Finish it up Friday!

I have another finish to share with you today. I finally had some sunny days to take pictures of my shirting quilt. I’ll let the pictures do the talking.

A Finish!

Here are the finished pics of the Noteworthy quilt.

I used a panto called Square Folded Diagonal from Urban Elementz. It is not easy to follow these lines and I thought I would hate it but the texture, especially after washing, is amazing!

After I was nearly done with this, I remembered these “Bookish” fabrics I had gotten from Connecting Threads a while back.

Since my cousin just graduated from school with a degree in library science, I think I should have used these fabrics for her quilt instead.

Hmmmm….

Starting to think about starting over!

2nd Quarter Finish Along 2014 Goals

I spent some time pulling out some older UFOs for the 2nd quarter of the FAL. In no particular order, here are the things I want to finish this quarter.

1. I love this DS hexie top. I want to add some borders and get it quilted.

20140407-222817.jpg

2. The calendar quilt….holdover from last quarter. Sigh….

20140407-223551.jpg

3. I need to make presentation cases and labels for these three QOVs so I can ship them off.

20140407-223602.jpg

4. This labyrinth has some issues. It has been languishing in a drawer for several years. I need to either fix and finish to pitch it.

20140407-223609.jpg

5. This one just needs a facing and hanging sleeve. I need to finish it for a small show next month for my art quilt group.

20140407-223617.jpg

6. This one needs the same finishing treatment.

20140407-223625.jpg

7. This unfinished baby quilt has been around too long as well. It will be a good practice piece to quilt.

20140407-223631.jpg

8. I made 5 of these blocks about 15 years ago. I still like them. I really need to make 4 more though. I bought this border fabric in England though I think it is Marcus Brothers.

20140407-223639.jpg

9. Album Quilt. I got so bored making these blocks but I would like to get this finished and on my bed by fall.

20140407-223543.jpg

10. I can’t show a picture of this one, but I also need to finish the baby quilt for Baby Q. Yes, I already made two but this one will match the crib bedding that I made.

So that is my list for the FAL 2014 hosted by Katy at the Littlest Thistle. The linkup is here for Quarter 2 Goals. I am also linking up with Lee at Freshly Squeezed for WIP Wednesday. I sure have enough Works in Progress!

Have a great day!

You were right!

The majority of my commenters said the white background of the cross blocks was too stark. I agreed. So I made a few friendship star blocks to throw in instead.

20140407-220131.jpg
I got it quilted and if the weather is nice enough today, I will have finished pictures to show tomorrow.

20140407-220256.jpg
I had some extra batting and backing at the end so I did a bit of free motion practice too.

Design Wall Monday

This is what is on my design wall today:

20140406-230416.jpg
Not a finished product by any means. I had the cross blocks left over from the cross quilt and I am toying with the idea of adding a either these or some other blocks to break up the design a bit. What do you think?

I didn’t sew much on Sunday, spent it with the family instead. I did make some hexie progress.

Daughter #1 loved the crib sheet and bumper pads I made for Baby Q.>

20140406-230815.jpg
Because of the way the crib is made, I couldn’t use traditional ties to attach the bumper pads. I like this look better anyway and she does too! I know what I want to do for the crib quilt also, just need to get to work!

Sunday Stitches

I hope you all had a great day yesterday. I sure did! I did a bit of sewing and a little shopping with Mr. Wonderful and Daughter #3. It was so nice just to be together.

This is what I hope to work on today, a little fast stitching and a little slow stitching.

20140405-234936.jpg
I got all the  blocks made for the Noteworthy quilt yesterday.

20140405-235022.jpg
I would really love to get that top together and in the frame by Monday but church and family are my priorities on Sundays. I also hope to spend a little time reading this new book that just came in the mail:

I hope you all have a wonderful Sunday!

A New Project

I have a cousin getting married at the end of May and I decided to make a nap quilt for a wedding gift. I had plenty of Noteworthy by Sweetwater left over from the cross quilt I made for my friend in January and some of the leftover cut pieces would be perfect.

20140405-070815.jpg

20140405-070826.jpg
The piecing is going pretty quickly.

I also washed the little triangle quilt I made from vintage fabrics. This time I used a couple drops of Dawn dish detergent. The first picture below is the “Before” and the second one is “After.”

20140405-071044.jpg

20140405-071308.jpg
Not much difference here. I may do another quick wash with the Restoration product  just to see what will happen. I love experiments!

And lastly, while working in the sewing room this week, I watched this series that I think first came out on PBS:

20140405-071217.jpg

I have been enjoying it. I was able to get a copy to watch from the library. They have an interesting discussion regarding the Gee’s Bend quilts.

It is supposed to be a lovely day here today so hopefully I can get some good pictures of my finished shirtings quilt to share.

Finish it up Friday

I had three small finishes and one big one this week. My bigger finish is the shirting quilt I was working on but since the weather is so nasty, I don’t have pictures yet. I finished two more small quilts with my vintage scraps in addition to the April SQT challenge quilt I showed yesterday.

Remember the tiny triangles I showed you?

20140403-191347.jpg
I used them!

20140403-191423.jpg

20140403-191433.jpg

20140403-191441.jpg
I even hand quilted it! It finished up at 6″ by 7″. I turned the backing to the front and stitched it down for a self binding.
I had planned to make all my SQT challenge quilts this year from vintage fabrics but when March came along, I forgot! So I made another one this week.

20140403-191719.jpg

20140403-191727.jpg

20140403-191735.jpg
This one measures about 9″ square. I am going to just rinse this one in cool water and see what happens.

Thanks for all the comments on the little quilt I showed yesterday! Someone asked where I get vintage scraps. I have purchased some on eBay, some at antique shops and garage sales. Some bits came from very damaged quilt blocks or tops. Most of the really old stuff I would not use in anything bigger than a wall or doll quilt. They are just too fragile. The early dyes often caused deterioration in the fabrics themselves. By the turn of the last century, they had made many improvements. 1930s fabrics are generally sturdy enough to use in a quilt that will be used and washed.

Working with Vintage Fabrics

I love vintage fabrics and have collected bits and pieces for years. I enjoy making small quilts out of treasured bits. But they can be a challenge to use and you just never know how things will turn out. I just finished this little quilt for the SQT challenge.

20140402-175831.jpg
I used all vintage fabrics even though some had discolorations. I decided when I finished, I would give it a quick, gentle wash in this:

20140402-180002.jpg

20140402-180010.jpg I have used this product many times to remove age related stains from vintage textiles and am very satisfied with it. However, old fabrics can misbehave like a toddler. Here is the same little quilt after a quick hand wash.

20140402-180201.jpg
Pretty amazing, huh? Here is a close up of the change in the border fabric.

20140402-180258.jpg
I knew there were risks when I made and washed this. And I am not at all unhappy with how it turned out. In fact, it looks even more like an antique now! Please understand, I am not at all unhappy with the product, this is just the nature of the beast when working with vintage textiles. These fabrics are probably late 1800s so they are truly old!

I am glad I took before and after pics just so you could see what can happen.

Work in progress Wednesday

I have a couple works in progress right now. First, the quilting on my shirtings quilt.

20140401-213616.jpg

20140401-213632.jpg

I also started working on this months SQT challenge. By the way, SQT stands for the Small Quilt Talk group on Yahoo. I amusing vintage fabrics. The blocks will finish at 4 inches.

20140401-213832.jpg

20140401-213843.jpg
While pulling fabric for this, I found some tiny half square triangles I had saved. How small is too small?

20140401-214005.jpg

20140401-214013.jpg
These measure about 3/4 of an inch unfinished!
