Blogger’s Quilt Festival 2017 ~ Scrappy Rectangles

Today I am sharing with you my second entry into the BQF, my Scrappy Rectangles quilt. I am entering it into the Scrappy Quilt Category.

I got the idea for this quilt from another blogger, Lynn, over at Klein Meisje Quilts.   It was a perfect leader/ender project for using up scraps.

I cut each of my rectangles at 2 by 3 1/2 inches. My quilt finished at around 96 inches square. It doesn’t look square in this next photo, but it is!

The only scraps I didn’t use were civil war repros. Everything else went in:

Here’s a shot showing my wide binding and the backing fabric.

The pantograph I used for the quilting is called Woven Wind and it is available from Urban Elementz. I just love the texture it gives!

To date, this is my second most re-pinned quilt on Pinterest at well over 6,000 repins! It’s living on the guest bed for now.

And that’s a wrap! Be sure and check out all the other lovely quilts entered into the BQF. You can find links to all the categories here.

Have a great day!

Blogger’s Quilt Festival 2017! ~ Original Design Category

It is that time of year again! Amy over at Amy’s Creative Side is once again hosting the Blogger’s Quilt Festival.
I’ve decided to enter my QR Code quilt into the Original Design Category this time.

Here’s the story behind the making of the quilt.  I used a free online QR Code generator to get this:

My road map!  I used this Fusible Quick Grid product. You cut all of the squares you need, place them in position on the fusible grid and fuse them in place.

IMG_6549

It was a good move. It was like a jigsaw puzzle to put all the pieces in place and that was quite fun! This shows all the squares fused in place.

And with the rows in one direction sewn, you can really see how the size changes.

Next came borders and quilting. I wasn’t sure how the quilting would go with the layer of fusible in this, but it worked out just fine.

I quilted this in a simple free hand grid. No rulers. I just eyeballed the middle of each one inch square. When I got all the lines done in one direction, I took it off the long arm frame and rotated it 90 degrees and reloaded it. I love this backing fabric from Ikea!

IMG_9570

You can see the quilting better here. It is far from exact, but it works for me.

And there you have it. A long story indeed for a small quilt! Best of all, it works! If you have a QR Code scanner app on your phone or mobile device and scan this quilt (even the picture of it), it will bring you to my blog! How cool is that? It makes this nerdy little heart happy🙂.

Head on over to Amy’s Creative Side to see more of the Blogger’s Quilt Festival! You may even win some prizes.

Have a great day!

WIP Tuesday? ~ Parson Gray

This quilt is coming together VERY quickly!  Since half the blocks only have three pieces and the other half only have four, I shouldn’t be surprised! A day off work and a bit of a marathon sewing session didn’t hurt either!

I finished all the blocks and got them all up on the design wall.

Before I knew it, I had the top all together. I had the perfect piece of flannel for the backing and it only required one seam to piece it. So I got it loaded up and started quilting.

The pantograph is called African Samba and is available from Urban Elementz.

I even have my binding ready!

Have a wonderful day!

DWMonday ~ Parson Gray

I picked up a layer cake of this Parson Gray fabric the last time I visited Missouri Star Quilt Company. IMG_4549

I finally decided how I wanted to use it and got my pieces cut last week.img_8554

And I have now started piecing. There will be two blocks for this design. The background fabric is Aged Muslin from Marcus.

Together, they can be set to make this pattern. The squares finish at 4 inches, so it is a bit chunky looking.

I didn’t want to cut up those wonderful patterns too much though. And I wanted something fairly quick and easy to finish.

Have a great day!

Bucket Bag

Daughter #2 gave me some of her old ABU pants for the fabric because I wanted to make a bag. I found a tutorial at We All Sew for a bucket bag that looked like just the ticket!

I also had this key chain that I wanted to incorporate.

It took a bit of creative piecing to get a flat piece this size. I was able to use three of the pockets in it.

I don’t normally sew bags, but I’m pretty happy with how this turned out!

It is pretty roomy, I tucked a throw quilt inside.

The rope serves as closure as well as back pack straps.

Daughter #3 graciously served as model.

Have a great day!

Block Testing ~ Star Thistle

Recently, Jayne from Twiggy and Opal  , asked for pattern testers for a new block pattern she had created, Star Thistle. I love Jayne’s work so I quickly raised my hand to try it out!

Her pattern was very well written and easy to understand. Here are the fabric and pattern pieces I started with.

I made the little pieces for the middle first.

I like the way she blunted the tips of the pattern pieces. This makes it easier to line up with the other paper pieced bits.

Here is one quarter of the block.

And the back side.

And here is the completed block!

Pretty cool, huh? I think there could be some awesome secondary designs if you made more blocks. I decided to add 2 1/2 inch strips to the sides, quilt it and make a pillow.

My center could use a bit of work, but I love how it turned out!

If you would like to make one or more of these blocks, you can get the pattern for FREE in Jayne’s Craftsy Store.

Have a great day!

Finish It Up Friday ~ Twist!

I’m so excited to share this finish with you today! As you may remember, this quilt all started with a jelly roll that Daughter #3 gave me for Mother’s Day this year. img_6350

I loved the fabrics and enjoyed coming up with a block pattern in EQ7 that would use pretty much every little bit of it!  And here it is!

I used a pantograph by Patricia Ritter called Time Warp on this.

I love the texture it gave! And it was easier to stitch than it looks.

I used an Ikea sheet for the backing and white Glide thread for the quilting.

The binding was a find from SAS Fabrics in Phoenix. I think It is a Michael Miller print.

The white fabric is also from Ikea. I’ve started buying this by the bolt!

If I were to make this again, I think I would use two different prints in the blocks to emphasize the twist. For this project, I love it as is!

Have a wonderful day!

Throwback Thursday ~ Tumbers

I love tumbler quilts and have made a whole bunch of them! I thought it might be fun to look back at a few of them. If you would like to make your own, I have a  Tumbler Tutorial here.

This first one was a baby quilt made for a coworker.

This one was a Quilt of Valor.

This was a wedding gift.

This miniature was made a LONG time ago out of vintage fabrics.

I made this one out of all Denyse Schmidt fabrics and gave it to my niece for her high school graduation.

Wow, bad picture here! This was another baby gift.

And while it looks much bigger than the photo above, this is another miniature made with scrappy tumblers sent to me by a friend.

WIP Wednesday

I still am working on multiple projects. But things are getting done, so I guess it is all good! I finished this binding last night.

And I totally changed my mind on the pattern for this quilt. But it is now all cut out and ready to sew.

I cut some more triangles for my Gee’s Geese quilt.

And I finished the first set of broken dishes blocks for the swap.

Hubby and I are heading out of town again next week and I want to get these done before I go. I also need to get going on the last border for my Gwenny Inspired medallion. I am still stumped with the fish theme! LOL!

Have a great day.

Rearranging

I needed to evict some serious dust bunnies from the quilting room last week. I decided to try rearranging a few things in the process. I really wanted more design wall space. My sewing room is very large, but wall space is at a premium. I also wanted to get my Singer 201 out where I could use it.

So first, I cleared off my bulletin board and covered it with a Fons & Porter Design Wall sheet. And moved my large sewing desk so I could reach the wall.

I know, I still have stuff in front of it, but at least I can use it for miscellaneous blocks and such. If I decide to keep using it, I will lose the big apple!

I moved the sewing desk to the island and dropped a 301 in it.

I’ve been using this machine as my daily piecing machine since I picked it up at a yard sale this summer. It is nice to have it set into the desk.

And my 201 is uncovered and ready for use over here.

A month or so ago, I picked up an enamel table top while out junking with Daughter #3. It was just the top. Daughter #3 had the idea to use it as a magnetic note board. So that got hung up as well.

I also picked up a quilt ladder at a recent garage sale. It will do nicely to hold WIPs without having them moved out of sight.

You can see pictures of how this all looked when I first moved into this room here.

I love rearranging things, but most of the big things in my room are very much fixed in place, like the long arm and computer area. We’ll see how this goes. I’m still pondering possible changes. At least it is a lot cleaner than it was!
