DWMonday ~ QOV

I’m finally making some progress on Daughter #2’s QOV. I hade one row, two pieced borders, and two straight borders to finish the top. But I just didn’t want to. The pieced borders were made of trapezoids and triangles. Ugh.

Once I forced myself to get those done, the rest of the top was a breeze. I decided against more borders because it would have been too big. I got it in the frame.

Now I have to decide how to quilt it. I used an old calendar to make myself a stencil so I could use my little white board to try out some ideas.

Not thrilled with any of these. I have the binding done, so I hope I can get the quilting plan nailed down today.

Have a good one!

Finish It Up Friday ~ Coins QOV

Another QOV finish to share today. I love that between this and the last QOV, I was able to use nearly every inch of my two jelly rolls.

I used a panto from Urban Elementz called Loop the Loop.

Here’s a look at the back.

And after washing.

All Quilts of Valor are washed before presentation.

Have a great day!

A Crafty Project ~ Magnets

If you’ve read my blog for any length of time, you know I love vintage enamelware. I while back, I found a table top, just the top. Daughter #3 had the brilliant idea of using it for a magnetic bulletin board in the sewing room.

I just  needed some cool magnets. So I picked up this button cover kit.

I used wire cutters to remove the button shank.

Then I chose some fabric scraps and got to work covering the “buttons” according to the package directions. After that was done, I used glue Dots to adhere disk magnets to the back.

And voila!

They work great!

Have a wonderful day!

Gwennie Progress

The quilting on my Gwennie Medallion has begun. I planned to use 60 weight Superior Sew Fine, but I’ve had a lot of issues with thread breakage. Now I am back to my old stand by, Glide thread. No more problems. Her are a few sneak peeks.

It’s very slow going right now. Some of the quilting I love, some parts I want to rip out. Trust me, online pictures can hide a multitude of sins!

Have a great day!

DWMonday ~ Quilting Gwennie

I finally added the last borders to my Gwennie Medallion. The outer border isn’t exactly what I wanted, but this top was all from stash and I wasn’t about to go shopping now.

Before I had the borders on, I started thinking about the quilting. I use an app (no longer available), called Adobe Ideas to “draw” my ideas on a photo. This is the photo I started with.

Here it is with my scribbles on top.

This is gonna take a while! I am planning to decide on thread today and get started soon. I want to use a fine thread in a neutral color and use the same thread throughout.

Have a great day!

Slow Stitching Sunday ~ Hand Quilting

I used to do a lot of hand quilting, but haven’t done so in many years. Until this week. I started working on my antique top. This is how far I have gotten.

Here is the back.

My quilting stinks, but I am forging ahead anyway. I was asked about the batting i am using. I’ve had this around for years and do not know where I bought it. It is 100% cotton and it is made by Mountain Mist. I’m using John James Betweens in Size 10.

I was also asked about what I used for marking.

I used the silver pencil to mark the largest arc for each fan. I did this before basting so I could map out my plan. Just before quilting each fan, I line up the stencil and use the chalk to mark the smaller arcs. You can tell from my pictures above that I am not very exact.

I was also asked about the thread I used for basting. I just used whatever was already on the long arm. It gets removed anyway.

I’m keeping up with doing at least one hoop worth of quilting each day. My fingers are a bit sore!

Finish It Up Friday ~ Marmalade

This little quilt is named after the charm pack that started it.

I’m quite pleased with the quilting on this one. Here’s a peek at the backing and binding.

Yes, snow has returned to Michigan. Yuck! It has caused all my pictures to have a blue cast to them.

This will be donated to our local Habitat for Humanity Quilt Show/Silent Auction coming up in April. I’ll be donating this mini that I finished in January as well.

I sure hope this snow leaves soon.

Have a great day!

Ugh

Thirty minutes of quilting can mean three hours of unquilting. Everything was fine until it wasn’t. I advanced the quilt and saw this.

I finally finished and I’m ready for some binding now.

I’m so over this quilt!

Have a great day!

WIP Wednesday ~ Basting for Hand Quilting

Yes, hand quilting! I haven’t done that in ages! But this antique top is all hand pieced and deserves to be hand quilted. So I’m using my long arm to baste it and will hand quilt it in a hoop.

I’m using this stencil from Fun with Barb

Before loading the top on the frame, I marked the top. But I only marked the largest arc starting at one corner and working my way around until I reached the center. I plan to fill in the smaller arcs as I go.

This is what the basting looks like.

I’m using this batting and ecru thread.

Have a great day!
