FAL 2014 and March/April Goals

Today the link ups are starting for the Finish A Long 2014 over at The Littlest Thistle. So if you signed up, don’t forget to add your links! There are some great prizes out there for finishes. I originally had 5 things on my list to finish this quarter. I finished a lot more than that but for me this was about finishing some long standing UFOs.  Here is my original post.

I made my March list fairly short, knowing I would spend half the month in Arizona. Here is the list:

1. Compete the March challenge quilt for the SQT group. Done! Finished the binding on the way to Arizona!

2. Complete a QOV for the HMQS Quilting Treasures challenge. Done and mailed out last Friday.

3. Make crib skirt, bumper pads, crib sheets, and quilt for baby Q’s baby shower. The crib skirt, bumper pads, and sheet are done. Now to make a quilt to match.

4. Finish the last 20 Album blocks. I think I made 5 this month and am plenty bored with them!

April goals:

1. Baby quilt to match the rest of the bedding.

2. Finish shirting quilt.

3. SQT Challenge quilt.

4. Make 3 presentation cases for QOVs and label all three.

5. Finish the album blocks.

6. Remake the March SQT challenge quilt in vintage fabrics.

I also need to set my Quarter 2 FAL Goals. These will again be long standing UFOs that need to get done. Hmmmm….the album quilt might find a spot here!

Shirting quilt and Sewing for Baby Q

I got the top of my shirting quilt done last night.

20140331-214153.jpg

It didn’t change too much from the layout I was working with over the weekend.

20140331-214337.jpg

I even got it loaded into the frame and hope to start quilting before work today.

20140331-214636.jpg

I finished the bumper pads and also made a sheet for Baby Q. Now I can start the fun part, making a quilt to match the rest of the bedding! I will post a picture when it is all on the crib.

It was a beautiful day out and I was able to hang my sheets and towels out on the clothesline. I love that!

Design Wall Monday

I am happy to say I got some sewing time in this weekend! I have been playing a bit with my shirting pieces and they are on the design wall today.

20140330-213416.jpg
Still not sure yet about this arrangement.

I also made some baby bibs for Baby L. Here is one:

20140330-213643.jpg
I actually turned a few of the burp cloths I made into bibs using a knit ribbing for the neckline.

I got the crib skirt made for Baby Q and started the rest of the bedding.

20140330-213907.jpg
This will be bumper pads. I forgot to take pics of the crib skirt before I took it over to my daughters house. I will also make sheets and another quilt.

I pulled this vintage top out yesterday. I am trying to decide how I will quilt it.

So much to do, so little time!

Sunday

Remember these?

20140329-232904.jpg
They turned into this:

Which turned into this:

I took some pictures at an angle so hopefully the quilting will show. Even though this only measures 22″ square, I still quilted it with the long arm. Sometimes it is nice to sneak in a quick little project that can be finished quickly.

I also got a few more album blocks done.

20140329-233243.jpg
I have 19 more to go.

Today I will do a lite slow stitching on this:

I hope you get some stitching time in as well.

This and That

I worked on several different projects yesterday. First my friend Sarah came to work on her quilt.,it is looking fabulous! I will take a picture next time. While she worked on her quilt, I sewed shirting scraps together.

20140329-011715.jpg
I am not sure yet what this will become but it is fun to play with the scraps.

I also made some burp cloths for my two grandsons.

20140329-011840.jpg

I found a pattern online for these and modified the shape to my liking. I cut the pattern out of freezer paper and ironed it onto the flannel. Then I stitched around just beyond the edge of the pattern.

20140329-012352.jpgyou can see the stitching line after I removed the patter on this one:

20140329-012438.jpg
Next I cut the burp cloth out with pinking shears about a quarter inch beyond the seam and turned it right side out. I finished them off by topstitiching close to the edge.

Hubby worked late so I pulled out some HST scraps and played with those a bit.

20140329-012731.jpg

More on that project tomorrow.

And here is a little reminder for you (if you are squeamish, look away now!). Every now and again, clean and oil your machine.

It will thank you!

Have a great day!

Finish it up Friday!

For the first time in a long time, I have a finish to share! Yes, I finally got that QOV for the HMQS Quilting Treasures challenge finished! Here it is:

20140328-064828.jpg
I added the sleeve and labels and sent it off yesterday. I am glad it is gone!

I loved reading all the comments yesterday regarding the antique quilt. I have rescued a couple in bad shape in the last year. They live folded at the end of the bed on the guest room. I do not need this quilt and don’t really have a lot of extra storage space. So for now at least, it will stay where it is.

Would you rescue this quilt?

Monday I went to a fun antique shop with Daughter #1. We spot toed this lovely old quilt.

20140327-065014.jpg

20140327-065031.jpg
I think the pattern is called Chips and Whetstones. It was simply hand quilted in a double diagonal pattern. The condition was rough! There were holes all the way through in places. At $25, it was ver tempting to bring it home.

Would you have?

Slogging along…

Finally got the challenge quilt started. Not finished, just started.

20140325-065706.jpg

20140325-065718.jpg
See that pink, I mean red, border? It takes 10 minutes to mark, 10 minutes to quilt, and a couple hours to unquilt.

Grrrr……

This has truly been a challenging quilt. I could not decide how to quilt this thing. Finally decided on an easy swirl and feather free hand treatment for the border.

20140325-065945.jpg

Not in love with it. Now I need to decide what to do on the diamonds. Thinking about a quick free hand loopy fill. I just want it done.

I think I started thinking about this hanging amongst masterpieces at a show and got all intimidated.

Yeah, after I said just yesterday that I wasn’t in it for the competition. I’m still not but neither do I want this one to look like the sad little orphan quilt because of the quilting. And I wanted to come up with something clever.

It isn’t happening.

I have to remember, it isn’t about the show, it is about the combat veteran that will receive it.

Back to work. Linking up with Connie at Free Motion by the River.

Have a great day!

Design Wall Monday

Seems like forever since I have had a DWM post! This is what I am “designing” today. First, a backing for the challenge quilt.

20140324-071450.jpg
And then the quilting that I will go on the quilt itself.

20140324-071529.jpg

20140324-071536.jpg
I am not feeling particularly creative today 😕. I am hoping by the time I get back from taking the dog to the vet, that inspiration will strike as I really need to get this thing quilted today.

While it is a challenge quilt, I am not going for an award winner here. I just see this challenge as another opportunity to create a Quilt of Valor for a deserving vet. I am going for well done rather than a ribbon. The reward for me is knowing that it will bring comfort to someone who has given of their life for us.

Challenge Quilt Update

Lyndon asked what die I used for the challenge quilt.

20140323-155648.jpg

20140323-155708.jpg
It is a 60 degree diamond. Here are pics with the numbers.

20140323-155831.jpg

20140323-155838.jpg
It is a pretty big die so the piecing goes fast.

Hope this helps!
