 inch strip cutter die like this.

That made quick work of things! Next I placed my charm squares on the same die. Those two off to the side were not needed, so I didn’t cut them.

Time to sew! I match up one background piece and one print piece and feed them through.

I ended up with 80 blocks to be set 8 by 10.

These blocks will measure 4 by 4 1/2 inches when sewn together. Time to throw them up on the design wall and play!

I think I’m gonna like this one too! Stay tuned.
