What was I thinking?

I mentioned yesterday that I had more 9 patches for another baby quilt top.

Not sure what I was thinking here with this layout… It would have made more sense to have the Reds and aqua  across from each other.I’ll blame it on the cold meds and feeling under the weather this past weekend. I made more snowball blocks too. These make for a rather chaotic top!

I thought about just using the 9 patches like this:

But I would either have a very small quilt or I would have to make more blocks. I’d like to get this done so I can load and quilt both of these at the same time so I will probably stick with the first crazy option.

Design Wall Monday

I used to make lots of 9 patch quilts. It was my go to pattern for baby quilts because it was so easy and fast with strip piecing. It is even easier with my die cutter. I decided to make another baby quilt to have on hand. I’m using fabric from a bundle I purchased on clearance from Connecting Threads a few years ago.

I use my 2 1/2 inch strip cutter for the 9 patches. I’m also using the GO! Snowball die for alternate blocks. I have an adaptor so I can use GO! dies with my studio cutter.
This is turned sideways. Just 5 long seams and this top will be done.

You may remember that I made another quilt from this bundle last year.

I must have really liked this as I have another half yard bundle of this in my stash still to use! There will be at least one more 9 patch coming from this. The 9 patches are cut and ready to assemble.

Slow Stitching Sunday ~ Brinton Hall

I got both side strips added! And I am filling in hexies on the top and bottom now. After that is done, I can think about the borders. Just for fun, here is a picture of the back. A few of the paper hexies have fallen out but most are still in there.

This will be a nice bit of hand stitching to work on after Easter dinner today.

Quilting Tip!

I use templates with my long arm and this tip pertains to that, but it could also be used for rotary rulers and templates as well. This tip was shared with me by Deb over at Quilts N Things Done by Betty Boop.

Here is a border on a quilt I recently quilted. I used a swag template made by Handi Quilter to achieve this design.

Most of my long arm rulers I want to slide over my quilt top. But some templates I want to stay in a very specific spot, so they need a little griping help. For that, I use a little Mob Grip. This product is designed for use on skateboards.

I just cut little bits, maybe a quarter inch, and place it on the back of the template. It has a peel and stick backing. I use 2-3 little bits on each.

I bought this roll on Amazon and it will probably last forever.  Just for fun, here is a little video of me stitching out this border design. I hope it works!

Finish It Up Friday ~ Goose in the Pond

I give up. I have waited forever for a decent day to take pictures of this quilt outside. It is always too wet, too rainy, too snowy, too dark….. So here are inside pictures.

This quilt began with blocks made for a local guild exchange.

I finally got the top finished in February,  except for the borders. I found the border fabric in Arizona and finished that earlier this month. I purchased a large Baptist Fan stencil from Barb over at Fun with Barb. You can read all about the marking and quilting on this post.

And (drum roll please!) here is the finished quilt!

I love the giant fans!

I used a polished cotton sheet from Ikea for the back.
I made my share of wobbles and bobbles.
But I am thrilled to have this finished and finally have a new quilt on MY bed!  Yay for finishing big quilts!

New Dies

I recently ordered some new dies for my Accuquilt Studio cutter. These are called “nested” dies and you get multiple sizes of the same shape in one set. The set on the left are the dies with blades, the set on the right below are blanks.
I also ordered a set of nested equilateral triangle dies.

To use them, you choose the size die you want, and then fill in with the blanks. below I have chosen to use the hexagon with one inch finished sides. This is the smallest one. The set includes hexies in one inch increments up to 7 inches on a side.
I cut some pieces out to try this out.  This is the smallest triangle sitting on the smallest hexie.
I cut just 20 hexies and started piecing.

Below you can see that I have them all pieced into rows. Is this looking familiar?

I treated this the same way I did the equilateral triangle mini I made last month. I sliced it straight down.

 And put it back together.
After adding borders, I was ready to quilt. I have to say I didn’t do any pinning and didn’t work all that hard at matching points. I am coming down with a cold and didn’t want to think too hard when I was making this!
And here it is quilted in a hanging diamonds pattern. I did this with my walking foot on my Bernina 1030.
I wanted to use this leftover piece of binding and it was just a tiny bit short so I added in a little piece of a different red. The back:

And this is what it looks like after washing. The finished mini measures about 11 by 13 inches.

I think I could make some nice mug rugs with just 9 hexies this way.

Have a great day!

Quilts of Valor Part Two

Here are the rest of the QOVs that I quilted last weekend. Again, these tops were all pieced by members of the Stitching Sisters QOV group. I just quilted them.

Have a wonderful day!

Quilts of Valor

First of all, THANK YOU! for all the advice concerning my design wall. You’ve given me much to think about. In the past, I used the back side of a dollar store table cloth. It worked better than the Warm and White. It is, as some mentioned, getting pilly and it is difficult to remove the threads with a lint roller. I love the idea of having a grid on my wall. I will let you all know what I end up doing.

I picked up several tops from the Stitching Sisters QOV group last week and spent most of the weekend quilting them up. Here are the first three I finished form this batch.

The quilting doesn’t show on this backing, but I sure love this fabric!

I’ll show the last three in another post. Have a great day!
