What if? Part 2

When we left this project last, I had gotten this far.

Then took what might seem like drastic measures and sliced it diagonally.

I rearranged.

And sewed it back together.

Then I turned it and sliced again.

After rearranging and sewing again, I got this. That is what I was looking for!

This is a simple no waste way to put a quilt on point. The downside is that the points on the side will get lost in the seam when I add a border or binding. Also, your edges will all end up on the bias.

Here’s a side by side comparison with the before on the left and after on the right.

It’s a doll quilt, not a masterpiece so I’m still okay with losing the points in this case. And I actually like both versions of this. It was a fun little experiment. Time to think about a border.

What if?

I saw an antique quilt on Instagram and fell in love with it. You can see it if you click here. Isn’t it lovely? It is a simple square in a square quilt. I wanted to make a small one, but thought there must be a simpler way than adding all those triangles to the sides of the squares. So I pulled out this die.

And made a bunch of these.

Then I got out my tub of 2 1/2 inch squares.

And I ended up with this.

And yes, it doesn’t look like the original. Yet.

Iceland Part 10

Thank you all for your recent comments! Once again, I’m way behind on responding and may never get caught up! On to trip photos.

These photos were all taken on our last day Iceland in the Reykjanes area.

There is so much geothermal activity here!

These photos don’t do the colors justice.

That is pure steam flowing out of the earth!

I didn’t need another hobby….

…. Mr. Wonderful would probably say obsession. But here I go! I acquired this lovely house from my good friend, Donna and her daughter.

It needs a few repairs and some finishing touches.

I’m so excited about this! It is something I’ve always wanted.

I couldn’t resist putting some of the furniture in.

There will be an awesome sewing room in that attic space!

I only have a couple Iceland posts left, so I think the doll house will be my Saturday subject going forward.

Finish It Up Friday ~ Bliss

Even after all this time, every quilt brings lessons with it.

Remember when I wondered if this was too busy? I think I was right. But did I listen to my gut? Nooooooo! I forged ahead anyway.

A more surprising lesson, was how well old 80s prints from the deep stash worked with this current layer cake.

I used the above panto from Urban Elementz and I think that worked well here. I like the curvy quilting with the straight lines of the triangles. Another old print for the back and binding.

I’m not fishing for comments here, just musing on lessons learned. This isn’t my favorite quilt. So, I think it’s worth pondering why. I think part of the reason is that it is just not a “me” quilt. I love these fabrics, but in general, I’m not a floral girl. I think I would have liked this better if I had added a solid to give those beautiful prints some breathing room. That would have eliminated the need for the side borders as well. They do the job, but they are just okay.

In the end, finished is better than perfect. I’m pretty sure I can find a home for it.

A Little Finish

Sometimes you have to scratch an itch…..or sew a mini….. I saw this cute little quilt on eBay.

And decided to make my own in a slightly smaller size. The original is about 16 by 19 inches, according to the description.

I used vintage fabric scraps. The binding is wonky. But this quilt is pretty tiny so I’m going to let that slide.

It finished at a bit under 4 by 5 inches.

It is stiff as a board with the quilting, but it was fun.

More Bliss

I decided to keep moving with my original plan here. I pieced everything together into this large parallelogram.

Then I took a slice from top to bottom.

I moved the piece on the right to the left side.

Then pieced it back together. This gave me straight edges without any waste.

It also made for a long narrow crib quilt so I decided to add borders on the sides.

The greens above didn’t make the cut, but I found this old black floral in my stash that I think will work.

If all goes well, I should be able to share this finish on Friday. Have a good one!

Treasure

I mentioned that we were traveling last week. You know I always bring home treasure! These two beautiful jelly rolls were a gift from my sweet MIL. I already have an idea for the blue one.

Repro fat quarters in some of my favorite colors.

Some yardage that I found on sale.

I picked this up on clearance.

And the best one of all, was this sweet bag that my Sweet MIL made. She made a bag for all the girls that came to the reunion. The guys all got hats. She is a master at making bags of all sorts.

It has lots of pockets. Aren’t the dogs cute?

It even has pockets inside!

I wish all of you could meet her. I truly won the lottery when I married into this family. She has been a teacher, a mentor, and a dear friend to me and to pretty much everyone she has ever met. Here she is with Daughter #3 and SIL.
