Slow Stitching Sunday ~ Vintage Stars

I’m still working at hand quilting this top. The quilting doesn’t seem to show much though.

Here is the back. I have 8 of 30 blocks  quilted so far.

I love how the person who made these blocks made her scraps work, even when they were too small. Many of the pieces are pieced.

Just goes to show, you can make the most beautiful things out of scraps and leftovers!

Have a beautiful day!

Another QOV

This QOV top was made by Lynda.

I used this panto on it. I’d forgotten how much I like this one!

Here is the back.

And a detail shot.

Have a great day!

Finish It Up Friday ~ Broken Dishes Baby Quilt

I finished the binding on this baby quilt while traveling. I like having baby quilts on hand for gifts so this is another to add to that pile. I gave two away last month.

The colors are much brighter than they appear in these pics.

Here is the back.

You might remember that I used a low loft poly batting for this. It’s okay, but I really prefer the weight of cotton or a cotton blend batting.

Have a great day!

Quilts of Valor!

I picked up another batch of tops from the Stitching Sisters group. Here is the first one quilted.

It’s a lovely top, so flat and square. I wish I had a better way to take photos so they looked flat and square! But I only photograph these indoors since I don’t want to chance getting them dirty.

I used a pantograph called Fern Gully. Here is the back.

And the next one is loaded and ready to go!

Have a great day!

Stress Quilting

Do you quilt when you are stressed? I do. But I don’t want a complicated project to sew.  While waiting for news last week about my sweet father in law, I grabbed these HST blocks and started sewing them together.

I had pressed all the seams to the dark side,  so I sewed pairs together like this because the seams would nest making it easy.

No design wall was used. I just grabbed pairs and put them through the machine. Then I put the pairs through.

Soon I had ten rows of 8 HSTs.  I pressed the seams all the same way and then flipped every other row.

It wasn’t quite big enough for a baby quilt so I added plain borders.

I had a piece of leftover poly batting that was the right size so I threw this on the frame. Three rows of this panto and the quilting was done.

I found enough  binding left from another project to finish this.

And this is exactly why I don’t mind having some bits and pieces laying around my sewing room. In no time at all, I had a baby quilt nearly finished and it was a wonderful stress reliever to boot.

BTW, thanks again for your kind comments. Also, thank you for the batting suggestions! I’m going to try Quilter’s Dream next.

Have a great day!

Vintage Stars

Thank you are all of your sweet comments. I’m sure you’ve noticed that I’m behind on responding again. The trip we made was to see my sweet father in law who is now in hospice care. He is staying at the most wonderful hospice house. My dad is still in hospice care but at his home. What a crazy year it is turning out to be! We are thankful for every minute spent with family.

I’ve made some progress on hand quilting my vintage star top. It is slow going, but very relaxing to stitch.

I used a plain unbleached muslin on the back. The color is off here. I’ve not marked anything, just freehanding it.

This next picture shows what the long arm basting looks like on the back.

This is the batting I am using. I’m not in love with it. Anyone have any suggestions for a good 100% cotton batting for hand quilting?

Forging ahead. Have a good day.

DWMonday ~ Vintage Stars

As I was debating with myself about which vintage top to quilt, some things came up which left me very frustrated. No more time for debate, I wanted to get going on hand quilting NOW!

So I went back to the star top and loaded it on the long arm for basting.

I decided to try a little different method this time. I just quilted large squiggles at 4 stitches per inch.

I did play a little with my drawing app. I wanted an all over design that I didn’t have to mark. Here are some things I tried.

In the end, I decided to go with this.

I’m so glad that I rediscovered hand quilting. It is very therapeutic! And I got this basted just in time as we ended up heading out of town the very next day to see a family member that is gravely ill.  So that meant travel stitching.

Have a great day!

Jeep Invasion 2017!

A couple weekends ago, the mister and I attended our first Jeep event together since I got my Jeep, Oscar. It was held at Silver Lake Sand Dunes on the west side of Michigan. That area is absolutely gorgeous!

Friday evening I got out on the dunes for my first off road experience. Wow! It was a mix of pure terror and total euphoria!

I spent a lot of time watching YouTube videos and reading the Wrangler forums for info on off-roading in the sand. But nothing can really prepare you for the first drive down a hill so steep that you can’t see the bottom! Or driving up one where all you can see is sky until you make it (hopefully) over the crest.

You really can’t tell in pics how big these hills are.

They had over 900 Jeeps that took part in this event.

This was the first road trip I can remember taking in years that I didn’t bring ANY sewing with me. Hubby was my co-pilot, but I did all the driving.

I found out that Jeepers are some of the nicest people you could ever meet. Like quilters, they are always ready and willing to lend a helping hand and encouragement  to us newbies.

I can’t wait to go again!

Have a great day!

Finish It Up Friday ~ Sea Sick!

I’m still quilting and finishing tops that I stitched up last winter in Arizona. I made this top all from Cotton and Steel FQs. I used Bonnie Hunter’s tutorial called Scrappy Trips. You can find it here.

I started calling it Sea Sick because it kinda made me feel that way! This is one busy mix!

It is hard to photograph a big quilt; this one is 96 by 96 inches.

This next pic shows the lengths Mr. Wonderful will go through to support my crazy ideas. I told him I wanted a full on shot so he used his drone to take some of these photos as well as a video at the end of this post.

I quilted this top with a pantograph called Malachite, available from Urban Elementz. I wanted a lot of texture, but I knew details sure wouldn’t show.  This next pic shows the back.

I love how it looks on my guest room bed!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Decisions, Decisions

I was getting ready to baste this top for quilting, when I remembered a couple other vintage tops I had stored away.

I bought both of these from the same dealer at an antique fair quite a few years ago.

This one needs a few repairs like this:

This one doesn’t lay real flat.

It also needs a repair.

As I write this, I’m reminded of yet another top I have that would be a great candidate for hand quilting. Hmmmm……what to do, what to do!

Have a great day!
