Progress

I made some sewing progress yesterday but not as much as I would have liked. Do we ever? I got this top done except for borders:

IMG_0985.JPG
If I add borders, I can get it up to twin size. This is what is currently needed at our local women’s shelter.

I also finished my blocks for the exchange.

IMG_0989.JPG
And I worked on my Bargello quilt.

IMG_0988.JPG
I started the quilting and quickly decided I didn’t like it. But I didn’t like this quilt enough to rip out the stitching and start again so I carried on. Blech. It’s okay. Just okay. Now I am trying to find a binding so I can call it done and put it away.

IMG_0990.JPG
I also managed to get my laundry done, dinner made, and a bit of housekeeping taken care of.

Today I hope to get the little bargello beast bound before work. Linking up with Connie at Free Motion By the River for Linky Tuesday.

Design Wall Monday

I am going to sew today! Woo hoo! I have to finish a curtain project for church and do laundry but I plan to sew for most of the rest of the day. One project that has been begging to be finished for ages, is this little Bargello experiment.

IMG_8824.JPG
I want to border and quilt it. I also have these on the design wall:

IMG_8823.JPG
On the right hand side are swap blocks for a local guild block exchange. I want to get the rest done today. On the left are the blocks from the Miss Kate scrap bag. I have white blocks cut to add to them. I want to get this pieced this week.

I also want to load some fabric onto the frame to just play with free motion quilting. I really don’t do enough of that.
I have big plans, let’s see how much I get done!

Memory Chain

Several of you asked about the quilt Baby E was laying on in a picture I posted earlier this week. It was nice enough yesterday for a few pictures outside. Here is most of it on the neighbor’s fence.

IMG_8758.JPG
I really wish they would get a new fence that is flat along the top! Here are a few detail pictures.

IMG_8760.JPG

IMG_8759.JPG
I made this in 1999 and the binding is starting to show its 15 years of heavy use.

IMG_8761.JPG
This quilt lives on my bed most of the time in the spring and summer. I just washed it and will be putting it away for a while. The original block pattern is called Memory Chain but I simplified it slightly. The green and pink fabrics are vintage percales and the prints are repro 30s. I quilted it on my 1955 Singer Model 201. This is definitely in the top 5 of my favorite quilts I have ever made.

Finish it up Friday

I finished my 5th shirting quilt. I took pictures before and after washing. I’m a bit of a nerd and find these things interesting to document. Here are the before pics:

And after:

IMG_0959.JPG
Clearly I used white scraps that were NOT all the same! I can live with it. I find I am much more relaxed with my shirtings quilts than others. Maybe because it feels like free fabric. I was also glad to use up some miscellaneous white bits. Here is a peek at the back.

Today, I hope to make some progress on some swap blocks for a local guild back exchange.

Sort of a finish…

Sort of because it is not my finish! I did finish quilting Mama Mim’s quilt last night. These pictures are not the best but I wanted to get it packed up and ready for the post office. So they will have to do.

IMG_8719.JPG
I quilted a freehand feather swirl all over design. I used Omni thread on top (Maple) and Premosoft in the bobbin. I have heard of a lot of people having trouble with Omni lately. I had to use a size 18 needle and that seemed to eliminate all shredding.

I like the way it shows on the back.

Work in progress Wednesday

Good Morning! Yesterday was every bit as full as I expected it to be but I was able to get a surprising amount done around the house, at work, and in the sewing room. I chalk it all up to Gods grace!

I won’t bore you with my household/work accomplishments! I got this quilt top pieced by Mama Mim in the frame.

IMG_0924.JPG
And got it half quilted after work last night.

IMG_0932.JPG
It is difficult to see in the picture above but I am quilting freehand swirls with feathers. I am using Omni thread in Maple on the top and Premosoft from Glide in the bottom. I had to move up to a size 18 needle to avoid thread shred.

Remember the square in a square patterns I printed yesterday? While digging out scraps to make my blocks, I came across some patterns I printed years ago and decided to use those instead.

IMG_0930.JPG
How fun are these? I actually have 6 now. I’m not sure how I will set these yet.

Another full day is ahead of me so I better get ready for it. I am linking up with Lee for WIP Wednesday and Lorna for Let’s Bee Sewcial.

Tuesday

I spent a little time playing with layouts for my Miss Kate fence rail blocks last night.

IMG_0920.JPG

IMG_0921.JPG
I think I will go with one of the above layouts rather than setting them together like this.

IMG_0915.JPG

I also got the binding on my last shirting quilt.

IMG_0918.JPG
I will share this finish on Friday. Hopefully I can get this washed and pictures taken by then.

Yesterday Daughter #1 and I made 24 pints of applesauce from the apples on our trees.

Today will be another very full day with Baby E here in the morning and then working from 1-9 PM. Just in case I feel like a bit of sewing after that, I have the perfect little project ready to go:

IMG_0927.JPG
These Square in a Square blocks are for my October challenge quilt for the SQT group. I will again be using vintage fabrics to make mine.

Have a lovely Tuesday everyone! Linking up with Connie at Free Motion By the River for Limky Tuesday.

Design Wall Monday

A few weeks back, I did something I said I would not do. I bought another Moda Scrap Pack. This time, it consisted of strips from the Miss Kate line by Bonnie and Camille. I trimmed all the strips to 2″ wide with my strip cutter die. I had just enough to make 72 of these 4 1/2 inch blocks.

IMG_0915.JPG
I am debating setting them like this or alternating with solid white blocks to make a bigger quilt.

I worked on quilting my latest shirting quilt this past weekend. I am quilting a wonky grid through the triangles.

IMG_0916.JPG
And I have been practicing McTavishing in the white space.

IMG_0910.JPG

IMG_0913.JPG
Clearly, I have not mastered the art of McTavishing! And why didn’t I use white batting? The seams are shadowing badly. Hopefully washing the quilt when finished will help that.

This quilt was finished quite some time ago and is finding a new home this week. Some friends of ours just welcomed a new baby into their home and this will be for him.

Slow Stitching Sunday

I am looking forward to a bit of slow stitching today. I plan to stitch this label onto this Quilt of Valor and then it will be all ready to go to my state coordinator.

IMG_0907.JPG
I may also do some stitching on this shirting top I got loaded.

IMG_0906.JPG
Hubby and I got my new cabinet home yesterday. I bought this at an estate sale that Daughter #3 was working at. I always wanted a cabinet like this but never had room in my kitchen. I am thrilled to have this one and the side cabinets are a real bonus!

IMG_0905.JPG
Somehow it ended up with three different shades of paint. Eventually I will paint it white. I got it all cleaned up yesterday and removed tons of old, flaking masking tape. I found this note on the inside and decided to leave it.

IMG_0908.JPG
Isn’t that fun? The center section has a roll down door.

IMG_0909.JPG
The shelves each had a very carefully cut piece of old linoleum to fit.

IMG_0899.JPG
It looks great with my vintage enamelware.

Saturday

It has been a full week around here but I managed to sneak in a little sewing on my most recent shirting quilt.

IMG_0895.JPG
If you think this top looks a little wonky, you would be correct. Piecing these long skinny triangles isn’t easy and when doing it with a wide variety of men’s dress shirt fabrics, it is even harder. I could have left out those poly cottons and stretchy bits but they were colors/patterns I wanted to include so I am willing to live with some cut off points and mismatched seams. Life is too short to worry about those things all the time. I can’t wait to get this one on the frame.

I have gotten to spend lots of time with Baby E this week.

IMG_0874.JPG
Those cheeks are so kissable!

Today, Mr. Wonderful and I are picking up this new addition to my sewing room.

IMG_0891.JPG
I am so excited! I also got this so I can reach the top of my design wall.

IMG_0896.JPG
One of my goals this week will be to sort and sell some of the vintage treasures I have collected but am not using. I have a few vintage quilt kits and block sets I am ready to part with. I’ll post them here in case anyone is interested.

Have a wonderful Saturday!
