Finish It Up Friday ~ Michigan

I’ve been waiting a long time to share this project that I started back in October. I’ve kept it under wraps, but I can share it now that it has finally been gifted.

I cut the pieces before I left for AZ. I pieced the top there, and I quilted it when I got home in February. I got the idea from a picture I saw on Pinterest. I tracked it down and it turns out that quilt was made by Life Sew Crafty. Her quilt is much bigger and she cleverly pieced hers to even represent all the counties. I didn’t even try that, I just wanted the outline to be recognizable as Michigan.

I used randomly placed small squares, large squares, and rectangles to fill in the pixelated outline.

I wanted the quilting to have the feel of a topographical map. It is all freehand work.

Many of the prints are from a Tim Holtz Eclectic Elements line. The blue is Moda Grunge, but I don’t remember the exact color. I included a lot of prints with French elements as they will be traveling to France for their honeymoon, and math/ruler stuff for the engineer in the family.

And just for fun, here is an in progress picture showing the top before quilting.

The quilting makes all the difference!

This quilt was made as a shower gift for Daughter #3 and soon to be SIL #2. I will eventually make a bed quilt for them, but she didn’t know what she wanted just yet. I couldn’t let the occasion pass without any quilt, so I made this throw for them. They both love our state of Michigan!

And here is the happy couple! Aren’t they beautiful?

I love them dearly and have no doubt that this is truly a match made in heaven.

Have a great day!

March/April Goals

It’s that time of the month……hahahaha! I crack myself up!

It’s time to look at my goals.  This is what I put down at the end of February.

  1. I want to get this quilt top marked for quilting and basted on the long arm to take with me. Done! And the quilting is coming along faster than expected!
  2. I have to get the top done for Daughter #2’s QOV . Done! In fact, the whole quilt is finished except for the label. I won’t be sharing any more pictures of this until after I present it.
  3.  I want to get another QOV top done for presentation in May. Not done. But it is started.
  4. I need to get my Gwennie Medallion top done so I can quilt it in April and send it off for the show at Quilt Works.  Done, quilted, and bound! And ready to ship!
  5.  I want to get one of the small tops I made finished for our local Habitat for Humanity quilt show/silent auction. Done

I also finished the grad quilt for my nephew and will share that soon. On to April!

1. I must piece and finish the QOV for presentation in May.

2. I want to finish my Scrappy Rectangles quilt.

3.  Finish hand quilting my vintage top.

I have another trip planned this month back to Wisconsin so we shall see what I get done.

Have a great day!

WIP Wednesday ~ Eagle Progress

I started work on the eagle quilt. The eagle is done with fusible appliqué.

I creased the fabric square I am starting with to find the center. I also folded the pattern into fourths so I could use the guidelines to help place the appliqué pieces.

It took some tweaking to get it just right. Here is the final version after fusing:

I need to stitch around the fused pieces and then decide where to go from here.

Have a great day!

Piecemaker’s Quilt Show ~ Part 1

My local guild held our Quilt show last weekend. My City Sampler Quilt took second place in the Art Quilts category.

There were so many beautiful Quilts! I thought I would share a few with you today and some more in a second post. I’ve included close ups of the labels to give credit to the makers.

I think this next one was pretty much my favorite!

Hope you enjoyed these!

Have a great day!

DWMonday ~ Eagle QOV

I mentioned before that I have a second QOV to present in May. For months, I knew exactly what I wanted to make. And then last week it happened. Someone posted a free pattern that could be downloaded to make QOVs and my plan totally changed. I’ve had these fabrics forever and wanted to use them for this QOV.

I don’t have enough to follow this pattern exactly, but then we all know I’m not so good at following patterns anyway! It has an eagle in the center that I love and will use that part. First, I have to cut out and assemble these pieces. The free pattern can be found here.

I’m still not sure I have enough fabrics for the whole top. I found this fabric on the far right in my stash and I’m trying to decide if it fits well enough with the others to use.

Speaking of QOVs, I purchased this panel to use in another QOV down the road.

I think will be a lot of fun to quilt.

Have a great day!

Slow Stitching Sunday ~ Another Binding

All I have left for this Quilt of Valor, is the binding and label!

Here are a few glimpses of the quilting. The color is way off in the first picture.

I won’t show any more of this until after it is presented.

Have a great day!

Finish It Up Friday ~ Gwennie!

Today’s finish is a big one! I’m happy to say my Gwennie Inspired Medallion from the QAL is finally done!

While most people made wall or throw sized quilts, I added enough borders to make mine fit my queen bed. The problem with making big quilts is trying to get good photos. The slightest breeze does this:

Ugh!

Here are some detail shots.

I’m really glad I went back and added more appliqué to the center block.

I used a plain backing and the quilting shows up beautifully.

It fits my bed perfectly!

Now it is ready to send off to Lori at Humble Quilts  for the First Friday show in Oregon in May. I just have to find a really big box.

Have a great day!

Slow News Day

Still working on the same two projects. But I hate to miss a day of blogging, so how about a dog on a quilt?

This old dog will soon turn 15 so he does a lot of this.

Oh, and those labels I needed? I totally cheated.

Have a great day!

Labels….sigh….

I really hate making labels. But now I have three of them to do before dropping my quilts off for our local show. Did I mention they are due this morning? Yeah….

Anyway, our local guild holds a show every other year. These are the three I am entering.

These will probably get quick hand written labels on muslin. I have several other quilts that I want to make embroidered labels for. I started one yesterday, but clearly Mr. Embroidery Machine and I were not getting along.

I had too much non-sewing stuff to do so I didn’t have time to mess with it. I’ll try again today.

Have a great day!

This and That Tuesday

I’m actively working on several different projects right now. I didn’t make as much progress on my hand quilting last week, but I’m back at it now. I can’t say my stitches are improving, but I sure love the texture.

I’ve also started machine quilting the QOV. It is mostly ruler  work and slow going.

And far from perfect at that! Here is a little look at the back.

I have a machine embroidery project that I hope to work on today as well. So much to do, so little time.

Have a great day!
