Work in Progress Wednesday

I finished quilting the QOV with the feathers and will show my finish on Friday. As soon as I finished it, I loaded up another one.

This one was a breeze to quilt, so nicely pieced and pressed! I finished it to. And will add final pictures to the Friday post. Now I am back to this one:

IMG_1905
It is loaded and I am choosing threads.

IMG_1931
I have figured out how to quilt the printed flag strips but I am still undecided about the pieced strips. It is my goal to enhance the piecing of each top, not over power it. I considered using rulers to quilt a simple grid here but the grids/diamonds from strip to strip won’t line up. Perhaps the answer will come to me while at work this afternoon.

A bit of quilting…

I finally started quilting the QOV that I had in the frame. I am quilting a simple meander in the very busy border and some gigantic feathers in the large triangles surrounding the center block.

The white lines you see are chalk guidelines. They will come out in the wash.

All the schools were closed due to the snow. Here is a peak out my back door.

I enjoyed a cozy warm day inside with this cutie!

I hope you are cozy and warm where ever you are as well!

Design Wall Monday – QOV Edition

Last week, I met up with a member of the Stitching Sisters QOV group. I handed her a few quilts I had quilted for the group and she handed off this box of tops to quilt!

IMG_1912
There are 9 in there and I am hoping to get several done before I head out west later this month. The first is in the frame but I had no time to work on it yesterday.

IMG_1906
And here is the next one I will be quilting.

IMG_1891
Isn’t this stunning? This quilter did the loveliest job piecing this top. It lays nice and flat and she stay stitched the edges. This is a long armer’s dream!
Here I have it folded in half and pinned to my design wall so I can contemplate the quilting of it. I think this design and use of fabric is just brilliant. I want my quilting to do justice to this top.

IMG_1905

I’m not sure how much I will get done today with my little helper here.

IMG_1896
But really, how can you resist that face?

Good Riddance January! Hello February!

January was not a great month for me and I am quite happy to bid it adieu!

Here is a review of my goals for the month:

1. Continue with a Log Cabin block a day. – Well, that didn’t happen! Making an unexpected trip out of state followed by the flu means I haven’t made a single one since the middle of the month. Time to rethink this plan.

IMG_1822

2. Quilt 3 QOVs. ~ On New Year’s Day, I threw the timing out on my long arm. I finally got it fixed on January 12th. I got two QOVs quilted this month and got a third loaded last night. I hope to start it today.

IMG_3674IMG_1806IMG_3769

3. Make 24 sawtooth stars. – I got only 12 done and half of those I did last night!

IMG_3768

4. Finish my Metropolitan Fair Churn Dash quilt. Possibly the top only! – Done! I finished the top but it needs to be quilted. I don’t have a picture of it done but here is a partial pic to refresh my own memory!

IMG_1706

5. Get entries together for two local quilt shows. – Done! I have to drive up north to retrieve quilts from the first show after church today.

6. Make a list of UFOs and plans for the new year. I started working on this and it is a little bit scary! –Done! The list, I mean! I did actually complete a few items on it as well.

7. Finish my “Envelope” quilt top that I started on my trip to Wisconsin in November. This will probably be a small quilt but perfect in case I need a baby gift. –Done! Ready and waiting for a baby girl to present herself.

I also finished this UFO:

And started and finished my Graffiti Heart quilt.

I finally made a tag blankie for Baby E:

And I made the Small Quilt Talk challenge quilt for January:

IMG_1757

And we are on to February! It is a short month and I am heading west to visit my Arizona kids this month so I need to keep things reasonable here.

1. I would like to quilt 3 QOVs. I have 9 tops currently at my house to be quilted. Yikes!

2. I would like to finish the Metropolitan Fair Churn Dash quilt.

3. I want to get my Goose in the Pond swap blocks finished for my local guild.

4. I would like to make 12 more sawtooth star blocks.

5. I would like to complete the February SQT challenge quilt.

Since I leave in 2 and a half weeks, that it probably plenty! Linking up wth Lily’s Quilts for Fresh Sewing Day.

Finish It Up Friday

I am so pleased with my finish this week! It will be a gift for Daughter #2.

IMG_1884
I decided from the beginning that this was the perfect piece to try out some graffiti quilting on. So beware of picture overload. Here goes:

Block Swaps

Have you ever taken part in a block swap? I am involved with an ongoing swap in my local guild this year. Today I got the blocks back from our first exchange.

IMG_1873
Aren’t they fun? I haven’t decided yet what I will do with them. I may make 4 more and that would be enough for a Quilt of Valor.

I am also taking part in an exchange with the Small Quilt Talk group. We are exchanging 3″ finished 9 patches. We each make up to five sets of ten blocks. I finished mine and sent them off to our swap hostess today.

IMG_1844
I really love these little blocks. I may have to make some more because these would make a great bed quilt!

I have the pattern now for the next local swap so I need to get to work!

A Tag Blankie

You may remember that last year about this time, I made a tag blankie for Baby L. I finally finished another for Baby E! They are big Detroit Lions fans in their house so I used Lions fabric and came up with my own football pattern.

IMG_1863
Then it was time to scrounge up some bits of ribbon to make the tags and add a soft minkie type fabric for the backing.

IMG_1870
There are many tutorials online for making these, though you really don’t need one.

And here is my beautiful boy!

Another QOV

I recently finished another Quilt of Valor for a member of the Stitching Sisters QOV group. I wanted to do a custom job on this lovely top but feeling so very behind, I decided to do a panto and be done.

IMG_1866

IMG_1867
Here is shot of the back. It really is navy blue!

IMG_1868
I used Warm and White batting and Glide thread. The panto is called Loop the Loop and it is from Urban Elementz.

Design Wall Monday

I finally felt good enough to do a bit of stitching this weekend. I’ve had a stack of fat quarters set aside for a quilt for someone for quite some time. I finally decided what to do with them.

2015/01/img_1845.jpg
First I cut them up into 5 inch squares. Then I put them up on the design wall.

2015/01/img_1847.jpg
I used a free pattern from Robert Kauffman, found here ,for the heart. I wanted to make this bigger so I added white orders and 4 patches.

2015/01/img_1849.jpg
Then it was time to quilt.

2015/01/img_1856.jpg

2015/01/img_1857.jpg
I am quite taken with the current trend of graffiti quilting. All that is left this week is some hand stitching on the binding. I will share the complete finish on Friday.

Finish It Up Friday

I managed one small finish this week. I am happy to have found and finished this UFO. Here is what it looked like when I found it last week.

2015/01/img_18261.jpg
I took this with me on my trip when I realized with some rearranging that it could be a table runner. I worked on it in the car and made the top version you see below.

2015/01/img_1836.jpg
I think a table runner should look good from all sides and that version wasn’t symmetrical enough for me. So I took it apart again and came up with the bottom version. I’m still not crazy about it but it is what it is. I layered it with a backing and batting and turned the whole thing pillowcase style. I added minimal quilting with my walking foot and called it done.

2015/01/img_1842.jpg
That is not enough quilting for me normally but it was all I had energy for this week.

Thanks for all the well wishes. Be careful out there, this flu is a nasty one and you can pick it up pretty much anywhere!
