Finish It Up Friday ~ Star Wars

Another fast finish! I had intended to give this to someone outside of the family, but Mr. Wonderful said it had to go to number one son. And so it did!

I used gray thread. I think black would have been better in the top, but the gray was better for the backing. This is the panto I used.

The backing is my favorite part!

I bought this piece of fabric at an outlet store for all of $1.99! It isn’t cotton, maybe microfiber?

Whatever it is, it was a perfect backing. And Big L and Little L loved it, I spite of the face being made. It was way past bedtime.

Have a great day!

I Spy…..

….another quilt in the making!

I used this die to cut all the pieces.

I had just enough of this older Moda Marble fabric for the background.

I sewed one background piece to each print. I had two of each print so as I pressed these, I put one of each print in each pile.

I worked with just one pile to make the first half of the rows. This helps to insure that none of the pairs end up too close together. Here are the first seven rows.

I didn’t lay anything out ahead of time, I just grabbed random pieces to sew together. I’m loving it so far!

Have a great day!

Leader/Ender Update

I’m quite pleased with my leader/ender blocks. I actually only make the four patches as leaders/enders. Every now and again, I piece them into blocks like this.

The more I make, the more fun it is to play!

I still have lots of pieces. I have no idea how big this will end up.

As I finish blocks, they go into a project box for safe keeping.

This is the layout I like best right now. That could change.

Have a great day M

May the Force Be with You!

I wanted to make a quilt for a boy, and what could be better than Star Wars?

It’s also a good way to clear these bits out of my stash. I cut everything using my Take Five from Accuquilt . It has an 8 1/2 inch square, three 4 1/2 inch squares, and a 4 1/2 by 8 1/2 inch rectangle on it.

I decided on the placement of the large squares and sewed those rows first.

Then I went back and decided on the placement of the small squares. It went together very quickly.

Time to get this on the frame! Have a great day!

Slow Stitching Sunday

I’m still hand quilting my vintage top, though work on that has slowed considerably of late.

When I first started, I kind of over did it and ended up with a sore wrist. I’m trying to pace myself better. Here is where things stand now.

Once I get all the way around the outside edge, I will be well over halfway done.

I love using muslin on the back! I hope to get this space filled in soon

Have a great day!

Finish It Up Saturday ~ Madder 2

I’m quite pleased with this little finish! It is a fraternal twin to the doll quilt I made for the Humble Quilts Doll Swap last month.

I used the same backing fabric too.

The crosshatch quilting seemed just the ticket.

This is how it looked after washing.

Jimmy seems to like it.

Have a great day!

Finish It Up Friday ~ Moda Love

I should call this the 24 Hour quilt! It was so fast. I started it at noon one day, and I had it quilted and bound by noon the next.

I used the other half of the Pottery Barn duvet cover on the back.

And the extra binding I made came in handy.

I kept the quilting simple.

This finished at 64 inches square. Have a great day!

Crosshatching on the Long Arm

I’m often asked how I do crosshatch quilting on the long arm. It isn’t hard, just time consuming. It does require a ruler base and a straight edge ruler designed for use with a long arm. A rotary cutting ruler should NOT be used. I start by making a grid quilting diagonally as far as I can comfortably. I usually start at the top left. When I’ve gone as far as I can, I take a 90 degree turn and head back to the upper right.

I zig zag back and forth across the top until I’m done. I found stop there, but if I want a tighter grid, I’ll go back and do the same thing only this time I’m adding lines in between.

I could do the right grid from the beginning, but I think this gives more even tension. Here is the first row done.

You can see here where I made my turns. Time to advance the quilt.

Now I’m repeating the process.

The only thing different is that I need to match up my corners with the quilting on the previous section. This can be a little tricky.

You can see here that I didn’t hit it exactly. Because it is a diagonal grid, your eye will read it as straight.

Here I have the first pass done and you can see that I will repeat it for the in between lines.

Time to bind!

Have a great day!

Madder #2

Remember my recent swap quilt? I had leftover pieces cut and they begged me to do something with them.

At first, I thought I’d make a similar quilt.

But maybe have dark triangles on the edges.

But then I thought, I’ve already done that. So I cut some more background squares and came up with this.

These are the Accuquilt dies I used. BTW, from now until midnight on April 29th, you can get free shipping on all orders over $35 with the code SHIP2ME.

And yes, even little quilts can go on the longarm.

Have a great day!
