Finish It Up Friday ~ Hexie Quilt

It’s done! I started piecing this top back in 2013. It is mostly hand pieced, but I did machine sew a few seams.

It isn’t a true charm quilt as there are repeated fabrics.

Here’s a look at the backing fabric. It’s a Robyn Pandolph print I had in my stash.

I kept the quilting pretty simple, just freehand continuous curves in the hexies, and a Gothic arch border.

I rather wish that I had quilted it more closely, but it is what it is.

Many people use The English Paper Piecing method to piece hexies. I’m not a fan of EPP. These are hand pieced the traditional way, by marking seam lines on the back of each piece.

This is where I’m displaying it for now. It finished at about 55 by 70 inches.

Have a great day!

January/February Goals

I never did set any goals for myself in January! I guess that means I met all of them….or none of them! 😳 Anyway, here is what I did finish this month.

My Jeep quilt.

And one baby quilt.

I’ve also quilted five QOVs this month. Hmmmm…..I am much more productive when I set goals for myself! So in February, I would like to:

1. Finish my Redwork quilt.

2. Finish my Granny Square quilt.

3. Quilt 5 QOVs.

4. Finish my Broken Dishes quilt made from swap blocks.

5. Make one small quilt l pinned from Pinterest.

6. Decide on a design for a wedding quilt for my niece.

7. Finish my hexi quilt.

Based on my accomplishments in January, this might be a bit aggressive. We’ll see. I would like to try to complete one UFO, quilt five QOVs, and make one small Pinterest inspired quilt each month.

Have a great day!

Small Quilts 2017

Here are all the small quilts I made in 2017. I define small quilts as anything smaller than a baby quilt. Most of these are much smaller. Enjoy!

Have a great day!

Hand Pieced Hexi Quilt

I needed a break from sewing swap blocks the other day, so I pulled this out. I decided it is big enough and should be finished.

I searched through my stash and found this green print for the border.

I even fussed around with mitering the corners. Not the best work, but good enough for me.

Now, I just have to figure out how to quilt it.

Have a great day!

Slow Stitching Sunday ~ Vintage Redwork

Remember this vintage top? It was given to me by a friend a number of years ago.

I basted it on the long arm last week to prepare for hand quilting.

I’m going to try to pace myself by quilting just one fan per day.

I’m using this giant Baptist fan stencil. It is my favorite for hand quilting. It is available from Barb at Fun With Barb.

I know there are many opinions on this, but I decided to mark with a blue washout marking pen. I’m actually only marking every other arc and eyeballing the arc in between.

I estimate that I will need to make 24 fans to finish this top. If I keep up with one per day, it should be done in three weeks. I’ll plan on four weeks to give my wrist some breaks.

Also, in case you missed it yesterday, the code for 15% off at The Dutch Label Shop is katyquilts15. I will let you all know what I think after I’ve had a chance to wash something with the labels attached.

Have a great day!

Dutch Label Shop

I was recently contacted by the Dutch Label Shop and asked if I would like to try out their labels. I looked at their site and was intrigued so I accepted their offer of a voucher and thought I would share my experience here.

I’m admittedly not good about labeling things. After the binding is finished, I’m over it! I have some little labels that I can insert as the binding is sewn, but I never remember to use them. They all say Nana anyway! So I decided to take the lazy way out and order iron on labels.

I got one set to put on gifts, and the other set in case I sell a quilt.

To attach, you just use an iron on cotton setting, no steam, and a bit of parchment paper.

Iron for 20 seconds and let cool for two minutes.

And voila!

I felt quite virtuous labeling three quilts in under 4 minutes!

The labels are nicely embroidered. There are many options as far as size and styles and you can even add a custom logo.

The Dutch Label Shop is also offering 15% off your order for my readers. Just use this coupon code: katyquilts15

Have a great day!

Bed Quilts 2017

I made several bed size quilts in 2017. I think this first one was my favorite. I made this as a leader/ender scrap project. The top was completed while I was still in Arizona. It has quite a few scraps from dear reader, Ila. I wouldn’t have been able to finish this without her help!

This next one is tied for favorite! This was made during the Gwennie Inspired Medallion QAL . The idea of a collaborative project was started by Lori at Humble Quilts. Five of us were in the group and each suggested a theme for one of the “rounds.” As you can see, I added more rounds than that and mine grew to queen sized!

This one was a grad gift for my nephew.

This was my very last finish for 2017.

Another scrappy rectangles quilt, this time in batiks.

My Cotton and Steel Scrappy Trips quilt, AKA Sea Sick.

Shenandoah Stars was a long time UFO.

And my 1930s Ohio Stars.

I really love making bed size quilts. I’m so thankful for my long arm that allows me to do this!

Have a great day!

Last January QOV

This QOV top was made by Val. I love the pattern!

Here’s a look at the back.

I hope send this panto from Urban Elementz . It’s actually a bit too wide for the 18 inch throat of my machine, but since it is done in two rows, I can adjust and make it work.

My two local grandsons spent the night. They are such a joy!

Have a great day!
