A Small Finish

As you know, I’ve been practicing feathers this week. The other day, I mentioned trying to figure out how to quilt my little posy quilt and Sue, from Sue Daurio’s Quilting Adventures, commented that I should use feathers.

After I stopped laughing, and thinking that was easy for her to say (go look at her work!), I thought, what the heck? This quilt is only about 9″ x 12″ so these are pretty small feathers.

I quilted a tiny loopy pattern in the background. It is far from perfect but I like it! Pictorial stuff is outside my normal box and clearly, the quilting was too and that stretch is always good.

Finish it up Friday

Here are pictures of the MissKate shelter quilt I finished this week. It is dark and dreary out so the pictures are not the best but I was busy every day this week that the sun was out!

I had to hang it sideways on the fence to keep it off the ground.

I quilted this using white Glide thread from Fil-Tec. I used a high loft Hobbs polydown batt and a panto from Urban Elementz called Loop the Loop. And just in case you are interested, there are 111,938 quilting stitches in this!

Feather Practice

I mentioned the other day that I am taking part in the Feather QAL hosted by Amy over at 13 Spools. I am reviewing the lessons from Angela Walters’ Craftsy class Free Motion Quilting Feathers. Here are some of my practice bits.

You can see that I am using up a lot of scraps of fabric and batting, just stitching the pieces down as I go.

I am always in such a hurry to get things done. I need to spend more time playing. It is fun!

Also, I had a question asking if I use Red Snappers. No, but I have created a similar loading system for my long arm using some inexpensive tubing and rope light tracks from Home Depot. You can go to this post to see the details.

WIP Wednesday

I have another little work in progress this week.

I was influenced by all the wonderful little windmill quilts made by Kathie at Inspired by Antique Quilts. These blocks will finish at 4 inches square.

I am really loving the vintage aqua and red look lately. I like the vintage colors much better than the newer versions in such lines as Miss Kate by Bonnie and Camille.

I have been practicing my free motion feathers with scraps of batting and bits of pieces of leftovers fabrics on the long arm. I didn’t want to take my practice stuff off to quilt my tiny posy quilt so I loaded it like this:

I used magnets to attach the backing to the idle bar and the belly bar. Now I need to figure out how to quilt it.

Playing Catch Up

I think I will just quilt and bind this. The flower part was the pattern for a Small Quilt Challenge back in May so I am going to call this my May challenge quilt.

Amy at 13 Spools blog is hosting a Feather QAL. The idea is to take what you have read/learned about free motion quilting feathers and actually put it into practice. This is definitely something I need to do. I love feathers! But I need practice and this might be the kick in the pants I need. I loaded some junk fabric on the frame and I intend to use up bits of batting scraps.

I took an Angela Walters Craftsy class on Free Motion Quilting on Feathers a while back. I hope to review the lessons and start using them.

Design Wall Monday

I had another great weekend. Hope you all did as well. Yesterday, for some slow stitching, I played a bit with this:

The square in the center finishes at 3/4 of an inch. This morning I pulled out a few other vintage bits.

Aqua and red is all the rage but it is truly not a new fad! I hope to have a play with these today.

I finished quilting the Miss Kate quilt for the shelter and will bind it today. Here is a sneak peek.

Slow Stitching Sunday

I have been doing plenty of fast stitching this weekend. I got this shelter quilt quilted.

I think some little boy will love this. Hopefully, it will make him feel a little less scared and a little more loved. I couldn’t help but think of my own two little grandsons as I worked on this. Quilting a pantograph is great praying time!
I also got this one started.

Hubby and I got hooked on the show Lost last spring. Then came the flood and summer and we took a long break from it. Recently we started watching again. I am sure we will watch a couple episodes today and I am ready with some hand stitching. First, my hexies.

On and Off the Frame

Finish it up Friday

My finish for this week was my Bargello quilt. It is made from my hand dyed fabrics. The top was made ages ago and it was time to get this off the UFO pile.

It was a really tough quilt to photograph. The colors are intense though not quite as intense as it appears in the above picture. Here is the back.

I am glad it is done even if I am not in love with it. The quilting is not my best but I didn’t love the top enough to pick stitches.

Several of you asked about the Sharon Schamber binding method. Here is a link to a video explaining her method.

I also started quilting the top for the women’s shelter. I hope to finish that this morning and get it dropped off.

I used a panto from Urban Elementz called Airborne. I ended up loading it sideways because there was a seam running top to bottom down the back. I also hope to figure out a backing for the red/Aqua top I just finished so I can get that on the frame this weekend.

This and That

I finished the binding on my Bargello quilt and will share the whole thing tomorrow. I tried the Sharon Schamber binding method again and was quite pleased with how it turned out.

I also finished my curtain project for church.

Not much to look at, is it? LOL

And last night I went to the local guild meeting. I turned in my swap blocks and got the pattern for the next round due in January. I also picked up a twin sized quilt top, batting, and backing to quilt for the local shelter.

Isn’t it lovely? I hope to get this loaded and start quilting after work today.
