Leader/Ender Update

Very little sewing has been happening this week. I’ve been focused on cleaning closets and getting rid of stuff. Not fun, but it feels good to see a bit of progress. Once again, I’m also very behind on responding to comments. I do read and appreciate each one!

A while back, I shared my new leader/ender project. I have made a little progress on that over the last few weeks.

I started throwing bits up on the design wall.

Then I decided to start sewing things together.

I was inspired by a Gee’s Bend quilt. Mine will be a bit less wonky. I have no idea how big it will end up.

This showed up this week.

Aaaahhhh! I love a new roll of batting!

Have a great day!

Finishe It Up Friday ~ A Lotta Triangles

I pieced this top last winter in Arizona and finally got it quilted. I’m quite pleased with how it turned out! It is my original design.

I freehanded the quilting and while it is simple, it feels just right for this top.

The binding fabric is leftover from the backing.

I bought a lovely cotton duvet cover just because I loved the fabric! It is fine cotton and feels lovely.

The fabrics are from Lotta Jansdottir. I wish had lots more of each! This quilt finished at 56 by 71 inches, a great size for a cozy nap on a rainy day. I have not washed it.

This quilt has no destination yet, I’m toying with the idea of offering it for sale. I will never stop quilting, but I am running out of room!

Have a great day!

More Scrap Busting

I found a bag of vintage scraps in my closet. It was time to deal with these.

They were pretty small so I grabbed these dies.

I ironed scraps and piled them up on the dies.

Ta daaaa! Actually, there were many more piles like this, but I forgot to take a photo before I put them all away.

I always feel like I’m saving for a rainy day when I do this. 😁

BTW, I’m working on the next round of my VGS (virtual garage sale). I hope to be ready to post next Monday or Tuesday.

Have a great day!

Quilts of Valor

Here are the last two QOVs for this month. Here is another big one!

Here is the pattern info.

And the pantograph.

This top was lovely.

Here is the pattern info.

And the pantograph.

I thought this one would be simple and quick. Um, no. I had thread break after thread break. I changed needles three times. I changed to a new cone of thread, I rethreading multiple times. I had to go very slowly. It’s possible that this white on white fabric was the culprit. All my thread breaks were on this. I remember having this same issue with a fabric like this before.

Mama said there would be days like this…. I think it looks great now that it’s finally finished.

Have a great day!

Quilts of Valor

I finished a few more Quilts of Valor. I used a panto called Any Which Way on this first one. No pattern info.

This was a big one!

Here is the pattern info:

And the pantograph used.

I used a pantograph called Twister in this one. No pattern info, but it appears to be a Snail Trail block.

Have a great day!

Quilts of Valor

It’s QOV week again! No pattern info on the first two quilts. The panto I used for the first one is called Scalloped Grass. Turn it upside down and I think it looks like bunting!

The panto I used for this next one is called Modern Wave 3.

Kathy included pattern info on this one.

Thanks, Kathy!

Here is the pantograph I used.

Have a great day!

Pomegranates

I picked up this book at a garage sale a while back. I love every quilt in it!

Since I am caught up on the applique blocks for my BOM, I decided to try this. Looks easy enough.

Until you see that the blocks finish at a mere four inches! Yikes! I decided to upsize mine to 8 inch blocks.

I think I’ll use Kona snow for the background. Wish me luck.

More Scrap Busting!

I’ve finished cutting up my patriotic fabrics! After I cut all the 3.5 by 6.5 rectangle that I could, I started cutting 3.5 inch squares. I do have some yardage for borders and such that survived whole.

After I couldn’t cut anymore of those, I moved on to 2.5 inch squares.

These are the Accuquilt dies I used. These are for my studio cutter, but they have GO! Dies available in these sizes as well.

It takes a while to do this when you have to iron wrinkled scraps as you go, but not even close to the length of time it would take if I were using a rotary cutter and ruler. I just lay my pieces on top of my die and run it through.

It’s so easy and the best part is, I USE these pieces! I have enough pieces now cut for at least 5-6 Quilts of Valor. They are all ready to go when I need some mindless piecing. I can make four patches, nine patches, stripy quilts, fence rail blocks etc.

Back to work. Have a great day!

Finish It Up Friday ~ Amelia Brown’s Rooster Medallion

In my last update, I was quite unhappy with my quilting, but I’d found inspiration from vintage Welsh quilts. That caused me to add some echos to my rather spare looking pumpkin seeds. I also decided to ignore the piecing in the large half square triangle border and try my hand at a Welsh inspired border.

The center got a simple crosshatch.

I didn’t take full photos before washing. The blue marking pen I used was very distracting and I couldn’t wait to get it washed out. Here is a closeup of the Welsh style border after washing. Honestly, the quilting hardly shows.

I learned so much making this quilt! And I love it. Even if the quilting hardly shows and it took forever.

As a reminder, this is the original quilt that inspired my version.

Mine is much smaller, only 54 inches square. I used a toile I had in my stash for the back.

You can search the tag #ameliabrownsroostermedallionquilt on Instagram to see more versions of this.

Have a great day!

A New Old Top!

I opened my mailbox this week to the most delightful surprise!

My dear friend, Zenia, was given this quilt top along with some others. She sent me pics of it asking for quilting ideas and I immediately fell in love and began plotting to make my own.

Before I started cutting, she gifted this to me. How sweet is that? She is the kindest, most caring friend.

I love this little patch.

It’s a tough one to photograph, the colors seem to glow! This last photo is the truest in terms of color.

This top has shot to the top of my To Be Hand Quilted list! I feel so lucky!

Have a great day!
