Throwback Thursday

I’m getting ready to work on a baby quilt made from hand dyed fabrics. It made me think of other baby quilts I had made from my hand dyes. It has been a while! All of these were done before I had my long arm and were quilted on my 1955 Singer 201.

The print in the next two is from a vintage piece of fabric I found in a thrift shop. My deep purples, lime greens, and bright blues coordinated perfectly.

I love the look of the morning sun on quilts!

The above quilts have all been gifted and their little owners are growing up. Some are now in school!

Time flies….

The months are flying by! Here is a review of my goals for September:

2. Finish and Mail my bow tie blocks for the swap. Done!

3. Complete all 7 medallions for Brinton Hall. Done! And Started on the path, although this is going MUCH more slowly since returning from our trip!

4. Start and keep up with the mystery quilt that Lori at Humble Quilts will be hosting. Done! I will show this finish tomorrow.

 5. I’m going to go farther than just deciding on a pattern for the second sister quilt and say that I will also cut it out! Done! And the top is  ready for the frame!

6. Quilt any QOVs that come in. Done! I had five to do and all five are done.

As far as other accomplishments for the month, I  made progress on my Dowton Abbey quilt. I am up to 16 of 30 blocks.

And I finished two baby boy quilts.

And I quilted three Comfort Quilt tops.

Time to start planning for October. Yikes! I don’t like the sound of that.

  1. Finish the Tree quilt for my sister.
  2. I know it is a leader/ender project but I am getting the itch to finish that Downton Abbey quilt.
  3. Time to get going on the baby quilt for our newest grandson due in just 9 weeks!
  4. Get my 6 Brinton Hall Medallions together.

And that is all I am going to plan on at this point. I will be making a trip to help my mom out after her knee replacement surgery so I am not going to be overly ambitious here!

Do you have goals for the next month?

WIP Wednesday

I have so enjoyed working on my little Country Roads quilt from the HumbleQuilts  QAL. I really appreciate the time and effort Lori puts in to these. Here is my finished top.

I didn’t have enough of the yellow that I wanted to use so I used something similar in color for the border triangles. I briefly considered adding borders but my eagerness to get to the quilting won out.

I won a lovely box of Aurifil thread a couple years ago. I love it for hand sewing but my Featherweight isn’t a fan. I decided to try it out in my long arm and it worked great!

Yep, back to my stand by grid quilting. I did the lines freehand and I didn’t try very hard to hit the borders of the blocks. It is a humble quilt, after all. After doing the lines one way, I took the quilt off the frame and reloaded it to quilt the lines in the other direction.

The colors are not true in the picture above but the quilting shows up. Now time to decide on a binding.

I really love this block. I’m thinking I might like to make this in a bigger size.

I also finished the last comfort quilt.

I have lots to do before work today so I best get on with it. I hope you enjoy this last day of September!

More This and Thats

Well, I got my laundry done yesterday! But I doubt you stopped by to hear about that. So on to the project progress. I finished quilting the second Comfort Quilt. I have no idea who pieced this top.

I have the last Comfort Quilt on the frame now. Again, I have no idea who the piecer is.

I also took the time to raise my frame yesterday. I’m trying to find that perfect height to make it easiest on my neck and shoulders. I asked around and watched a Jamie Whalen video on YouTube about it. It is a bit of a job to do, not something that can be easily changed. It seems really high right now but I am going to live with it for a while.

I finished the tree top last night!

I would really like to get this quilted this week, but we shall see. First, I have to get that last Comfort Quilt done!

Have a great day, everyone!

Design Wall Monday

Good Morning! I’m getting a slow start today. Hopefully a second cup of coffee will help! First up on the quilting agenda, is to finish quilting this Comfort Quilt.

I’m quilting a freehand swirl/feather pattern and it is a fairly small quilt so it shouldn’t take too long.

I want to get this tree top together today as well. I’m falling out of love with it so I need to hurry and finish. I’ve decided it is big enough for a generous couch quilt. I might use the extra pieces in the back.

I need to dye some fabric for Daughter #1’s Baby #2 quilt but since it started raining, I may not get to that today. I have purchased an embroidery/appliqué pack to make blocks and I would like to do a test block today.

I purchased this ruler a while back and just took it out of the package this morning. Sewing curves has not been my thing but I think it is time to try. I even have a couple layers cakes set aside for this.

Today, the last step for the Country Roads QAL hosted by Lori at Humble Quilts came out. So there is that clamoring for my attention as well. Time to decide on which yellow/cheddar I want to use.

And that sweater that needed mending? Didn’t happen. But I want to wear it to work. It is so hard to find a goid white cardigan. So maybe today?

The kitchen is clean and the laundry started so it is time to sneak down to the sewing room. Happy Monday!

Sunday This and That

Good morning! Hubby is finally home from China safe and sound. And soundly sleeping at the moment. I finished quilting a top for my guild’s Comfort Quilts group this weekend. These ho to the local women’s shelter.

Believe it or not, that backing is lavender! Cameras are funny things, especially when you are taking pictures of a solid color. It wants to make it white.

I forgot to show one more quilt from the show that I loved. These heroes were about a half inch.

And here is my slow stitching pike for today.

I’m going to try to mend that white sweater on top. I washed it once and this happened.

Grrrrr! After that, and only after, I will sew some hexies for Brinton Hall. My progress has been pitifully slow since getting back from our trip. I just don’t watch TV when hubby is gone.

Time to get ready for church. Have a great day!

Quilt Show

A coworker told me about a nearby quilt show this week. So I headed down to check it out after work yesterday. It had nearly as many vendors as quilts in the show! This was, hands down, my favorite quilt there.

I wish they would have had it displayed so you could see the whole thing but they hung it folded in half. Such a shame, especially since there were so few quilts to begin with.

The cool thing about this quilt was the machine quilting done on a chain stitch machine!

This rebel quilter was stippling long before most of us were born! And she must have quilted it upside down so the chain showed on top. Here is a peek at the back.

And no, I didn’t touch it to take the picture. LOL  ! This next quilt was done by the same lady. I couldn’t see the back to see if she quilted this one with a chain stitch as well.

Here is another oldie that I loved.

This Dear Jane was stunning.

The flower was apparently the ribbon but there was no indication of category. I found that frustrating.

It was a fun afternoon, but not a must see show. Given the space they had, it could have been really great. I think they need to work on getting the word out so more quilts are entered next time.

Happy quilting!

Finish It Up Friday ~ Quilts of Valor

Happy Friday, everyone! I’ve been working on Quilts of Valor for the Stitching Sisters group and have saved them all up to show you today. This first top was made by Val. I love the pattern.

This log cabin top was pieced by Karen.

This lovely top was pieced by Kathy.

A Carpenter’s Star, also by Karen.

This last one was also pieced by Val. I hadn’t custom quilted any of hers yet and this one just begged for it! It took longer but I think it was worth it.

And one more shot because I just love the texture and it really shows here.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

More Quilts in the Wild

Here are some more quilts that I saw while visiting antique shops with my hubby. Again, none of these made the trip home. This  double wedding ring has been loved to death!

This cactus basket was only slightly less worn. I love the green of the baskets.

This was a neat bow tie variation.

Love this block.

This next one is my favorite.

How do you like this pieced back?

Another bow tie with great fabrics.

Snowball.

Economy block. We also found a couple toy sewing machines but they were trop cher for the condition.

I did bring home a set of 8 shoo fly blocks.

The picture of the striped block shows the truest color for the background.

Have a wonderful day!

WIP Wednesday

So glad you all enjoyed a peak at my visit to Missouri Star Quilt Company! Here are my WIPs for the week. First, I finished Step 2 of the Humble Quilts QAL and am anxiously awaiting the final installment.

I really like this block! The fabrics here all came from Homestead Hearth scrap packs that I showed las week.

I have also put in lots of time on the drapes for church this week.

Not so interesting to look at right now! I want to get these finished before work today so I can get back to more quilty projects. Like this  Quilt of Valor for the Stitching Sisters group. You can’t tell, but this is a Carpenter’s Star on the frame.

I have three other QOVs done and one more after this one to do for this month. I will be picking up some tops to quilt for our local women’s shelter this week so I want the QOVs done by Friday.
