February/March Goals

Here are the goals I set for myself for February.

1. Quilt 5 QOVs. Done!

2. Make one baby quilt. Not done!

3. Finish hand quilting the vintage top I’ve been working on. Not done!

4. Finish the QOV Mosaic Mystery quilt. Done! Or at least my version is done. Lol!

5. Make my allotment of string blocks for the string along. Done!

What else did I do?

I made my little Tree of Life quilt.

I finished my hand towel project for the Fat Quarter Shop blog hop.

On to March, which I sincerely hope goes out like a lamb.

1. I’m working on another Fat Quarter Shop project that needs to be done this month.

2. Ten string diamonds for the string along.

3. Finish my album block quilt.

4. Start another I Spy quilt for E3s birthday.

Finish It Up Friday ~ God Bless America QOV

Well, this doesn’t look anything like I had planned!

But I love how these blocks worked so well with this panel. I think it gives it a layered look.

I think the panto gives a great texture.

And I have blocks left over for another Quilt of Valor.

Have a great day!

Fat Quarter Shop Remix!

The Fat Quarter Shop is having a Remix blog hop today. A Remix is where they take one of their tutorials and mix it up with new fabrics. This kitchen hand towel is the project for today.

I’ve wanted/needed a couple of these for a while now so I jumped at the chance to try out their pattern. You can find the video tutorial here and the downloadable template here. I decided to go with a patriotic theme.

Here is the template.

I traced mine onto freezer paper using the sewing lines instead of the cutting lines. Then I ironed it to the back side of the top fabric.

I sewed next to the freezer paper.

After stitching, I cut mine out.

You’ll want to watch the quick video for all the details.

I learned a lesson about directional fabrics here. Oops!

One towel will make two of these so I went ahead and doubled up.

I didn’t add as many pleats to the towel as suggested in the tutorial and I probably would next time. I would also top stitch closer to the edge. I think it would be fun to make holiday versions of these.

A big thanks to Fat Quarter Shop for the free pattern!

Have a great day!

Album Block

Remember these?

I decided I was done piecing these blocks and that I wanted to get them into a top.

I plan to set with alternate blocks made from these two fabrics.

I’m trying to decide on the layout.

I posted these two possibilities on Instagram and most people voted for the second.

I talked to my sister on the phone later in the day and she said, “You’re going with the first one, aren’t you?”

She knows me well.

Have a great day!

DWMonday ~ Mosaic Mystery

One of my goals for this month was to finally finish the Mosaic Mystery hosted by Alycia last fall. I had the blocks done, but put it all away to focus on things with deadlines.

The cool thing about these blocks, is that there are so many ways to arrange them.

I use all Stone Henge fabrics and remembered that I had a couple panels that would match.

I like the second one best but decided it needed some breathing room.

Like so many panels, this one is printed crooked. Ugh. Hopefully it will be less noticeable when it is quilted and washed. Now, what should I add next?

Have a great day!

Slow Stitching Sunday

I’ve had a bit of a sore wrist this week, so not much slow stitching has been done. But here is an update on this quilt anyway.

This quilt has 30 full white blocks, as shown above, and 30 claret blocks, as shown below.

So out of a total of 60 whole blocks, I have 35 quilted. There are also half blocks and a narrow border.

Here is a look at the back.

Here’s hoping I get another block or two done today!

Have a good one!

Scrap Management

A question that I am frequently asked, is how do I deal with scraps? I wrote the following post several years ago, but given the questions, I thought it might be fun to revisit. So this is my method of scrap management.

First, find a container for scraps you want to keep together. Add to this until it is ready to over flow. Really. I don’t want to get all this out to cut a handful of pieces. Most quilters are already at this point.

This pan is filled with mostly scraps from my collection of Denyse Schmidt fabrics. I love her designs and have found that all her lines work so well together. I have a lot more scraps than this, but these are scraps I know I want to use together. I have a large basket for Civil War Repro fabrics and another bin for solids.

After my pan, basket, or bin is sufficiently full, I  start sorting into like sizes and shapes. If you have a die cutter, you will likely have lots of similar shapes left over. This is very handy!

FullSizeRender

Toss bits that are tinier than you will actually use. Someone might uses bits this size, but I won’t. So out they go.

Next, decide what dies you have that you would like to use and will fit with the scraps that you have. For example, I had a pile of these hexies in this scrap bin. I could have cut them into something else, but I really want to make another hexie quilt at some point.

FullSizeRender (4)

So I got out my hexie die. I also decided that I would like to cut tumblers, 2 inch finished squares, and 2 inch finished HSTs.  So I pulled all of these out. I have an Accuquilt Studio Cutter and that makes this process much easier and faster, but you could use rulers and templates as well.

FullSizeRender (5)FullSizeRender (6)FullSizeRender (7)

I started with the biggest scraps cutting as many hexies as I could. Then I started in on the tumblers because that was the next largest shape I planned to use. I layered my fabric scraps cutting up to 10 tumblers at a time (check with your die cutter manufacturer to know how many layers you can safely cut with your machine). When I could cut no more, I moved onto to squares and then the HSTs. I ended up with scraps that were still too big for me to throw away so I cut  1 1/2 inch finished HSTs as well.

FullSizeRender (8)

When I was all done, these were the scraps that I ended up tossing out.

FullSizeRender (9)

And here are my neat little piles of scraps all ready to go. Isn’t that ever so much better?

FullSizeRender (10)

I also had some small strips leftover that didn’t fit any of the dies I had pulled out. I could have placed them on one of my strip dies to cut uniform strips. But  I had another idea in mind.

FullSizeRender (11)

I started randomly sewing these strips together like this.

Then I pulled out another die, 3 x 6 inch finished this time.  I cut my random bits into uniform rectangles like this.

These pieces have so many design possibilities.

As I create more scraps, I will add to these piles. Or I could make a mini or bag with what I have cut so far.

The big thing to keep in mind, is to to choose shapes and sizes that you know you will use. I can think of MANY patterns using these squares and HSTs that I would make.

Start with the biggest die you have chosen and work down to the smaller dies.

Don’t save something you won’t use anyway. There  is nothing virtuous about saving scraps that you won’t use!

I hope you all found this helpful. I know I have a few buckets of scraps I need to tackle again soon. By the way, if you are interested in the Accuquilt studio cutter, they are on sale from now until February 24th. Studio dies are also on sale, buy one get one free with the code STUDIOBOGO. This deal also ends the 24th. If you click on my links and then make a purchase, it won’t cost you any more, but I receive a small commission which helps cover the costs of the blog. I appreciate your support!

Have a great day!

Finish It Up Friday ~ Tree of Life

I love a quick project and since this one was inspired by a Pinterest pin, it ticked that box as well.

Here it is before washing.

I chose to quilt down the middle of each piece instead of in the ditch. It was all vanity, I was showing off how well my HSTs lined up!

Here is after washing.

And by the way, I did find an antique quilt with a trunk like mine!

Have a great day!

TBT ~ More Ancient Quilts

I’ve unearthed a few more old quilts. When I first started, I didn’t have a stash. My mom gave me this old green sheet that had belonged to her mother. I used it to make this small baby quilt. I hand quilted it. It was darn near impossible to get a needle through that sheet!

This next one was made from the first civil war type reproduction fabric I ever purchased. It is hand quilted with poly batting. Poor choice!

These last two were made by my two oldest children. They used fabric crayons. The first was by Daughter #1.

This one by Number 1 Son.

Who knows what will turn up next? Have a great day!
