DWMonday ~ Home Again

Mr. Wonderful and I spent most of the last week visiting Sweet MIL in Missouri. It was a lovely visit, but as always, too short. When I got home this weekend, I did get caught up on the Palmeteer Point QAL hosted ny Lori at Humble Quilts.

The last clue comes out today. If you are doing this too and it looks like I have more pieces than you, don’t panic! I used a charm pack for my four patches so I have 42 instead of the 25 she said to make. So I made extras of the other pieces too. I can’t wait to see the final layout! It was good to get back to my machine and nice to have something to sit down and mindlessly sew.

It is QOV week here again. This top is the first of four that I need to get done this week.

I wish I had time to do some custom work on this, but I’ll be heading back to Phoenix soon so the goal with this batch is to just “git ‘er done.”

Finally Friday ~ Log Cabin Quilt!

I think it was over a year ago that I cut out the pieces for this quilt!

I used this die from Accuquilt. Honestly, I would never make log cabin blocks any other way. This die can also be used for smaller log cabin blocks or even Court House Steps blocks.

And believe it or not, all the red and green pieces were cut from one length of fabric! The only intact piece I have left to show you is this bit I used as backing on another quilt.

Sorry about the toes! Lol! I did lots of close quilting on this and I love the texture it gives.

I’m not sure you can tell, but I used red thread in the top and bottom of the dark half of the blocks.

September/October Goals

Here is a look at the goals I set for myself in September:

1. I’d like to get my batik rectangles top done and quilted. Done!

2. Quilt any QOVs that come in.

3. Quilt my red log cabin quilt. Done!

4. I really want to finish hand quilting the little indigo and white quilt shown above. Done!

5. I want to finish my little Jeep Quilt. Not done.

What else did I do? I made a table runner out of a practice bit of machine quilting.

I made this small quilt for a blog hop.

And I made a baby quilt for a friend.

I finished my HST quilt also and will share that soon.
A pretty productive month!

On to October.

1. I want to finish the vintage pyramid quilt that I have been hand quilting.

2. Finish the Palmateer Point QAL quilt.

3. The Jeep Quilt.

4. I’d like to work on getting these blocks together into a top.

I also have a big trip to Arizona this month so I better not get too crazy!

Answers to a Few Questions

I had a few questions about my post yesterday. Since I’m not home, I thought it would be easiest to address them here.

First, that beautiful backing fabric is a vintage sheet! Sorry, but I’m pretty certain it is no longer available. But try thrift shops.

Secondly, I cut my binding strips 2.5 inches wide.

I will try to do a more complete machine binding tutorial soon with lots of pictures. But it might be a while. I took my trusty Bernini 1030 in for service recently and it wans to skip stitches every time I do a binding now. Grrrrr!!!

If I go very slowly, it does okay. But who’s got time for that?

Machine Bindng

Mr. Wonderful are on our way to see his mom today! Before I left, I was able to finish this quilt. For time’s sake, I did all the binding by machine. I started by stitching thebibding to the back of the quilt and then pressing the binding away from the quilt.

I never use pins or clips when I bind. I just roll the binding to the front side far enough to just cover the stitch line and top stitch close to the edge.

Monday

Remember this? I finished this top back in Arizona. I’m finally getting around to finishing it!

I thought I would add borders, but I found a great backing fabric that wouldn’t work if this were any bigger.

So I loaded this up and started quilting.

This is the pantograph I am using. It is from Urban Elementz. I buy 90% of my pantographs from them. The quality and customer service has been awesome.

Eastern Market in Detroit

Hubby booked a walking tour of the Eastern Maket in Detroit for us and yesterday was the tour. It was fun and very interesting! For as close as we live, I have really spent very little time in Detroit. I know now that I want to go back and explore more of this colorful city. This is the oldest continuous fruit/veggie market in the US.

I found some quilting inspiration!

Interestingly, they use murals and street art to combat graffiti. And it works!

This next one was in progress.

This building houses artist lofts.

This used to be a brewery, but now it is artist lofts as well.

Love this sentiment.

The murals all have sponsors. The sponsor gets to choose the artist and them for their mural. The first murals were painted here back in the early 1970s.

Such a fun day! I can’t wait to go back. Have a good one!

Finish It Up Friday ~ Batik Rectangles

I finished up my batik rectangles quilt!

I really love the lavender binding. I finished it by machine and I’m pleased with how well that turned out.

I spent way too much time trying to decide on a backing fabric and ended up just using a wide muslin. The panto graph is called Elongated Meander. It is from Digi-Tec.

The rectangles finish at 2 by 4 inches. I used a die from Accuquilt to cut the pieces. If you click this link, you can get free shipping on your order from Accuquilt.
