We had a great weekend and hated to see it end! Remember my leader/ender project? It became the main project over the weekend.

I may get to quilting it today but I have a lot of clean up from the weekend to do. I would like to quilt it on the long arm but this is loaded right now. So it may just sit waiting a while.

Happy Independence Day!

WHEN in the Course of human Events, it becomes necessary for one People to dissolve the Political Bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the Earth, the separate and equal Station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent Respect to the Opinions of Mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the Separation.

WE hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness—That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed, that whenever any form of Government becomes destructive of these Ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its Foundation on such Principles, and organizing its Powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient Causes; and accordingly all Experience hath shewn, that Mankind are more disposed to suffer, while Evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long Train of Abuses and Usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object, evinces a Design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their Right, it is their Duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future Security. Such has been the patient Sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the Necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The History of the present King of Great-Britain is a History of repeated Injuries and Usurpations, all having in direct Object the Establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid World.

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public Good.

He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing Importance, unless suspended in their Operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

He has refused to pass other Laws for the Accommodation of large Districts of People, unless those People would relinquish the Right of Representation in the Legislature, a Right inestimable to them, and formidable to Tyrants only.

He has called together Legislative Bodies at Places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the Depository of their public Records, for the sole Purpose of fatiguing them into Compliance with his Measures.

He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly Firmness his Invasions on the Rights of the People.

He has refused for a long Time, after such Dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative Powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the Dangers of Invasion from without, and Convulsions within.

He has endeavoured to prevent the Population of these States; for that Purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their Migrations hither, and raising the Conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.

He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary Powers.

He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the Tenure of their Offices, and the Amount and Payment of their Salaries.

He has erected a Multitude of new Offices, and sent hither Swarms of Officers to harrass our People, and eat out their Substance.

He has kept among us, in Times of Peace, Standing Armies, without the consent of our Legislatures.

He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil Power.

He has combined with others to subject us to a Jurisdiction foreign to our Constitution, and unacknowledged by our Laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:

For quartering large Bodies of Armed Troops among us:

For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from Punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:

For cutting off our Trade with all Parts of the World:

For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:

For depriving us, in many Cases, of the Benefits of Trial by Jury:

For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pre-tended Offences:

For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an arbitrary Government and enlarging its Boundaries, so as to render it at once an Example and fit Instrument for introducing the same absolute Rule into these Colonies:

For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the forms of our Governments:

For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with Power to legislate for us in all Cases whatsoever.

He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.

He has plundered our Seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our Towns, and destroyed the Lives of our People.

He is, at this Time, transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the Works of Death, Desolation, and Tyranny already begun with circumstances of Cruelty and Perfidy, scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous Ages, and totally unworthy of the Head of a civilized Nation.

He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the Executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.

He has excited domestic Insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the Inhabitants of our Frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known Rule of Warfare, is an undistinguished Destruction, of all Ages, Sexes and Conditions.

In every stage of these Oppressions we have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble Terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated Injury. A Prince, whose Character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the Ruler of a free People.

Nor have we been wanting in Attentions to our British Brethren. We have warned them from Time to Time of Attempts by their Legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the Circumstances of our Emigration and Settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and Magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the Ties of our common Kindred to disavow these Usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our Connections and Correspondence. They too have been deaf to the Voice of Justice and of Consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the Necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of Mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace, Friends.

We, therefore, the Representatives of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the World for the Rectitude of our Intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly Publish and Declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be, FREE AND INDEPENDENT STATES, that they are absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political Connection between them and the State of Great-Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as FREE AND INDEPENDENT STATES, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which INDEPENDENT STATES may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm Reliance on the Protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our fortunes, and our sacred Honor.

Finish It Up Friday and How long does it take to make a quilt?

Thank you to everyone for your wonderful comments this week! I apologize for being woefully behind in responding. Looks like it will be a bit hit or miss this summer.

I finished my hour glass quilt June 23. Hour glasses were once used to measure time. It made me think about the question everyone seems to ask, how long does it take to make a quilt? I am sure you have been asked this as well. I never know how to answer. Mr. Wonderful bought these fabrics for me on a trip three years ago. So did this quilt take three years?

  I cut the pieces out for this quilt in April. So did it take three months?

 I started playing with layouts  the end of May. So did it take three weeks?

I initially wanted it to be reminiscent of a flag and planned to display it for the 4th. This plan only worked if I pieced it like the second picture below. But I would have had to find more blues and leave some reds out. This goes against my sense of thrift.
  

So this is the layout I chose. It used every last piece with nothing left over other than the small triangles I cut for a leader/ender project.

 I started piecing this June 16, so did this take a week?

I started quilting it on Sunday, June 21.

I finished on Monday, June 22,  and then auditioned binding.
  I ended up with this  which I am quite happy with. I finished the hand sewing Monday night.

 And this is how it looks after I washed and dried it on Tuesday, June 23.
  I used a pantograph called Random Clams from Urban Elementz. It is not the easiest pattern to follow. My work is all hand guided, no computers. I was not happy with my quilting but it looks better after washing and a bit of crinkly shrinking.

I wanted the impression of random Baptist fans without the stiff regularity of the Baptist Fan panto that I have.

 So not at all the flag I was going for, but it still has a patriotic feel. It finished at about “46 x 58” after washing.

June Wrap Up and July Goals

The summer is passing too quickly by! Here is a look at my goals for June:

1. I have one more QOV top that needs to be quilted. Done!

2. I want to finish my 16 patch top. The biggest hindrance here is deciding how big I want this to be and what to do about borders. Not done! However, I did decide on size and have purchased the border fabric so that is a win in my mind!

3. I have an idea for a flag quilt made from hourglass blocks that I want to make for my entry way. I have the pieces all cut. I would love to have this complete so I can hang it for the Fourth. Done! Well, sort of. It didn’t turn out to be  flag quilt but it is done nonetheless. I will show this finish on Friday as it seemed appropriate for Independence Day weekend.

 

4. I am going to make a quilt for each of my sisters this summer. I have fabric for both but need to make some decisions on designs. I want to have at least one of them to the piecing stage this month. The top for the first one is now done! Here is a picture taken before the borders were added.

5. I want that darn log cabin done this month! DONE! DONE! DONE!

Now how about some goals for July?

1. Top of the list is to quilt and bind the first sister quilt. The backing is already in the frame so it will definitely be the first thing quilted.

2. Since little Lincoln is here, I am going to make a label for his baby quilt. I made this last fall out of shirts worn by my son, my hubby, and my dad.

3. I would also like to get the 16 patch quilt finished for the guest room.

4. I would like to decide on a pattern for the second sister quilt.

5. I would like to make a small quilt out of my leader ender HSTs.

6. I want to decide on my next leader/ender project.

I’m not going to add any more than this since I will be traveling to Arizona to see my newest little guy for 9 days.

And this is my timesaving tip for this week! Setting goals, making lists, and reviewing them is one of my greatest time saving tools. I don’t waste a lot of time wondering what to do next because I always have a list of projects that I want to focus on handy.

WIP Wednesday

Ugh! Trying to decide if I want to rip out an 80 inch seam to fix this. Then I need to cut and add some narrow borders. This is for a twin bed. I have enough blocks to make it bigger and I really want to. But it is for a twin bed so that’s silly. I can use the leftovers for a nice baby quilt.

I would love to get this top done and in the frame by the weekend.

He’s here!

Please meet my newest grandson, Lincoln.

Lincoln arrived at 7:22 AM on June 29th, weighing 8 pounds and 3 ounces. He is 20 inches tall. Here he is meeting big brother, Liam, for the first time.

Design Wall Monday

Good Morning! I hope you all had a lovely weekend. I am making progress on the sister quilt. It still isn’t a quilt in a day but it is coming along.  

The picture above shows the colors  pretty well but I actually have more blocks done.  

 Remember these HSTs I was using for leaders/enders? 

 They are all done so now I need to decide what to do with them. 

 I have ten of each.   So I have some design decisions to make there as well. And I need to come up with a new leader/ender project real soon.

Slow Stitching Sunday

I got a few pieces added to my scrappy hexie quilt yesterday and hope to complete another row today. 

This is where it is at right now. 
 At this point, it measures approximately 46 x 53 inches. I should decide how much bigger I want it to be! 

I’ve also been working on blocks for the first sister quilt. 

 

I have enough parts cut for 64 blocks even though I only need 48. I will use the extra 16 for a baby quilt. It would be tempting to stop after 48 and just put this top together. However, making all the blocks first insures the best distribution of the prints.

Single Irish Chain

My friend, Donna, recently finished piecing her first quilt. I am the lucky one that got to quilt this beautiful Single Irish Chain!  

 Can you believe this is her first? It is so beautifully done! She chose this panto from Urban Elementz. 

I used Glide thread in Celery for the top and Cream Magna Glide Classic in the bobbin. I turned off the lights to take this next picture so the quilting would really show. 

And this is the lovely label on the back. The little white bits are stabilizer that will wash away.

I thought it might be fun to try taking a video of the quilting process. The quality admittedly isn’t great. I taped my phone to the long arm machine to do this. I hope it isn’t too loud!

Finish It Up Friday

A few weeks ago I mentioned a super secret project that I was working on. It has  now been gifted so I can share it here. 

 

Daughter #1 made these blocks before her wedding. The guests signed the blocks instead of a guest book. She hasn’t had time to put them together and with Baby #2 coming along in December, I knew it wasn’t going to happen any time soon. So I decided to finish the quilt for her birthday.  

  

 

She was so pleased! Here is a look at the back: 

I used a vintage sheet that my sister found in the wedding colors.


I used Glide  thread, Hobbs 80/29 batting, and a panto called Featherize from Urban Elementz.
