I changed my mind…

I still haven’t come up with a quilting plan for Val’s QOV. So I loaded Greg’s QOV instead because I knew right away what I wanted to do with it.

I’m using this pantograph by Jessica Schick. I hope to finish this today.

I got the rows of the lattice quilt together as well.

Now to decide in borders.

WIP Wednesday

As usual, I have several things in process all at the same time. I am 4 seams from having the lattice blocs together and have started thinking about the quilting. I want to do another custom job on this.

I hope to have the rows together before work at noon.

I am also contemplating how to quilt this beautiful QOV top made by Val, a member of the Stitching Sisters QOV group.

I’d like to get this loaded to night.

And I will end this post with a very important PSA. There are times when these things do not mix well.

Do NOT throw your phone in the washing machine with your quilt! My phone is currently sitting in a tub of rice, hoping it will dry out in a few days. I am praying it will be resurrected.

This and That Tuesday

Good Morning! It took much of the day, but I was able to finish the quilting on the Little Sister quilt. Since these are leftovers from the quilt I made for my big sister, it seemed an appropriate name. Better than Leftovers! Here’s a sneak peek:

This kind of quilting takes me a very long time! I got the binding attached and spent some quiet time hand stitching last night.

I started stitching lattice blocks together this morning. But before I started, I had to re-press some seams. I originally pressed the all the scrappy rectangles toward the red and blue triangles like this.

I re-pressed the seams away from  the blue triangles. Now those seams will nest well when putting blocks together.

I would like to get all the rows sewn before work.

Yesterday I met one of the gals from the Stitching Sisters QOV group and picked up three more tops to quilt. I also ordered batting. JoAnns has 40% off all batting right now and you can get 15% off and free shipping on top of that. I ordered two of their Pellon 70/30 20 yard bolts.

Have a beautiful day!

Design Wall Monday

Most of my design work this weekend was at the frame. I wanted to try out some curved cross hatching in this quilt. I decided to surround it with feathers to fill in the space.

I like the curved crosshatch but am less thrilled with my feathers. I will not rip them out. Too much work. This is taking quite a while but I think it will be worth it in the end.

I still have these lattice blocks up on the wall. I hope to start sewing them together this week.

I went to a small antique market with hubby yesterday. I found this piece of vintage fabric.

Denyse Schmidt reproduced this fabric, changing the scale and color way, in her Flea Market Fancy line. Given my love for her fabric lines, I was quite pleased to find this bit of her original inspiration.

Slow Stitching Sunday

I finished the next hexie ring and got it appliqued to the background for my Brinton Hall quilt.2015/08/img_3767.jpg

I also am nearly done basting the hexies for the rest of the rings. I need to decide on the fabric for the paths between these blocks. 2015/08/img_3768.jpg

No progress on the quilting of the leftovers quilt yesterday. Maybe today!

Custom Quilting

Good Morning! I started quilting the small quilt made with leftovers from the sister quilt this week.

I got it loaded and then it spent several days just sitting there. I just could not decide how to quilt this one. I wanted to practice custom quilting using some of my rulers and templates. Thursday evening, I finally started.

I used a large oval template to create the arcs and free handed the feather. I then added the straight lines a bit less than an inch apart.

And no, it doesn’t show up much on this fabric! That’s okay, my mistakes won’t show either. My feathers got pretty tiny in the corner.

I knew I wanted to do continuous curve quilting in the squares but since the border is so precise, I wanted the curves to be as well. So I used a small circle template.

And yes, this does take me a long time! But I do like how it is turning out. And it is definitely time to do more of this kind of quilting. The only way to improve is by pushing myself to do the hard things.

Yesterday, I took Daughter #3 down to the U of M Medical Center in Ann Arbor for an issue with her knee. We saw these lovely quilts hanging there. Sorry for the bad pictures, they were framed under glass. The workmanship was amazing!

I’m off to work this morning. I hope you all have a lovely day!

Finish It Up Friday

Instead of my hero, Spidey has been my nemesis this week! But in the end, I think I won. It isn’t perfect, but I think my little guy will like it. After all, he loved the panel when I got it home from the store!

It was probably big enough to create a twin size quilt! But I wasn’t that ambitious. Besides, he needs a drag around quilt, not a bed quilt. This panel must not have been licensed, do you see that is says “Spider Hero” instead of Spider Man? LOL
This is the furry throw blanket I purchased at a Ross store to use for the backing. It was a whopping $7.99.

I had some trouble with the furry stuff poking through to the top but I persevered and in the end, washing helped.

I tried to take my first pictures too early in the morning and the light was terrible!
Between the furry backing and the poly batt, it  sure turned out fluffy!

My Avante never had an issue quilting with this. I ended up binding it on my vintage Singer 301 instead of my Bernina though. For some reason, it does NOT like this kind of backing fabric. When I tried binding the last quilt I used this stuff on, I threw it out of time and had to get it repaired! So the binding is kind of wonky but it will have to do.

I made a pillow case to go along with it.

With all it’s issues, I am sure this little guy will love it. He seems to really appreciate quilts. He inspected many of mine when he was here at Christmas!

It should arrive in the mail for him on Saturday.  I can’t wait! I love this little guy!

Throwback Thursday

Two posts in one day, crazy, I know! But there is a new linky party and I love to see what others have done in the past, so I decided to jump in. This quilt was made around 1998. I remember making this when we lived in France.

Please  excuse the fold lines! I quilted this on my vintage Singer 201. That fancy border quilting was a total waste because it doesn’t show on the front at all! The top was machine pieced and a great opportunity to work on y seams. As I recall, I had to quilt this baby into submission!

It was a cover girl for the 2005 issue of Quilt Almanac.

I used to do quite a bit of freelance stuff for The QUILT family of magazines. Until they changed editors. Here is a shot of the inside.

I used to get such a kick out of the “quotes” they attributed to me. Most were things I had never said!  Now and again I would be asked to write the article to go with the quilt I had made, but when I didn’t, it was always a funny surprise to see what I had said.

Leaders/ Enders

I’ve been trying to decide on another leader/ender project but I am having a terrible time coming up with something! I would like something more long term than the quick projects I’ve done before. Bonnie Hunter does a Leader/ Ender challenge every year and this year has chosen the tumbler to work on. You can find out the details here.

I love tumbler quilts and I even have a die for my cutter which makes this idea even more appealing. The question is, what fabrics/theme do I want to go for? Daughter #1 bought most of these Downton Abbey charm packs for me for Christmas and I’m toying with using them for tumblers.

The two fabrics on the left were bits I found at SAS Fabrics when I was in Phoenix. I decided to place a tumbler cut with my die on top of a charm square to see how much fabric waste there would be.

There is definitely some waste there. When I use precuts, I try to use every sliver so this bothers me. But I haven’t come up with an idea I like better. This indecision means that I have gotten out these charm packs and put them away countless times!

By the time I make a decision, I probably could have a whole quilt pieced!

Honestly, I think part of my problem is that I hate to take apart these neat,  little packages until I am sure how I want to use them. And yet, that is likely the only way to be sure. Clearly my OCD is getting the better of me and I am over thinking this.

WIP Wednesday

I feel like I am finally getting back into the groove sewing wise after our trip. I finished off Spider Man (sounds ominous!). I will show him to you on Friday. I need to get him shipped off today.

I got these leftover blocks sewn together and the border added.

Then I noticed this:

I hate when that happens! But I am leaving it. This currently measures 52 inches square. I am playing with an ipad app called Adobe Ideas to help me decide how to quilt it.

You are basically drawing with your finger tip with this app. And clearly, I am not good a that! But it does help to visualize the quilting.
