DWMonday

I have had a great time sewing this past weekend. The weather was rainy and it was a perfect time to stay inside and sew. I’ve been trying to come up with a design for a wall quilt using these hand dyed fabrics.

IMG_0775.JPG
I spent some time just playing at the design wall.

IMG_0777.JPG
When I thought it was done, I snapped a picture with my iPad.

IMG_0796.JPG
Then removed the color using a filter.

IMG_0797.JPG
I actually went through this process several times.

When I was satisfied, I picked up each piece in a row starting with the piece on the left and putting the next piece underneath. I clipped my stacks together with these little clips, always placing the clip at the top.

It can be tricky to keep things in order and this really helped!
This is the finished top.

Time to figure out how to quilt it!

Slow Stitching Sunday

Hubby is out if town on business this weekend and I have been getting as much sewing time in as possible! I have also done other things but I guess I am making up for time away from the sewing room earlier in the month.

I have been on a bit of a mini kick lately as there has been lots of inspiration coming from Kathie’s blog, Inspired by Antique Quilts. Recently she showed small vintage doll quilt top made of HSTs. It used double pinks and chrome yellow. I remembered that I had a bit of vintage chrome yellow fabric and as a reward for finishing the QOV, I started cutting triangles.

IMG_0782.JPG
I finished piecing my little top late Friday night and quilted it early Saturday. I watched a Sharon Schamber video showing how she does binding and thought I would try bits of her method on this quilt. It requires the use of Elmer’s School Glue. She fashioned a new tip for the bottle but I found this bottle (purchased at a beauty supply store for under a dollar) in my cupboards:

IMG_0756.JPG
I bought this bottle with a hand fabric dyeing technique in mind and then never used it. It worked perfectly and was much less expensive than the fancy bottle of Roxanne’s basting glue!

And yes, I realize there are those horrified by the use of glue and those who love it. School glue washes out completely. I have rarely used this method but it comes in handy at times.

The portion of Sharon’s technique I used was how she sews the ends of the binding together. She sews her ends together on the bias but the idea is the same. I would have had to cut another binding strip if I did that on this little quilt and you know that wasn’t going to happen! Ha!

Anyway, I hope I can explain this because it worked really well.

IMG_0757.JPG
First, when I got close to the end, I folded one end back and pressed as in the photo above. I placed a tiny bit of glue along this fold and then placed the other end of the strip down over top and set the glue by pressing with the iron.

IMG_0758.JPG
Next I stitched the ends together on the crease formed when I folded the first piece back.

IMG_0759.JPG
I gently pulled these two ends apart to release the glue and pressed the seam open. I finished sewing the binding to the quilt at the machine.

IMG_0760.JPG

Because this is a small quilt, I decided to use a single fold binding. So the next thing I did was press the edges of the binding under on the back side to prepare for hand stitching.

And this is what I am doing this morning!

Does anyone have any of this?

I have one small scrap left of a very old fabric. No clue who made or designed it. I have used this in so many things. It is one of those odd fabrics that works everywhere. I would love to have more of it.

IMG_0762.JPG
So if you have any you would like to part with, I would be happy to buy it from you or trade for something else.

Thanks!

It worked!

The other day, I shared my dilemma with my little shoo fly quilt. It was an early long arming victim of mine and I wanted to save it. I am quite happy to say that I was able to add quilting on my domestic machine and the bagginess in the border that bothered me so is gone!

IMG_0749.JPG
Here is a reminder of what it looked like before.

IMG_0741.JPG
I used a slightly darker thread than I had used on the feathers and I did a small stipple around it. I loved the echo and beadboard quilting ideas but my free motion skill on the domestic machine has greatly deteriorated since getting the long arm! Here are close ups.

IMG_0750.JPG
I was sure I would need to redo the binding at least but that turned out just fine as well.

Thanks for all of your suggestions and ideas. I procrastinated on doing this forever because I wasn’t sure how to tackle it. Now, a year and a half later, it finally feels finished!

Finish it up Friday

I finished my little 4 patch quilt the other day. As you know, I had a terrible time deciding on a border fabric. As I was putting some fabrics away, I spied another choice altogether. This I could be happy with, not too light and not too dark.

IMG_8477.JPG
The backing fabric came from a FQ that my hubby surprised me with on one of his shopping trips.

IMG_8479.JPG
I am pleased with this quilting choice also. I actually used a rather bright green thread but it blended well with all the scraps. It gives texture without competing with the piecing.

IMG_8480.JPG
All in all, a happy little quilt!

I think I should call it, Inspired by Inspired By Antique Quilts! Thanks, Kathie! Click here to get a little inspiration for yourself!

Requilting a quilt?

I made this quilt about a year and a half ago. It was one of my first times using rulers and quilting feathers on my previous long arm.

IMG_0741.JPG

IMG_0742.JPG

Yeah, not so thrilled with the border. The feathers are bad enough but those baggy spots drive me nuts. I can’t stand to look at this anymore.

Have you ever added quilting to a quilt that was finished? Maybe I should take that whole border off. I am not sure how to tackle this so if anyone has suggestions, let me know! Thanks!

A Small Finish

Yesterday I finished the September a Challenge quilt for the Small Quilt Talk group.

IMG_0733.JPG
I am really enjoying making all my little SQT challenge quilts out of vintage fabrics.

IMG_0734.JPG
I made my mini much smaller than the original pattern by Kathy Tracey. Her version had 16 4 patches in the center and mine only has 4. It measures 9 inches square.

IMG_0737.JPG
I used a vintage feed sack for the back again and quilted with gray thread.

IMG_0739.JPG
I am still working on the QOV on the frame. It is slow going so a little mini quilt makes a fun break (or is that procrastination?!?).

Work in Progress Wednesday

I am back to working on that QOV. The majority of you said to go with the Starstruck panto to quilt it. And I was all ready to do so.

Except I just couldn’t make myself start it.

It would have been easy. And done by now.

But, I knew this top would look better with even a simple custom job. And while in the shower on Monday, it all came to me.

IMG_0730.JPG

Even simple ruler work takes a long time. But this compliments the top instead of just holding it together. It is also good practice since I haven’t done anything with rulers and templates for a while.

I read in my devotions this morning, that the right thing is often not the easy thing. And that goes in quilting as well as other areas of life.

Border Options

I finished my little 4 patches yesterday and put them all together.

IMG_0719.JPG
Now I need to decide on a border. Below you can see pictures of some of the fabrics I auditioned.

IMG_0725.JPG
I am leaning toward the second or last option. I would like to get it bordered and ready for quilting before work today.

Last July, when Mr. Wonderful and I visited his parents in Missouri, my sweet MIL and I visited a few quilt shops. At one, I bought a kit for a quilt. I brought it home and cut out all the pieces and sent it to her. She got it all pieced this past weekend.

IMG_0726.JPG
Isn’t it beautiful? She did such a fabulous job! I can’t wait to quilt this for her. I love you, Mama Mim!

Design Wall Monday

It was a busy weekend around here with as much family time as we could pack in. I did stitch a few more 4 patches though.

IMG_0711.JPG
And I am happy to share with you that Kathie at Inspired by Antique Quilts has written a post about the quilt she made that inspired mine. You can see it here.

I also finished my pumpkin seed blocks this weekend (cue the Hallelujah chorus)!

IMG_0712.JPG
These will be set aside for a while. I intend to use them in a medallion quilt at some point. Said medallion quilt has not been designed yet! I just know that once I start, I am not going to want to take a 3 month break to appliqué blocks!

I also got a wee bit farther on the sock I started on the way to Arizona. (Yes, that is sock, as in singular.)

IMG_0713.JPG
I got half the heel done. I am a very slow knitter. And once I start feeling it in my wrist. I quit working. I hope to get this pair done by Christmas!
