Slow Stitching

It has been so cold this past week that all I have wanted to do when home, is sit by the fire and read. I have made progress on my swap blocks and I have kept up with my block a day log cabins. Honestly, most of my time in the sewing room this week has been spent wrapped up and sitting at the computer. I decided if I was going to sit by the fire today, I would at least do some hand work. So I pulled this out from my UFO list.

See that partial row on the left?

2015/01/img_1800.jpg
My only goal for today is to finish that row. Eight hexies. I should be able to get that much done!

What are you working on today? Head over to Kathy’s Quilts to see what others are Slow Stitching today.

Finish it up Friday

I am still trying to believe it is 2015! But it is not hard to believe it is winter. Schools here are closed today. It is extremely cold, windy, and the snow is blowing. I plan to sew since I don’t have to work today. But my sewing will likely be in the form of curtains for Daughter #1. Curtains can change a room so much, they are so worth the work!

The Small Quit Talk group challenge for the month is to make something using a Disappearing 4 Patch block. A nice tutorial for this can be found on Kathy Tracy’s bog here.

Here is the block.

2015/01/img_1734.jpg

The block finished at 4 inches. I chose to make just 4 blocks in a color combination I have noticed lately in some antique quilts.

2015/01/img_1736.jpg
I wasn’t in love with it at this point but I forged ahead.

2015/01/img_1738.jpg
Someone on Instagram said I should put it on point. I wish I had as I think it looks better that way, but it was too late, I had already started quilting it. (BTW, you can find me on IG as katyquilts).

Here it is before washing.

2015/01/img_1757.jpg
And after.

2015/01/img_1758.jpg
I used mono-poly thread for the quilting. The color is more true in the before washing picture. I intend to hang a bunch of the quits that I have made in these group challenges in my stairwell heading to the sewing room. I need to paint first though. Sigh…..I hate painting! Anyway, when I get to that point, I think I will hang this one on point.

Moving forward…..slowly…..

It is cold here! We are expected to have a high of 10 degrees here today. Factor in the wind chill and it’s not fit for man nor beast out there! I sat by the fire and read all last evening, too cold to go down and sew. I did get all the bits prepared for my swap blocks before work yesterday.

2015/01/img_1755.jpg
Now I just need to sit down and sew! I also made my log cabin back this morning.

2015/01/img_1756.jpg
Every block I add to my stack represents one day closer to spring!

Work in Progress Wednesday

It is still frigid here in Michigan. The best way to deal with the cold is to stay in and sew! And that is what I am trying to do, other than the day job, of course. I finished the envelope top this week.

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/003/5689332/files/2015/01/img_17491.jpg
And then I remembered that I had some swap blocks due at the local quilt meeting this month. I didn’t think I had enough of the right fabrics on hand but I didn’t want to go out in the cold, nor did I want to purchase fabrics for swap blocks. The directions said to use lime green and hot fabrics. Hmmmm….I did have a great lime green. I shopped mt stash and came up with these.

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/003/5689332/files/2015/01/img_1750.jpg
I think I have enough to make the required 15 blocks. I would like to make 5 more just to have enough for a bigger quilt. So far, I have one block done.

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/003/5689332/files/2015/01/img_1753.jpg
I hope to get another made before work today. Better get moving!

The UFO Parade of 2015

Well, no trip to Lansing for me yesterday. The windchill was in the minus 15 degree range here and my van doors froze shut! I took that as an indication that I should just stay home. I will try again next Monday. So sad as that means another week without my long arm.

Instead, I used the time to finish taking stock of my unfinished objects in order to set some finishing priorities for the year. I found quite a few! Here they are in no particular order.

1. My envelope blocks. As you know, the blocks themselves are now finished. This will be a small quilt so it shouldn’t take long to finish once I get my long arm up and running again.

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/003/5689332/files/2015/01/img_1710.jpg

2. My Metropolitan Fair churn dash. I have been stuck on this for a while. I have some more of the red paisley and am thinking of adding narrow borders of that to finish it off. /home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/003/5689332/files/2015/01/img_1706.jpg

3. I am still keeping up with my block a day log cabins to add to the pile I already had done./home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/003/5689332/files/2015/01/img_1705.jpg

4. My Shanendoah sawtooth stars are still in the works. I think I am up to 42 blocks out of 96 or so./home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/003/5689332/files/2015/01/img_1711.jpg

5. This has been a UFO for longer than I can remember. I put it on one of my lists to finish last year and it didn’t happen. Sigh./home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/003/5689332/files/2015/01/img_1712.jpg

6. This isn’t really my UFO. These are blocks that were signed at Daughter #2’s wedding in 2013. I want to finish this for her this year. Working full time and having a 6 month old is not conducive to lots of sewing./home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/003/5689332/files/2015/01/img_1713.jpg

7. The more I worked on these album blocks, the less I liked them. I need to make something and get them out of my life./home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/003/5689332/files/2015/01/img_1714.jpg

8. This is another very long standing UFO. The prints were purchased in Amsterdam in 1998! I started piecing this not long after. I have a very limited supply of these fabrics and have never been able to figure out where to go from here. It is too long and narrow. I am loathe to take this apart but it might be the only answer./home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/003/5689332/files/2015/01/img_1716.jpg

9. Another hexie hand pieced project. I have worked on this in fits and spurts over the last year or so. I have been stopped by the fact that I feel it needs an infusion of new scraps. /home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/003/5689332/files/2015/01/img_1715.jpg

10. A little black and white project that I set aside because it was so darn tedious! Maybe I will get back to this./home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/003/5689332/files/2015/01/img_1718.jpg

11. Hmmmm….a wee little challenge that I initiated with an online friend. Back in October….or maybe September….Maybe the real challenge is just finishing it this year, Kathy? LOL!/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/003/5689332/files/2015/01/img_1717.jpg

12. Calendar blocks from 2010. This too was on a UFO list to finish last year. /home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/003/5689332/files/2015/01/img_1719.jpg

13. Pumpkin seed blocks that I appliqued while traveling last summer. The idea was that I would eventually use these in a medallion quilt. /home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/003/5689332/files/2015/01/img_1720.jpg

14. Dear, dear Jane….I started these blocks in 2009 I believe. You may never grow up to be full sized. I should just finish you off….that sounded ominous!/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/003/5689332/files/2015/01/img_1721.jpg

15. These gorgeous blocks were gifted to me by a bloggy friend last year. I haven’t forgotten them, Jan! They will become a quilt for ME this year. They are not all the same size, not even close. So that is likely why the original maker never finished the quilt. I want to take a weeks vacation and do nothing but work on these./home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/003/5689332/files/2015/01/img_1722.jpg

16. I hand pieced these blocks sometime after we moved back from France, which was 14 years ago. They would make a lovely baby quilt for a little girl./home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/003/5689332/files/2015/01/img_1723.jpg

And I might have one to gift this to. Meet my newest grandbaby, due in June 2015!

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/003/5689332/files/2015/01/img_1572.jpg

We don’t know yet if Grand Baby #3 is a girl or not but she/he will be joining this handsome big brother, Baby L.

Design Wall Monday/Getting Things Done

Thank you all for the lovely comments on my wrap up post for 2014. Many of you asked how I get so much done. In short, I drink lots of coffee and my house is not as clean as it ought to be! I also only work 20 hours per week outside the home. My kids are all grown, only Daughter #3 is still at home and she is in college. At least half of the books that I read last year were audio books that I actually listened to while sewing or driving. And I listen to them at double speed. Keeping a blog is my way of keeping my sewing focused. I try to complete one thing each week, even if it is only a small project. I have several projects going at all times so if I get stuck on one thing, I can  move on to the next.

And so, here we are! The first Monday of the New Year and time to get back into the routine of life. I’ve been working on a list of my UFOs as I plan what I want to accomplish sewing and quilting wise this year. One item on that list is the Envelope quilt I started back in November. I started piecing these blocks in a hotel on my way home to visit family. I finished piecing the rest of the blocks this weekend.

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/003/5689332/files/2015/01/img_1732.jpg
These are 6 inch blocks and they were made with two identical charm packs (35 squares in each). I don’t remember the fabric line. This may not be the final layout. I can see I had two blocks turned in this picture. I may add narrow white borders or possibly some solid blocks. I will live with it for a few days and think about it.

I did some cleanup in the sewing room this weekend. I can’t work if there is too much clutter.

Today, if the weather holds out, I will be heading down to Lansing to get my long arm serviced. I sure hope I can bring it back home with me as good as new and ready to sew. I’ve got quilts to quilt!

2014 Wrap Up

What a year it has been!  So much to ponder from the last 12 months and so much to look forward to in the next 12. I like to take stock each year of what I have accomplished quiltingwise. This is primarily for my own information. It  provides an easy to find record when I want to go back and refresh my memory on a project. I think it is good to set goals in different areas of your life, these are just my crafty/quilting goals.

Please note: The photos in this post are NOT to scale. I have pics of minis that are as large as the pic of the king sized quilt I finished!

 Knitting

I wanted to knit 6 pair of socks this year……Bahahahahaha! I knit part of one sock! All year! I knit a mitten and a half that was supposed to be a Christmas gift, sorry Paul!

Books

My goal for the year was 100 books. ~ I only wrote down 80 titles. I read a few more than that but I missed writing several down.

And on to quilts…..

Service Quilts

I planned to make 6 Quilts of Valor completely on my own and I hoped to quilt 12 for others.

I ended up completing 7 QOVs this year and quilting 8 QOVs that were pieced by others. I didn’t get up the guts to sign up as a longarmer until November!

Her are my QOVs:

I wanted to quilt 10 tops for Quilts Beyond Borders this year.  I quilted 9 tops for QBB and then came the great flood of 2014. I sent the finished quilts back along with the one unquilted top.

I also quilted two tops for our local comfort quilts group and made two twin size quilts for them. These quilts go to our local women’s shelter.

Small Quilt Talk Group

I continued to enjoy this group and  I finished 10 of the 12 challenges and made all but one of them in vintage fabrics.

The biggest finish of all for the year was the total renovation of my sewing room after our basement flooded in May. It was more than 6 weeks of hard work but so very worth it! You can see the after pictures here. If you are interested, you can see pictures of my old sewing room here.

A few blog stats

I posted 361 times in 2014.  My most popular post was about my new sewing room (see link above). My most popular tutorial was for my hexie quilt here. I had over 100,000 visitors from 101 countries.

I want to thank everyone that visits and comments. I try hard to respond to all comments but there are times when life just gets too busy. I do read and appreciate each and every one. I enjoy blogging, especially all the lovely people I have met as a result. You are the best!

Time to go compile my list of UFOs so I can set some goals for 2015.

Happy Sewing!

Katy

December Goals, January Plans

Time to look back over the past month and see how I fared on my goals for December!

1. I want to complete the SQT challenge quilt for December. – Hahahahahaha! Nope, not done.

2. I want to finish the Cascadia Mystery QAL quilt from Humble Quilts. – Done! I finished my simplified version and I love it!

IMG_1426

3. I want to complete 12 more sawtooth star blocks. Done!

IMG_1627

4. I will help Daughter #3 compete her not so secret Christmas gift for her someone kinda special. Done!

2

5. I want to quilt one quilt for myself. I am not yet sure what it will be. I hope to decide this week and get it in the frame so I can work on it here and there. Done!

IMG_1538

I actually finished quilting the cheddar quilt for me also. Here is a work in progress shot.

IMG_1625

And not on the list but finished, is my tumbler quilt for the new baby boy we know.

IMG_1700

I also got one more Quilt of Valor quilted.

IMG_1652

Not bad given all that went on at our house in December!

My January goals are as follows:

1. Continue with a Log Cabin block a day.

2. Quilt 3 QOVs. ~ This is iffy at this point. On New Year’s Day, I threw the timing out on my long arm.  Waaaa!!!! I am so sad about this! Now I have to take it an hour away to get it serviced. I just hope it is only timing and not something worse!

3. Make 24 sawtooth stars.

4. Finish my Metropolitan Fair Churn Dash quilt. Possible the top only!

5. Get entries together for two local quilt shows.

6. Make a list of UFOs and plans for the new year. I started working on this and it is a little bit scary!

7. Finish my “Envelope” quilt top that I started on my trip to Wisconsin in November. This will probably be a small quilt but perfect in case I need a baby gift.

I think that is it for now. Revisions may be coming as I work on that UFO list!

Finish it up Friday

Finally, finished  pictures of the Cheddar quilt! I purchased this vintage top a few years back and didn’t even like it that much at first. But it has definitely grown on me.

IMG_1645

It waited patiently in my closet for me to figure out how to quilt it. It really felt right to quilt this with a wonky grid. The piecing is far from perfect and a well measured even grid would have emphasized that. It is sometimes difficult to decide whether or not to machine quilt a vintage top, but in this case, it was an easy decision. The maker of this top was clearly proud of her sewing machine! You can tell by the machine stitched embellishment she put into each block.

IMG_1633 IMG_1636

You can see above some of the age related stains this top had. It also had a band of grime across one section from side to side. Likely from where it was folded. So I decided it had to be washed. It was risky but I threw it in the washer with some color catchers. Here is what they looked like when I took them out of the washer.

IMG_1635

Yikes! The stains are better and the grime is gone. Sadly, some of the cheddar bled onto the muslin giving it a slightly yellowish cast. I am okay with that. It looks better. It is soft and crinkly too. Here are some after washing shots.

I am so glad I finished this one. I am loving using it on my bed. It has been very cold here of late and having three quilts on my bed is NOT too many!

Last Finish of 2014

Thank you for all the lovely comments and emails regarding my tumbler tutorial. I will post again soon showing the piecing differences when using templates that do not have the nipped corners.

But first, here are pics of the quilting process.

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/003/5689332/files/2015/01/img_1690.jpg

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/003/5689332/files/2015/01/img_1691.jpg
I used my own variation of Angela Walters’ hooked swirl design. You can see her video tutorial here.

Here is a shot of the finished quilting taken in late afternoon sun. The shadows are from the window mullions.

And here are pics of the finished quilt after washing.

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/003/5689332/files/2015/01/img_3338.jpgFor some reason, I had a terrible time trying to get a decent overall photo of this quilt! The closeups are better but still not would I would like. Sorry for that!

I am working on a 2014 wrap up post but it may take me a few days to get that ready. In the mean time, Happy New Year  and I wish God’s riches blessings on you all.
