Design Wall Monday

I got a new AccuQuilt die in the mail! Of course, I had to play with it. 😁

I really like how they screen printed the letters on the die.

Remember this?

I can’t leave these kits behind when I see them for sale cheap. Even though I know they are not accurately cut. Enter this die!

I knew I could use this die to make little Lemoyne Stars.

You gotta love how these bits match up!

With this method, there are no set in pieces. However, you do have to make half your pieces in mirror image as shown below.

It didn’t take long at all to get this far.

This next photo shows how I pressed. I would pin next time, as you can see, I didn’t get my center intersection quite on.

I’m still quite happy with this first little star. It will finish at 5 1/4 inches. That’s a bit of an odd size, but quite perfect for me. I was able to trim down the diamonds with very little waste and use a die intended for a totally different block.

I’m not sure where this project is headed yet, but I’m thrilled to know I WILL be able to use these pieces.

Lastly, there will be a fun AccuQuilt Live tomorrow, complete with prize drawings. Click here to register.

Have a great day!

Slow Stitching Sunday

Finally! I got some prep work done for one of my Ladies Aid BOM blocks.

I’m way behind on this, but determined to get caught up.

Have an amazing day!

More Chisels

I pulled out the chisel pieces I had cut with my AccuQuilt Studio Cutter.

These are the dies I used.

After playing around a bit, I decided on this design.

Doesn’t it look like doorways? I’m hoping I have enough pieces for a baby quilt.

Time to sew. Have a great day!

Finish It Up Friday ~ Puss in the Corner

It’s done! The quilting seemed to take forever, but I’m thankful to share a finished quilt with you today, instead of a finished top.

Of course, my little photo bomber showed up.

I love this stripe I used for the binding.

I used muslin on the back. I found it at Goodwill and it was two lengths already seamed together to the perfect size.

I knew the crosshatch quilting would give a fantastic texture after washing. And I was right!

How yummy is that?

All the quilting imperfections are darn near invisible now.

I was so worried that the blocks were too chunky, but I love the result. Eventually, I’ll use this for a couch quilt. But it’s decorating my railing for now so I can look up and admire it.

Thanks for following along with this project.

Have a great day!

3D Effects

I’ve been messing around with my AccuQuilt chisel die and I’ve found that you can create some really cool 3D effects with it.

Doesn’t that look like the corners of buildings jutting out? This is what the die looks like.

It is included in the AccuQuilt 6” Qube Companion Corner set. It is used with the triangle die, shape 5, from the 6” Qube.

This is a directional die, so if you are working with fabric that has a “right” side, you’ll need to pay attention . If you want all your pieces the same, you’ll need to place them on the die all with right sides up, or right sides down, depending on what direction you need. you also need to pay attention when sewing. For the blocks I played with, I wanted one going in each direction. Obviously, solids are the same on both sides, so they are good for playing with.

This is how I pressed my seams so that they nest.

As I mentioned, with solids, it doesn’t matter which way they are cut, but the piecing does matter. Here are some of my play time ideas.

These end up as 3” blocks. In the photo below, I added some 3” plain squares in between. I’m not sure what, if anything, I will do with these. They were a great size for playing at the design wall.

I have a 3” by 6” chisel die as well for my AccuQuilt studio cutter. I cut a bunch of pieces out of red, white, and blue solids when I was back in Michigan. I need to pull those out and play some more.

Have a great day!

Strings and Things

I played around some more with these string slabs.

I used my 3 1/2 by 6 1/2 inch die to cut as many rectangles as I could out of these pieces.

When I had cut all I could, I took the scraps and more strips and made more slabs to cut more rectangles. Until this is all I had left.

Time to play a little.

I’m sure there are many more possibilities. I’ll look for a solid to go with these bits. Then I’ll probably play some more.

Have a great day!

Puss in the Corner Progress

I got my top pieced and loaded on the frame!

I decided to quilt with my very imprecise cross hatch. I quilted lines all in one direction, then took it off the frame and loaded it the other way. I’m in the process of doing all the lines that way now.

Harry 2 is working out really well, especially since I received an order of my favorite thread.

I gotta say, I sure love the view from my sewing room and being able to sew with the windows open is amazing!

Looks like I’ll get to enjoy this all week.

Have a great day!

Design Wall Monday

I decided to move ahead with my Puss in the Corner blocks.

I really love this yellow fabric for the alternating blocks.

I wasn’t sure I’d have enough, so I considered using something else around the edges.

I’ve done this before and I like the faux border effect. In the end, I had just enough yellow with a strip about 1 1/2 inches wide left over.

Time to start sewing these into rows! Have a great day!

No Slow Stitching Sunday

I do not know why, but I don’t seem to get any hand stitching done out here. I have plenty of handwork I could do, I just haven’t done any.

Maybe it’s because every time I sit down, I have 1-4 dogs in my lap.

I mentioned the loss of my sewjo, I turned to the scrap bins looking for inspiration yesterday. Specifically, this bin of strings.

I don’t know where this is headed, but the mindless piecing was enjoyable.

I have spent much of the past week working with EQ8 and Inkscape, learning to write patterns.

I rarely use patterns myself, so it’s been quite the learning curve! I’m toying with the idea of offering a few downloadable patterns here on the blog.

I hope you all have a wonderful Sunday!

Yet another sewing room post…

What can I say? This room is continually evolving. I really do think it’s done for the near future though.

I mentioned before that I didn’t like the mismatched, messy look. I found a matched set of wire basket units on a local sale site and snapped them up! I purchased some tops from IKEA. Now I’m happy with my fabric storage!

I turned around and sold the mismatched pieces and nearly covered the cost of this. I like that I have a work top to use when pulling fabrics.

I also found this piece at Goodwill.

It’s a classroom storage unit. I’m using it for my scraps. They are sorted into size and shape.

So here is a round the room tour. The fabric storage is behind the long arm.

I recently sold my old Bernina 1030, because I found this barely used 1090 for a bargain. It still had the original needle packet with it. And it fit perfectly in the cabinet I had the 1030 in.

I’ve felt a bit creatively stuck recently. I’ve had some deadlines that are now mostly met. I’m hoping some serious inspiration hits soon.

Have a great day!
