Slow Stitching Sunday

This is what I am slow stitching this weekend.

IMG_0700.JPG
I put all my supplies in one of my vintage enamel pans so everything is handy while watching movies with the fam.

IMG_0699.JPG
I will finish the last of my pumpkin seed blocks!

I also got a tiny start on a new project. I was inspired by a post by Kathie of Inspired by Antique Quilts on Instagram. She posted a picture of a 4 patch quilt with tiny 1 inch squares. I love little scrappy quilts and couldn’t wait to start my own version. She kindly sent me pictures of hers. Between family and work yesterday, I didn’t have lots of time to spend on this but I did get a few blocks made.

I love playing in my scraps!

I am using this die for my studio cutter to cut all my little squares.

Quilting Design

Thanks for all the comment regarding the panto choice for my QOV. Most of you preferred the Starstuck panto. I liked both. However, I decided to wait a few days and play around a bit with some ideas for a custom job. I used an app for my iPad called Adobe Ideas. It allows you to import a picture and then draw on top of it. As you will see, I am not good at drawing with my finger (not good with a pencil either!). Here are some screen shots:IMG_0695-0.PNG

I have too much going on this weekend to focus on actually quilting this but I hope to get some more time to play with the app. This is the first time I have actually used it since downloading it but I think it could be really handy for this.

What do you all use for designing the quilting for your quilts?

Finish it up Friday

I finally finished the QOV top that I have been working on.

IMG_8406.JPG
I don’t know why I have been dragging my heels for so long on putting the borders on. Anyone else hate doing borders? Maybe it was because I not in love with the border fabric. It is the best piece I have in the stash for this and I was determined not to go out and buy anything. I have done enough fabric shopping this summer! Now it is in the frame and ready to quilt.

IMG_8419.JPG
I just have to decide how. I originally planned to do some custom quilting but I am very tempted to finish it up with a panto and call it good. These are the two options I am considering.

Any thoughts?

I need to cut charms today for a swap I am in with the SQT group.

Two sets of lights and two sets of darks.

I have missed spending time in my sewing room; but, I have felt so tired this week, I just haven’t done much. I would just love to get up in the morning and have a whole day to sew. I don’t see that happening in the near future. But one can always dream!

Never forget…

IMG_0691.JPG

I created this quilt in the days following 9/11. In the red stripes, I quilted the following verse:

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. ~ 2 Chronicles 7:14

August/September Goals

So it is almost mid-September and I am just now thinking back to my goals set for August. That should clue you in as to how far behind I am! Here is my August list and results:

1. Finish a current mini made from vintage 30s fabrics. – DONE!

And I made a second mini:

4. Make a lap quilt from a lovely black/white/pink/red FQ stack. This will be a gift if I can get it done by the end of the month. – Not even started.

What else did I do?

I finished this little 9 patch:

2. Complete the SQT challenge for this month in vintage fabrics.

3. Complete the  16 patch quilt I started so long ago that I can’t even remember when I started it!

I better stop there to leave room for those unexpected projects :).

Home again

Well, yesterday was an interesting travel day for sure! My son and I left for the airport at 3:45 in the morning. This turned out to be the middle of a storm producing record breaking amounts of rain in the Phoenix area! Main highways were closed due to flooding and many vehicles were stranded. What should have been a 35 minute drive took 2 1/2 hours! Thankfully, God was with us and we got there and my son got home safely. I missed my flight but was able to reroute and made it home at 10:30 last night.

One adventure I found time for, was a visit to SAS Fabrics.

IMG_1224.JPG

I learned about this gem of a place via Christine who blogs at Triangles & Squares.

I wish I had remembered to take a picture of the inside. It is a huge warehouse type place and they have anything and everything you could want for any type of sewing project. I only frequent the quilting cottons. They have remnants ranging from 1/4-8 yards. All $3.99 a yard. These are quilt shop quality fabrics and you never know what you might find. Here is my haul starting with some vintage Repro prints:

A few modern prints:

A fun novelty print:

And a big piece of this great print for Quilts of Valor.

IMG_0687.JPG
It is good to be home. I need to unpack and do some laundry before working until 9 tonight. If I get enough coffee, I might even get the borders sewn on this QOV.

IMG_0566.JPG
Maybe….

Have a great Tuesday and thanks to everyone for sticking with me even when I haven’t responded to comments while out of town.

Design Wall Monday

I am currently winging my way home after a wonderful time with my kids and Baby L in Arizona. I just love it there. This is what awaits me on my design wall (table?) at home.

IMG_0981.JPG
I can’t wait to play with these! But first I have to add the borders to this QOV and get it loaded onto the frame.

IMG_0959.JPG
And I also have these blocks nagging me.

IMG_0529.JPG
I really need more blocks to get this to the size I want but I don’t feel like making any more. They may have to do some closet time.

Back to work tomorrow. It’s not gonna be easy!

Saturday

My time is slipping away here too fast! I did spend some time stitching yesterday while Baby L napped. I prepped the last of my pumpkin seed blocks.

IMG_0658.JPG
But then realized that I forgot to bring my thread assortment.

Grrrr….

So I switched to hexies and got half a row done before nap time was over.

IMG_0582.JPG
While stitching, I listened to the last of my audio book and then picked out the next one.

IMG_0661.PNG
I have been enjoying getting caught up on blog reading also this week and exploring on Instagram. My nickname there is katyquilts, in case you would like to follow me there.

There was a lovely thunderstorm here last night!

IMG_1195.JPG
The sky was gorgeous!

Baby L and I enjoyed a nice walk this morning.

Hope you are all enjoying a wonderful weekend!

I am quite pleased with how it turned out. I finished stitching the binding on the plane last Friday.

IMG_0645.JPG
I can’t believe I have been here 6 days already! I miss my hubby and family back home but I am having so much fun with family here.

IMG_0646.JPG
Here is a shot showing the back.

Throwback Thursday

A few more quilts from the archives to share with you today. First up is this 25 patch quilt. Not sure if that is the proper name but it works for me. I remember that I was inspired to make this from a very old book that I still own and love called American Patchwork and Quilting published back in 1985! My quilt was made about 20 years ago.

IMG_0586.JPG

I used it on my kitchen table for a long time and then it went to live with a friend who liked it. This is another quilt I would like to make again.

This next quilt was made from a line of fabric made to look like men’s ties. I believe the designer was Shirley Botsford who wrote a book called, Daddy’s Ties.

IMG_0591.JPG
That binding took forever. I remember that I made this quilt while we were living in France so it was sometime between 1997-1999. It was donated to some group to take to refugees somewhere.

This next one was another baby quilt, made for one of my hubby’s coworkers in France that had a baby so it was made in the late 90s also. I made several wonky star quilts like this for baby gifts. They were fast and fun.
