Another Shirting Quilt

I started making blocks for the second quilt. I’m randomly piecing these. Here is one block.

These finish at 9 by 12 inches and they go together very quickly. The squares are cut 3 1/2 by 3 1/2 inches and the rectangles are 3 1/2 by 6 1/2 inches. Here are 20 put together.

Daughter #1 posted these two pictures of my dad yesterday. The first is with Big E, the second with Little E a few years later. He sure loved his little guys! You can see how the cancer was taking it’s toll. I was piecing together bits from both of these shirts when she posted these.

I hope to finish this top today. Then I’ll move onto the tumbler top since I still haven’t decided on borders.

Have a great day!

DWMonday ~ Shirting Quilt

Here s the first of three quilts I am making from men’s shirts. My first thought was to randomly piece and place these into a fence rail setting.

But it bothered me. So I started making things a bit more orderly and ended up with this.

The color is more accurate in the first photo.

These quilts will be smaller than I would like, each about 50 by 60, but size is dictated by the amount of shirts I had to work with. I could add a border yet. I’ll move onto piecing the next one and think about that.

Have a great day!

Slow Stitching Sunday ~ Redwork

I’ve finished quilting all around the outside edge of this quilt.

Here are a few more fun blocks.

This one is my favorite.

The raggedy batting was driving me nuts, so I went ahead and machine stitched the binding.

Looks like I have a choice between hand stitching binding and hand quilting today.

Have a good one!

Tiny Blocks

Remember this?

This is the little quilt I made from the Humble Quilts QAL called Midwinter Blues. I loved these blocks and have wanted to make another quilt with this black color pattern ever since. I finally took a few minutes to cut pieces for a four inch finished block.

These are the dies I used.

I have an adapter so I can use GO! dies in my studio cutter. Here is my finished block.

I think I will make a few more and make a mini quilt. If I decide to do a bed quilt, I’ll make the blocks in a larger size.

BTW, you can check out all the current Accuquilt deals here.

Finish It Up Friday ~ French General Granny Square

Another UFO is done! I’m quite pleased with how this turned out. It all began with a jelly roll of Le Marais by French General that I got on sale. Of course, that jelly roll wasn’t enough so I bought some FQs so I could make more blocks. Then I had to track down border fabric.

Here it is on my queen size bed.

I do all my continuous curve quilting freehand. It would look better if I used a curved template, but I’m always in too much of a hurry!

This is where I’m displaying it until I decide where it will live. I wish it was a bit bigger, but I made it as big as I could with the fabric I had. It hasn’t been washed yet, but it will shrink a few inches when I do. It currently measures about 85 inches square.

I’m finally learning how to fill a wide border with feathers.

Have a great day!

QOV #7

I’ve decided to number my Quilt of Valor posts. Then it will be easy to figure out how many I’ve done during the year. This top was made by Val.

Here is a look at the back.

And this is the panto I used. It is available from Urban Elementz .

Have a great day!

First February QOV

I had such a great time at the National QOV Sew Day with my Stitching Sisters! I brought back four tops to quilt this month. The first top was pieced by Rosa.

This is the panto I used. Since Digital-Tech and Urban Elementz have merged, it is now available through Urban Elementz .

Here is a look at the back.

The next one is on the frame and should be done tomorrow. Have a great day!

Quilt Show

Last weekend was the Annual Quilt Show held by the North East Arts Council of Michigan. It isn’t a large show, but it is nice. It is held in a former church.

Here are some of my favorites from the show.

This one had the Jeep row that I still haven’t finished!

The next five photos show my entries.

It’s a lovely venue, but very difficult to get good photos!

Have a great day!

Slow Stitching Sunday ~ Red work

I had several questions about the quilting on this last week. I know when quilting by hand with a hoop you are supposed to start in the middle and work your way out.

As you can see, I’m doing just the opposite. Traditionally, Baptist Fans were quilted from the outside in at a large floor type of quilting frame. The fans were not marked, but each one built upon the last freehand. I’m using a stencil, but wanted to let my fan placement occur organically as it would if I used a large frame. I’ve basted well and I think it will work out fine.

I figured, if Bonnie Hunter can do it this way, so can I! And just for fun, don’t you love this dog block?

I haven’t kept up with one fan per day since I took time out to bind my hexi quilt this past week.

Have a great day!

National Quilt of Valor Sew Day!

Today is the National QOV Sew Day and I’m heading down to spend the day sewing with my Stitching Sisters group. I’m so excited! We are all bringing Disappearing 9 Patch blocks to make tops.

These are really easy. For our blocks, we started with 5 inch squares.

See them up into a 9 patch.

Then cut them in half twice.

Rearrange and sew back together.

I’m bringing 9 blocks.

Have a great day!
