2016 Wrap Up Part 1 ~ Bed Quilts

I like to do year end wrap up posts so I can have all my finishes logged in one place. Since I’m not home with my computer, it isn’t as easy to organize this year. Rather than not doing it at all, I’m just going to have one post of bed quilts, and one or two with everything else. These finishes are in no particular order and without commentary.
These are completely finished projects only. The tops I have made , but not quilted are not included. Here goes:

More to com. Have a great day!

DWMonday ~ HSTs

A while back, I started sewing these HST blocks together. They will finish at 4 inches.

They are all Denyse Schmidt prints and white fabric from Ikea. I finished making all the HSTs, but then I had to trim all the dog ears.

Finally,  I could start playing. I like this simple layout.

I also tried this layout. It was trickier than you might think to get everything in the correct position. I’m still not sure everything is quite right. Nope, just noticed a few things out of place.

Not sure I like this with scraps. I’m going to leave it on the wall for a few days and see if it grows on me.

Have a great day!

Slow Stitching Sunday

My sister arrived yesterday. We will get lots of talking done over the next week or so! And today, I have a wee bit of hand stitching to work on while chatting and drinking coffee.

Have a wonderful day!

Finish It Up Friday ~ Broken Dishes

This past fall, Barb from Fun with Barb, held a block swap. The swappers all made broken dishes blocks. The group I was in all used red Civil War prints and muslin backgrounds. I am happy to say that my top is done!

I loved looking through all the beautiful blocks! Barb kindly readdressed my package and it arrived in AZ soon after I did. That was a happy mail day!

Quite some time ago, I saw a vintage quilt with this setting and I really wanted to do that with these blocks.

My plan began coming together when I found this Downton Abbey print on clearance while out shop hopping with Zenia and Kelly.

Then it was time to start cutting! I bought all they had left of the above print and used nearly every inch that I had.

I love how this turned out! I had a couple extra blocks and I plan to use them on the back.

Thanks to Barb and all the swappers for another great exchange!

Have a great day!

This and That Thursday

It feels like a miscellaneous week. I’m trying to take care of a myriad of little things. I did spend some concentrated time finishing up a top secret quilt top that I won’t be able to share until spring. But I can show you this lovely little quilt.

Remember how I said I gave some blocks away that were on my UFO list? Karen made the lovely quilt shown above out of my leftovers and donated it to the Palliative Care unit at her local hospital. Great job, Karen!

I made a couple pillow cases for Big L and Little L out of this:

I will be taking them over to them today. I got these two cuties groomed this week.

Because, drum roll please, Daughter #2 is coming home in about one month! Woo hoo! A huge thanks to all who have prayed for her during her deployment! It isn’t over yet, but the end is in sight!

My sister will be arriving on Saturday so I am also getting ready for her visit. This will be the most time we have had together since high school! Shenanigans will ensue! Such as this:

Hubby is back home so I sent him the following picture text message this morning. You can see his response.

I guess I better behave then! Lol! Have a great day!

Shopping!

There is a huge sewing/Quilt shop here in Phoenix called 35th Ave Fabric World Sew and Vac. The building used to be a grocery store, so you know it is huge! They had an end of year clearance sale and everything in the store was at least 30% off. Not gonna lie, I splurged.

First off I got some of this Polka Dots and Paisleys fabric to go with the two jelly rolls I have.

I could not believe their sale included Handi Quilter accessories and I’ve been wanting these for a long time!

This ruler has also been on my wish list.

A few fat quarters found their way into my bag.

And two mini charm packs that were 45% off.

I better not go back there any time soon!

Have a great day!

Scrappy Fence Rail Q&A

I have had many questions regarding my Scrappy Fence Rail Quilt that I shared last Friday. So I thought I would take a post to share a bit more about it and hopefully answer your questions.

First of all, I was asked what I meant by leaders/enders. Bonnie Hunter has a great explanation on her site here. She has written a couple books on this topic as well. Basically, I would sew a pair of rectangles together at the beginning and end of each seam while working on a different project. I do this instead of leaving long thread tails that have to be trimmed later. I could sew on and off of the same scrap of fabric over and over, but then I just end up with something that gets thrown away. If I have a bunch of pieces cut, I am actually making progress on a project as well as saving thread and trimming.

For this project, I sewed pairs of rectangles together to get squares like this:

After I had a pile of these, I would take a break from the other project I was working on and made a block or two like  this:

It was important to orient the lights and darks in the same way for each block. Each rectangle was cut at 2 by 3 1/2 inches. I used my die cutter for this. Here is the die I used:

I made 49 blocks and added a 6 inch border so that my quilt top ended up 96 inches square. The majority of the fabrics here are Civil War repros.
I used the same die for the scrappy rectangles quilt I finished last summer.

No Civil War fabrics there! In this case, I chose anything that was NOT Civil War repro fabric. This quilt was put together essentially the same way as the Fence Rail quilt. However, each block was pieced with all the rectangles in the same orientation.

Here is a picture of a single block:

I hope this helps! Have a great day!

December/January Goals

December has flown by! Here are the goals I listed for this month:

1. I want to finish Daughter #2’s QOV top. Not done! I made significant progress, but this is going home with hubby. I decided to make it bigger and want to use my die cutter for the rest.
2. Finish my mini Dresden Fan. Done!

3. Finish the 30s Ohio Star top. Done! I will add borders when I get home.

4. Make something out of the Minnick and Simpson jelly rolls I brought with me. Not done!
And here are my other finishes for the month. My favorite is my Scrappy Fence Rail.

I made a mini quilt for a thank you gift.

I made a Quilt of Valor top.

And I finished my Sea Sick Scrappy Trips top.

I also finished a top from my Broken Dishes swap blocks. I will share that finish soon.

I have a week between the time hubby leaves and Sister #1 arrives.

1. I want to finish the grad top I started with my Doe charm packs.

2. I must get that puzzle top done!

3. I want to start a top using my Quick Curve Ruler from Sew Kind of Wonderful and these fabrics:

I think that will keep me busy and no doubt, I will find other things to distract me along the way!

Have a wonderful day!

UFO Parade 2016 ~ Results!

Last January, I posted the following UFO list. I wanted to finish every item on this list. Here is how I did:

  1. I cut these triangles ages ago when cleaning out a bin of bright fabrics. These 6 inch HSTs will be made into Quilts Beyond Borders. Done! I made three quilts from the remaining triangles and sent them off to QBB. img_3198IMG_3880IMG_3875
  2.  These  blocks were from a guild exchange last year. DONE!img_3164
    3. These 4 orphan Noteworthy blocks. Done! Sort of… I gave this UFO away so I am done with it!
    4. More guild exchange blocks. Done!img_4487
    5. Even more guild exchange blocks. These are destined to become a Quilt of Valor. But not by me! I handed these off to a member of the Stitching Sisters QOV group. I know she will make something beautiful out of them! I call that DONE!
    6. This isn’t quite a UFO. I bought this ruler and intended to try it out on the two layer cakes shown below. They are both Heather Baily lines and they look great together. I have been intending to do this for so long that it feels like a UFO! Not done! But on my list for this month.

    7. I cut these tumblers in November 2015. Done! Well, the top is anyway!

  3. 8. As if I don’t have enough UFOs of my own, I collect vintage UFOs! Done!img_1758

9. Now we are looking at carryover projects from the year before. But this time, Metropolitan Fair got finished!img_1089

10. I’m still working on this hexie top. I recently cut a few more pieces. I do know how I want to quilt this so that is motivating me to get this done. Still not done!IMG_1801

11. This is moving up to the top of the list. I need a full day to get a good start on it. It isn’t a project I want to do a little at a time. Done!IMG_1718IMG_9573

12. I  think I know where I want to go with these stars and have setting fabric set aside. Done!
img_2773

13. I love these blocks! I have had a hard time figuring out how to deal with their vastly varying sizes. Instead of doing something I will regret, I have been letting this simmer. Not done!IMG_1722

14. Sigh….I have so fallen out of love with these blocks. My design wall is not near big enough for this project. But I don’t need the whole wall to start playing so I need to get to it.IMG_1711

15. Yeah, these are still here too. Done! Sort of! I used these in my Gwennie Inspired Medallion.IMG_1720

img_8903

16. I nearly forgot my Brinton Hall quilt! Done!img_6503-1

So ten of 16 are completely done. Two more are finished tops. I’m calling that pretty darn good. I need to make a new list for this year, but that will be another post.

Happy New Year!

Finish It Up Friday ~ Scrappy Fence Rail!

I have a big finish to share today! My leader/ended top is all sewn together!

I’ve really enjoyed making this! Scrappy is my favorite color scheme!

I noticed after I took the above picture that a few of my combinations didn’t have as much contrast as they should have. They are staying now!

I liked this next picture, it looks a bit like a quilted house! That’s the back neighbors roof showing over the wall.

Here you can see it in a queen sized bed.

There’s quite a generous amount on the sides. It currently measures 96 inches square.

I can’t wait to quilt this up! I’m thinking it needs Baptist fans…..but reserve the right to change my mind. Lol!

Have a wonderful day!
