Slow Stitching and a New/Old Top

Daughter #3 spotted this gorgeous top at a recent sale and scooped it up for me!

It is HUGE! I love the edge treatment though it will be a pain to finish. It has been folded and wrinkled for years. Perhaps since it was made back in the 30’s. I would love to get this in the frame and quilted soon. Any ideas for how to quilt it?

I will ponder that as I work on my pumpkin seed blocks later today. I got 75% of them done on our trip but that last 25% is taking forever!

Lots of Sewing Going On!

I had the day off yesterday and I did my best to make the most of it. In the morning, I finished quilting my friend’s big quilt. I am really happy with how it turned out. I sure hope she likes it too!

It’s hard to find a place to take a good picture. I I used nearly 2000 yards of Premosoft thread from Fil-Tec on this quilt. It has over 186,000 stitches in the quilting. The panto is called Ground Cover and is available from Urban Elementz.

In the afternoon, I watched Baby E while Daughter #1 had an appointment.
And last night, I made 6 receiving blankets for him. Daughter #1 likes the weight of receiving blankets but Baby E has outgrown all of his. She chose flannel and I served the edges to finish.

Today I am working at the library and tonight I get to watch Baby E again.

I am happy it is done! This will be donated to a local shelter.

My second finish was my little pinwheel quit.

I enjoyed making that one so much, that I started another.

I nearly forgot, I also made curtains for Daughter #1.

Big and Little

I have two projects I am actively working on right now. The first is the big quilt that I showed on the frame yesterday. I got two rows of quilting done on it yesterday.

20140731-065746-25066774.jpg
I am thrilled with how this is turning out! The panto is called Ground Cover and it is from Urban Elementz. I know many people quilt this design with a digital panto and their computerized system. I have a paper panto and do it the old fashioned hand guided way. I am using Premosoft thread from FIL-Tec.

I had so much fun making the little pinwheel quilt the other day that I decided to make another! That one had 3″ blocks and these will be two inches finished.

I am using vintage fabrics for this one also.

Work in Progress Wednesday

I am quilting another quilt for my friend. This is a big one for her daughter and son in law. I spent the morning yesterday getting it loaded up on the frame.

I love this maze pattern! Here is a shot of the top before I loaded it.

Isn’t it fabulous? I hope to check thread tension and get this started before work today.

A Small Finish

I finished my SQT challenge quilt yesterday. I didn’t realize until I was taking pictures that I messed up the block layout! Oh well, it is growing on me and overall, I am pleased with how this turned out.

20140729-073213-27133275.jpg
I used all vintage fabrics, including some I picked up at the antique fest recently. It measures 9.5″ x 12.5″. I used Mountain Mist Blue Ribbon batting. I really love it for small quilts like this. It is quilted in a hanging diamonds pattern. It is the first time I have done this but definitely not the last!

20140729-073510-27310602.jpg
I used part of a vintage feed sack for the back and turned the backing to the front for the binding.

20140729-073558-27358334.jpg
This was such a fun little quilt, not sure why I waited until the end of the month to make it!

Design Wall Monday

Thank you for all your comments on my problem child quilt. I am ready to put this one behind me! I am just struggling now with giving away a quilt I am not happy with. If I step back, it is okay. Up close, I see lots of flaws!

On to other things, I finally started working on my July Small Quilt Challenge for the SQT group.

20140727-214525-78325149.jpg
These blocks will finish at 3 inches. The original challenge pattern had 12 blocks but I am stopping at 6. I am using vintage fabrics for this. I hope to get the top done today.

I have another project on the table today.

20140727-214951-78591205.jpg
This fabric is actually from an IKEA duvet cover. I am making curtains out of it for my daughter’s basement.

Problem Child

You’ve heard all week about my current project. Trying to read a pattern, not paying enough attention, too much on my mind, getting bored to tears with it…..

20140727-094458-35098559.jpg
Finally got the blocks together and added scrappy borders to the top and bottom yesterday morning. At 72″ square, it was too big for a lap quilt and too small for a bed. I wanted it bigger so I could give it to the local women’s shelter. I decided to use poly batting since I have a big roll on hand and it is easy care for the recipient.

20140727-094734-35254273.jpg
Gosh, this batting feels thick! I am no expert on poly batting being a cotton girl myself. My las roll was too thin and when I ordered this, I wanted something with a bit more loft.

But not this much.

20140727-094903-35343302.jpg
Good grief, this is not a quilt, it is a comforter! Ugh.

Love the panto I chose but it is too tight for this batt and it doesn’t show anyway.

20140727-095020-35420038.jpg
I had some tension headaches that required ripping and restitching.

20140727-095102-35462575.jpg

I hate this batting. Did I mention that I have a huge roll of it?!?

I waited until all the quilting was done and then ripped and requilted using a big magnet to hold the quilt tight on the frame.

20140727-095215-35535001.jpg
Oh and did I mention that this happened halfway through?

20140727-095257-35577922.jpg
It is off the frame now and trimmed. I will use this for binding and the hand stitching will be my slow stitching this evening.

20140727-095422-35662899.jpg
I hope it is relaxing and not disastrous in any way….not holding my breath.
