Quilting for a Friend

My friend, Donna, brought this top to me to quilt for her. Isn’t it lovely? She is fairly new to quilting, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at her quilts. She is good!

See what I mean? I quilted it with a design from Urban Elementz called Chaparell.

Here is a peek at the back:

This quilt will be sold in a silent auction to benefit H.I.S. Restoration Ministries.

Have a great day!

Tuesday ~ Block Day

After cutting the   2 1/2 inch squares I needed for my Gwennie Medallion quilt, I was able to start piecing my star blocks.

Along with the squares, I pulled out these little bins of leftover triangles to use for the points.

Since I was working on these, I used my Twist blocks as leaders/enders for the stars and the stars as leader/enders for the Twist blocks!

If all goes according to plan, I should be done with this set soon.

My pile is definitely growing!I just need to get another audio book started.

Have a great day!

Pets On Quilts 2016 ~ Dog on Quilts Category

Pets on Quilts 2016

I am not a dog person. But I have a dog. He’s been around a very long time, 14 years. We understand each other. He is completely silent while I drink my morning coffee. I like this about him.

I also have a couple of adorable grand dogs owned by Daughter #2 out in AZ. Her older dog is called Bambi. A while back, I made a quilt for Daughter #2 and a small matching quilt for Bambi. Here is a series of pictures I took when I gave Bambi her little quilt. She loved it!IMG_4269 IMG_4265 IMG_4263

Is she not adorable? She is the sweetest dog ever. I couldn’t think of any better pictures for the Pets on Quilts link up (dog on quilt category!) over at Lilypad Quilting. BTW, that last photo is my official entry photo, but I had to share the series with you! Head on over to see more pictures of pets enjoying quilts!

Quilting Progress

I’ve been making slow progress on my Grant and Lee quilt. I’m loving the borders, but I’m not so crazy about the corners.

But it will do. I went with circles on the black border. Some are a bit misshapen! Lol!

Someone suggested orang peeks in the blocks and I went with it.

I hope to have this finished by next Friday.

Have a great day!

Finish It Up Friday ~ Honeycomb!

This darn thing is finally done! According to my blog, I started this on June 8th, just before my last trip to Phoenix. It feels like I have been working on this a lot longer than that! It is a very small quilt. It finished at about 23 inches square.

I wanted to quilt it simply so the piecing design would be the thing you noticed. I quilted this on my Bernina 1030 with a walking foot. I thought I would show you how I marked this. I started with a fairly large grid of about 2 1/4 inches. I was aiming for the center of the squares so I didn’t mark that interior of the quilt. But I needed to mark the borders so it wouldn’t go too wonky on the sides. I made creases in the fabric to follow.

And this is the tool I used. I think it is actually a point turner, but it works.

After this grid was quilted, I quilted another grid halfway between the lines of the first.

Not enough quilting for me! I did the same thing a third time so the quilting ended up at just a hair over a half inch apart.

That’s better.

Both the border and the binding fabric are what I call “nothing” prints. They appear solid from a distance and there isn’t anything really distinguishable about them But they are so very useful. These are the fabrics that make others really pop. I grab them whenever I see them.

The quilting really shows up in this next picture.

Here’s a peek at the backing fabric, a very old piece from my stash.

But a quilt is never done until it is washed and so I did. And it crinkled up quite nicely.

It hides my not so very straight lines!

The light was coming in just right to really capture the texture here.

You can tell when I am really glad  that something is done, I take more pictures of the finishes I am most happy to have off my list

That texture there? That is why I like lots of quilting!

Have a great day!

This and That Thursday

I can hardly believe it myself, but this darn EPP Honeycomb quilt is finally almost done!

I posted this picture on IG yesterday and said I was at the point of hating it. I come to that point with nearly every quilt I make. In this case, I am not happy with the quilting lines that look like they should be in the ditch between the dark and light pieces. If I had dined for the ditch, the spacing would have been off. Not that my spacing is exactly “on.” It will be better when my nose is more than 6 inches away.

I went to Joann’s the other night to get a new thimble. I realized when I was there that these new Tim Holtz fabrics were 60% off with a coupon!

I’ll be making a very special Quilt of Valor in the next few months and these fabrics will be my starting point. BTW, the thimble I bought was the wrong size.

I know it has been very hot in places around the US this summer, but check out these temps:

At midnight in the far away country where Daughter #2 is, the temp was 93 degrees F, but felt like 113 with the humidity factored in. I find it funny that the weather app on my phone calls this “wind chill.” I am not going to complain about heat.

Hubby changed the oil in Daughter #1’s car last weekend. Big E was such a helper!

And lastly, has anyone ever seen this before?

He is only about 3-4 inches tall. It appears to be an early Mickey Mouse figure. Japan is stamped on the back of his neck. I found it in a bag of finger puppets I bought at a yard sale recently.

How’s that for a random collection of thoughts? LOL

Have a great day!

WIP Wednesday ~ Grant and Lee

I finished the top and got this loaded into the frame. Now I am rather stumped on the quilting.

I was leaning toward a feather border….I know, I know….not again! LOL

But then I started playing around with  some of my rulers and I think I have a better idea.

This is the ruler I will be suing for the curves. I have a set of these curved templates by Linda Hrcka of The Quilted Pineapple

Now to figure out what to do in the middle. I swear it takes me longer to figure out what to quilt, than the actual quilting!

Antique Quilts

Hubby had a couple meetings in Detroit yesterday and I tagged along for the ride. We stopped on a little antiques hope on the way home and found these lovely items.

This top was my favorite, but way out of my budget.

This one had some fun fabrics!

This quilt was simply amazing!the fabrics are late 1800s and the quilt was in incredible condition. That tiny binding was so narrow and so neatly done with ting hand stitches.

I couldn’t help but wonder about the woman that made this.

I’m not sure what to say about this jacket!

I kind of wanted to cry when I saw it.

Nothing followed me home, but it was fun to look.

Have a great day!

DWMonday ~ Grant and Lee

I just love this panel that I recently received as a surprise gift!

As I started thinking about what to do with it, I remembered these 9 patches I had from a swap a few years ago.

These finish at 3 inches, so I trimmed the panel and added borders to get the math to work out evenly.

That border fabric has been in my stash for a VERY long time! I think it was from Fons and Porter’s very first line! I cut some plain blocks from some repro shirting fabrics and then I started playing around with a layout.

I might need to make a few more 9 patches, but I have to try not to go too crazy. I want this to be a wall quilt. Lately, it seems that I want to make everything into a bed quilt!

Have a great day!

Slow Stitching

I am doing a wee bit of slow stitching this morning before church.

But I’m keeping this little project under wraps for a bit yet.

I haven’t made much progress on this. Mainly because it is so easy to avoid. Tomorrow I’m taking a little road trip with the mister. I plan to take this and nothing else so I will have to finish it.

Hope you have a wonderful day!
