Finish it up Friday

Having gone a whole week without stitching anything, I was eager to make something yesterday. And I did! My first mug rug:

Ignore the sorry binding job, I couldn’t find a walking foot. My choice of what to make was limited by what I could find in this mess! I found a bin with these bright scraps so that is what I worked with. I realize this is not a huge finish but given the flood, it feels like an accomplishment nonetheless.

Here is my current sewing set up:

My Featherweight in its card table:

And I just need to swivel around in my chair to reach my ironing set up with my vintage Singer travel iron.

It works! I also got some more churn dash blocks made.

Just goes to show, you don’t need a fancy room to quilt in!

Thoughtful Thursday

They waited for me as people wait for the rain, and they opened their mouths as for the spring rains. (Job 29:23 NET)

Work in Progress Wednesday

Not much (any?) sewing so far this week. This is my big WIP:

20140520-220344.jpg
That is my frame under sheets sitting in what will be my new sewing room. Here is my temporary sewing space:

This is a corner of Daughter #2’s bedroom. What you don’t see are the piles of stuff on the other side of the room. My goal for tomorrow is to make one block. Just one. To add to these:

Think I can do it? Hope so!

Vintage Quilt Top

Thank you all for the well wishes regarding our flood mess. We are making progress, slowly but surely. I thought I would share with you today another find from the estate sale that Daughter #1 and I attended a couple weeks ago. I think this vintage top is very unique!

The same shirting fabric is used throughout.

Two different claret reds are used.

Don’t you just love those 6 pointed stars?

When I purchased this top, it had been basted for hand quilting with a burgundy solid fabric for the back and a thick POLYESTER batting! Yikes! I had to rescue this top before someone tried to quilt it with that awful stuff! It deserves to be hand quilted and that won’t happen by my hand. But it should never be stuck with poly, that’s just wrong.

Hope you enjoyed my vintage treasure. Linking up with Connie at Free Motion by the River for Linky Tuesday.

Design Wall Monday

This is not what I hoped my design wall would look like today but, well, there it is.

See the fan? And the missing carpet? Thursday afternoon, Daughter #3 and I were to leave to visit my family and deliver the album quilt. But when she went to the basement for the cooler, this is what she found:

20140518-214831.jpg
Not. Good.

We had to cancel the trip to deal with the flood. It was just too much to leave for Mr. Wonderful to deal with. BTW, the cause of the flood was a sump pump failure and a simultaneous failure of the backup pump.

My posts this weekend were written and posted in advance of the trip we did not take. Convenient, since I was busy all weekend!

Here is another view of my sewing room that was:

20140518-215113.jpg
We sucked out all the water we could but in the end, we had to rip out all of the carpet, pad, and tack strips after moving everything upstairs. The industrial fans have been running 24/7 since.

Harry is enjoying a rest in the guest room.

20140518-215254.jpg
Sigh….not sure when we will get to play together again.
My sewing room and the contents of the office area are filling the music room and dining room.

My house looks like an episode of Hoarders! Yikes!

We have gotten a lot done this weekend but we have a long road ahead to get the basement usable again.

But God is faithful, it could have been so much worse. We could have left town without noticing and had an even worse mess to deal with. We had some furniture damage and a lot of mess but my long arm is fine. I had some wet fabric that I had to wash but the vast majority was dry. All my batting is dry. My thread is fine. Hubby’s computers are fine. I have a couple sewing machines that had damp cases but the machines are okay. No one was hurt, things can be replaced. Our wonderful son in law and his buddy helped us move all the furniture. Daughter #3 worked right along side of us all weekend. We will get through this.

And every cloud has a silver lining. Mr. Wonderful asked if I would like to trade rooms. My sewing room was 13′ x 13′ and his room is 21′ x 25′. It had his office/computer stuff and my long arm. He will have a room that he doesn’t have to share and I get a big new sewing studio! We are both happy.

I will love having my long arm in the sewing room! I will also make one corner of my room into a play area for my grandsons. In my head, I have been rearranging furniture :).

It will be a while before I can arrange furniture for real. Today, I will be removing trim, filling holes, dealing with people inspecting our drain tile, and hopefully, painting hubby’s new office. Next weekend, we hope to put down new flooring in his room.

So in the short term, I will be blogging more about creating a new studio than quilting itself. I hope you all will hang with me.

I apologize for not responding to comments over the last several days. I’ve simply been too overwhelmed. I do appreciate each one of you that takes time to stop in and leave notes for me!

Have a great day!

My Antique Quilt!

Last week, I told you about an estate sale that my daughter and I went to. Here are pictures of a quilt that followed me home.IMG_7956 IMG_7961 IMG_7962 IMG_7963 IMG_7966 IMG_7969 IMG_7972

As you can see, it is quite worn and there are some stains. The binding has been replace with a rather garish red. The tag reads: “Tammy Sarle born in early 1800 years.” The reverse side reads: “This quilt made my Tammy or Tamia Vosberg Sarles, 100 years old.” the tag is dated 1936. Images courtesy of Daughter #3, an amazing photographer!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Finish it up Friday, Q2 FAL 2014 and Blogger’s Quilt Festival!

This post has been a long time coming! I actually finished this a week ago but waited to  post until now as I will be gifting it this weekend. I am so happy to say that the Album quilt is done! IMG_7917 IMG_7927 IMG_7933 IMG_7938 IMG_7945 Daughter #3 took the pictures above for me. This quilt measures 96″ x 106″. I started it in February of this year.   20140514-213328.jpg 20140514-213342.jpg 20140514-213405.jpg I started this quilt in February and finished it in May of 2014. The Album block is a traditional block that I redrafted to that I could use my die cutter to cut the shapes for the 56 blocks. I quilted it using a pantograph by Patricia Ritter called Chaparral. There are over 202,000 stitches in the quilting. It measures 96″ by 106.” It was made for my parents. Shhh!!! They haven’t gotten it yet!

This project was on my list for the 2nd Quarter of the Finish Along 2014 hosted by Katy at The Littlest Thistle. My original list of goals can be found here.

This is my entry in the Large Quilts category for the Blogger’s Quilt Festival hosted by Amy at Amy’s Creative Side. Go see all the other quilts and win prizes from all her great sponsors!
