Cross Cut QAL

Debbie over at A Quilter’s Table recently hosted a little quilt along with a tutorial for her improv Cross Cut quilt. I think everyone else was about done with theirs by the time I jumped in!

The first step was to cut squares and insert strips.

Then you cut the other way and inserted more strips and sew them all together.

Then cut it up  into smaller squares, shuffle, and sewn back together.

I used several colors of thread for my matchstick quilting.

I was not in love with it, not enough to finish it as a small quilt. I might have liked it better if I  had stuck with all white thread.

So after thinking about it, I decided I might as well cut some more.

I added some folded pieces on each side of the back and bound it.

And did a pretty crappy job of that binding! I was rushing to finish before work. I always get my best ideas during a time crunch!

Anyway, time to add the notebook. This is just a standard black and white composition notebook.

Happily, it fit!

I loved  the versions of this done by other people. I think I was overthinking the cutting of my blocks. I also started with slightly different sizes than Deb recommended in her tutorial.

You can find many pics on Instagram of finished quilts under the hashtag #crosscutblocks. Or head over to Debbie’s blog to see some great finishes there.

Have a great day!

Finish It Up Friday ~ Military Mystery Quilt!

Spending just an hour a week over six weeks to make this top, made it seem effortless! Once I got the top done, I was quite motivated to get the quilting done as well.

I made my borders just a touch wider than the pattern called for.

This backing fabric is the same stuff I used on my Dear Betty quilt a few months back.

Alycia from Alycia Quilts was the mastermind behind this mystery. Check out her blog for  lots of pictures of beautiful Quilts of Valor!

Throwback Thursday ~ Labyrinth Quilts

I have been fascinated by labyrinths ever since I saw a picture of one in a book years ago. It was one of the things I most wanted to see when we lived in France. I searched every cathedral to see if there was one. My favorite? The one at Chartres, of course! And this quilt is patterned after that one.

I had a picture of the labyrinth from a book I purchased there and copied it onto transparency film. Then I used an overhead projector so I could trace the pattern onto a large piece of freezer paper taped to the wall. I very carefully cut out both the positive and negative parts. I ironed down the part with the “paths” onto the blue batik and then discharged the dye with bleach. It was hours and hours of prep work followed by a terrifying 5 minutes of discharge!

It is one of my favorite quilts that I have ever made. And what did I do with the other part of the freezer paper? I ironed it onto black fabric that was layered with a round tie dyed piece and stitched along the edges. Then I cut away the black to reveal the path. Then I quilted it to death to get it to lay flat. LOL

The next one is another one done with bleach discharge. This one has 7 circuit labyrinths. It is called The Long Dark Night of the Soul after the book of that title by St John of the Cross. It hung at the Sacred Threads exhibition in 2006 or so. It also hung in a local art show and brought home a nice cash award.

The next one was also a bleach discharge quilt. The border fabrics were purchased on a trip to Hawaii.

And the last one is pieced. It is a 9 circuit labyrinth.

I quilted a Celtic knot in the center.
Looking back at these pictures makes me want to make another!

I hope you enjoyed  this look back. Have a great day!

July/August Goals

This summer is over halfway gone. Where did it go? If you see it, please tell it to come back!

Here is a review of my July goals:

  1. Metropolitan Fair! Done!img_1087
  2. Finish the little EPP quilt that I started on my Arizona trip. Not done. But getting closer!
  3. 4 Patch Diamond top. Not done.
  4. Quilt any QOVs that come in. Done! I quilted 7 this month. Here are a few.img_7030img_7017 img_1053
  5. Figure out my next leader/ender project and get it ready to go. Sort of done….I used my hour glass blocks as leaders/enders. But I am nearly done with them and need to decide if I want to cut out more or find something new to do.img_7034
  6. Make a throw quilt for a wedding next month. Done!img_6663-1
  7. And just to make life interesting, I would like to at least start working on another UFO from my January list. Bahahaha!

What else did I accomplish?

I made one sweet little bag for Daughter #2. img_0921

I finished the next round of my Gwenny Inspired QAL. img_7201

And there was that bathroom renovation…. That was a huge time suck!

All in all, not a bad month. So what will August bring? Who knows, but this is what I hope gets done!

1. I want to get that darn EPP mini done! I’m sick of it!img_1259

2. I want to finish the Twist blocks and get that top done.img_6720

3.  I want to finish the Mystery Quilt 4 Military that Alycia has hosted over on the Yahoo Group. I have a recipient in mind for this and need to get it finished soon. img_1207

4. Finish the next round of my Gwenny inspired Medallion quilt. It would be embarrassing to host the link up and not have my part done!

5.  I have a denim jacket that I purchased and I want to machine embroider it. The biggest thing keeping me from this project is fear. Plain and simple. That darn embroidery machine scares me still!

6. Quilt any QOVs that come in.

I better stop there since I also have another Arizona trip on the books! Do you have goals for August?

Gwenny Inspired Medallion QAL Part 3 Reveal!

Humble QuiltsI shared this little teaser photo the other day to show you I had finally started working on the last round of my Gwenny Inspired Medallion QAL!

The theme this time was log cabins. That could be interpreted any way you wanted. It didn’t have to use actual log cabin blocks. I made some improv log cabin blocks for the corners, but went with just straight “logs” for the borders.

And here it is!

Honestly, it took me forever to decide what to do here! I used up a charm pack and some scraps to make the border and I am now quite pleased with it. It looks less formal now.

And now it is my turn to announce the theme for the next round! I’m so excited! Drum roll please…..the  theme will be……

STARS!

I think this book may be my very favorite Gwennie book.

And my favorite quilt in the book is this one:

Aren’t those stars awesome? Here is another quilt from the same book.

I loved these so much that I made a gazillion baby quilts with these wonky stars back in the day! I gave them all away but here are some pictures of pictures of quilts from years past.

I literally took pictures with my phone of the snap shots I took before I gave these away. That tells you how long ago I made these! LOL

So the challenge for this next round, is to create a border with the star theme. You could make your entire medallion into a star center or add stars in your borders. Heck, you could use star fabric! We will be linking up the results of this round here on September 1st.

But start sewing just yet! Hop on over to Lori’s blog, Humble Quilts, to see the results of the log cabin round that we just finished. Even if you don’t have yours complete, link up your progress. We want to see!

Have a wonderful day!

Slow Stitching Sunday

This was the only project I took with me during our travels last weekend. That way, I  HAD to work on it! I still don’t really enjoy English paper piecing. The good news is, I am nearing the finish line! I just have one more row to finish.

Here is a look at the back with most of the papers still in.

I have to decide if I am going to add more of the little squares around the outside edge. But I am already thinking about borders.

I love the fabric above. It was a gift from a sweet bloggy friend. I love the next piece too but it may be a bit too busy.

This one has too much cream in it.

The next one is more green than gray in real life.  I think it really makes the honeycomb pieces pop.

This gray isn’t bad either.

And I know I said I was done with EPP when this one was done….but I received a lovely gift in the mail from Ila (no blog), and I think it wants an EPP frame like my Brinton Hall quilt. What do you think?

Isn’t it gorgeous? Time to stop playing and start stitching.

Have a great day!

Saturday – Long Arm Quilting Decisions

As promised, here is my post explaining my thought process in choosing the quilting design that I did for this top. Here is a photo of it unquilted. I left it hanging like this for a few days as I pondered how to quilt it. Sometimes, I know immediately what I want to do with a quilt and sometimes I just don’t!

img_7259

My first thought was to custom quilt this. I often do that with tops that have printed panels in them. In this case, the flag is preprinted and the little blocks around the edge are as well. Such a great use of fabric! I loved this top!

But the  blocks left me perplexed. They are not big. The “pieces” are quite tiny. And yet, the blocks themselves are way too big to leave completely unquilted. Stitching “in the ditch”  around each piece was really not an option. It would have taken forever and the quilting would have been very dense. But those borders….I had all kinds of ideas for custom quilting those!

I just couldn’t reconcile the two in my head. I asked some other long arm quilters of QOVs and one lady said she would use a patriotic edge to edge or pantograph design.

Hmmm….I really hadn’t considered using a pantograph until that point, but that plan certainly fit with my timeline!  I have one patriotic panto. It says Honor, Bravery, Valor, and Courage on it. It is most definitely directional. But what is the top of this quilt? According to the rules of displaying flags, the blue field should always be to the upper left. That means the quilt is right side up in this orientation.

img_2616

But the recipient might not see it that way. Since it wasn’t abundantly clear, I felt a directional pantograph was not the answer.  I went looking for something that was definitely NOT directional. I also wanted something that would be more of a background design. Something that would allow you to see the printed blocks with out conflicting.  I also didn’t want a design where you could discern specific elements. I wanted to keep the focus on the pattern of the top, not on the quilting. I chose this:

It reminded me of the stripes of the flag waving in the wind. It looks good in either orientation. It shows up well and adds a design element in the unpieced borders, but you really don’t notice it at all in the blocks.

I think you can see what I mean in the photos below. I used a light gray thread on the top and back.

And here is another little timesaver tip for you. When I finished the last row of the panto, I had just a small bit left unquilted.

Instead of realigning the whole thing and quilting a partial row, I just filled in with freehand work.

I don’t think anyone will ever notice. Here is one last look at the completed quilt in its entirety.

If you hung in there with me for this long, thanks! And have a great day!

Finish It Up Friday ~ QOV Edition

These are the last two Quilts of Valor that I needed to get quilted for the Stitching Sisters group.  The first one is by Kathy. I love her use of printed fabrics and they helped me decide how to quilt this.

See that piano key border? It is printed that way! I love this fabric! I quilted each line and it looks like it is pieced. The same is true of the orange peel shapes in that border. I love the woven effect the striped blocks create.  I tried to enhance this by quilting in the white lines.

The center panel was quilted freehand. I love this one! And here is a look at the back. It is actually a lovely blue, but I couldn’t get a picture of the true color.

This next top also makes clever use of printed panels. This top was made by Cheryl. You might have guessed that I would custom quilt this one as well,

I spent a lot of time thinking about how I would quilt it, and in the end, I used a panto on it.

I have a number of readers that are newer long arm quilters. So I have decided to share a post tomorrow explaining why I decided to quilt this top in this way. So check back if you are interested  in my thought process for choosing this quilting design.

Have a great day!

Throwback Thursday ~ Vintage Tumblers

I’m still working on QOVs so here is another oldie from the closet. A lady from my quilt guild gave me a bag of vintage scraps many years ago. She knew I loved scrap quilts and that I would use them. And I did! This is one of the projects to come out of that bag.

I made this one when we lived in France in the late 1990’s. I remember quilting it on my vintage Singer 401 at the dining room table.

There are so many fun things to look at in this quilt!

In fact, I decided to make it a bit of a puzzle and wrote on the back things for the kids to look for.

Sorry to gross you all out with some stains! My kids used this quilt when they were not feeling well!

For the binding, I just pulled the backing around to the front and top stitched it down.

It has some construction issues, but I  still love this quilt. I think I should get it out the next time I am feeling under the weather.

Have a great day!
