Quilting Vines

I’m so happy to be quilting this! I have the perfect person in mind for this.

I thought I would share how I did the feathers. First, I stitched a line one quarter inch from the green/muslin seam. Then I drew a line a half inch from the outside edge. These provide guidelines. I don’t want the tips of my feathers to get lost in the binding. Then I use a wavy template to stitch the spine.

It’s been a while since I have done feathers. I did the inside feathers first a warm up. I figure the outer feathers would show mistakes more.

Then I went back and added the feathers on the other side. Good enough.

I wanted to echo quilt around the vines and leaves. It was harder than I thought and I ended up using templates.

It took forever. But the overall effect worked for me so it was worth it.

Looking forward to sharing this finish soon. Have a great day!

More About the Vines

The tumbler top is in timeout, and I’m working with the vines. When I initially made these, I had a strippie quilt in mind. But I never figured out what size, and I always thought I needed more strips. I’ve lost count how many tines I have pulled these out and put them away over the years.

I always thought I would put a solid blue with them, until I was working with the green solid I got from the estate sale. Here’s a closeup of the machine appliqué done on my 1955 Singer 201.

I probably should have added dozens more leaves, but they have a certain naïveté about them that I like.

I mentioned before that the appliqué made the strips wonky. It’s funny how something can sit half finished for years and suddenly, it must be finished now!

You might notice that the vintage fabric Ila sent me has ended up on the back of this. That floral looked so perfect with the green.

Time to plan my quilting. Have a great day!

Design Wall Monday

I have my tumbler top assembled. But when I stepped back to look at it, I started feeling like it should be bigger.

I don’t feel like cutting anymore for this, but I know I won’t be satisfied with it as is. It is in danger of heading back to the UFO pile. While pondering that, I pulled out this UFO.

This is decades old. All appliqué is done by top stitching. This has made the strips a bit wonky and wavy. But that green I used in the tumblers is inspiring me to finish this.

Stay tuned.

Slow Stitching Sunday

This is where I was the last time I shared this top with you.

And this is where it is today.

I have this little pile left.

Time to figure outa border. I asked for opinions on Instagram and have narrowed it down to one of these:

I’m so excited to have made this much progress!

Have a great day!

Finds

I’m my never ending rummaging, I found a few more things to finish. The first one is just a small piece.

This one is about 30 inches square. I pieced this ages ago.

I think one of my girls pieced these next two. I may finish them up for donation quilts.

I also found machine quilting samples galore. I’ve used them to make zipper bags in the past. I need to find other ways to use them.

Have a great day!

Finish It Up Friday ~ Batik Baby

On Monday, I showed you my newest leader/ender project. Well, that quickly became a main project and now it is done.

I’ve had this backing fabric in my stash for decades.

It’s actually bright pink.

The binding is navy and I used bright pink quilting thread.

This is the pantograph I used from Urban Elementz .

Willy looking confused as usual.

I’ll be sending this off to Quilts of Compassion. They are collecting quilts to take to families in Tennessee that lost their homes in the recent tornadoes.

Have a great weekend!

Diamond Chain

This is another beautiful quilt pieced by my friend, Donna. She used a Missouri Star tutorial.

She chose this panto and it is perfect!

Love the backing.

Donna hasn’t been quilting all that long, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at her quilts. Such beautiful work.

Have a great day!

Grrrrr…..

I can’t believe I did this. My friend, Donna asked me to quilt this lovely piece for her.

She chose the perfect panto for it!

I love how the quilting turned out.

This is the one I used from Urban Elementz .

When I pulled it off the frame and looked at the back, I saw this:

It’s a landscape print and I loaded it upside down! It should look like this.

Good thing my friend is a good sport about it. You can bet I will watch that more carefully next time!

Have a great day!

Hawaiian Memories

I bought a bunch of fabric when we visited Hawaii some years back. I made one quilt and then chopped up must of the rest into these rectangles.

I decided I needed to see what kind of distribution I had so I sorted them out.

Apparently, I added some Australian, African, and other fabrics into the mix. I’m not sure I have enough variety here. Hmmmm…

This one may have to percolate a bit longer.

Have a great day!
