June Goals Revisited and Looking Ahead to July

My biggest goal, really my only goal, for June was to get my sewing room back together. And I sure did with lots of hard work and help from Mr. Wonderful. You can see my sewing room post here. I did actually finish a few sewing projects as well. First this little Liberty Hexagon piece that had been lying around for ages was finished and sent off to a bloggy friend.

I finished three mug rugs:

That last one really did get done but apparently, I forgot to take a picture of it.

I made the monthly challenge quilt for the Small Quilt Talk Group.

Finished this one too and I was sure I had a finished picture! My mind must be going.

I finished a little quilt for the HSTeria Quilt A Long hosted by Vicki at Field Trips in Fiber.

I quilted my first customer quilt for my friend:

And I finished my Denyse Schmidt Hexie quilt. Still no pictures of that finished, but here is a peek:

July is shaping up to be busy already! First family coming to visit and then a trip to Missouri to visit more family. So I will keep my goals reasonable.

1. I want to complete the SQT challenge quilt for July.

2. I want to finish the rainbow strip quilt.

20140624-063922-23962165.jpg

3. I want to finish the pink/green UFO. I don’t even know the name of the block anymore!

20140625-064356-24236976.jpg

4. I would like to get the Churn Dash blocks together and quilted.

20140616-082457-30297727.jpg

That’s probably enough!

I will be busy with family this week so I probably will not respond to all comments like I like to do. I do always appreciate everyone stopping by and leaving some love :).

Do you IG?

Instagram has gotten huge over the last few years. I started using it because one of my kids was not on Face Book and it was a way to further keep in touch. I enjoy seeing snap shots of my kids’ days. Occasionally I posted quilt pictures but not often. Eventually I made my profile private since it was pretty much all stuff I only wanted to share with my family.

20140701-061412-22452973.jpg
Daughter #2 suggested I start another account just for quilting. And so I have! If you are interested in following me on Instagram, you can look for me there as katyquilts. You can also check out the people I follow there. I so enjoy seeing glimpses of the works in progress of so many creative souls!

I finished my hexie quilt binding late last night. Just under the wire for my Quarter 2 FAL goal! It was too late for pictures so I will share that finish later this week.

I hand appliquéd one leaf/pumpkin seed last night before I fell into bed.

20140701-062108-22868323.jpg
Did I mention before that I am not a big fan of appliqué? Love how it looks, but actually doing it……hmmmmm. Anyway, I am going to trudge along and prepare a few more blocks be fore I make a final decision on these.

Daughter #2 and her SO arrive today and will be staying until Saturday. I can’t wait to see her!

Design Wall Monday

Not exactly on the wall but still designing…on the frame, I am working out quilting designs for this:

20140630-072721-26841999.jpg
And on the table, I am working on this:

20140630-072755-26875684.jpg
We have a road trip coming up and I will bring my hexies but I wanted something else for a change of pace.

I cut the muslin squares at 4.5″. I am going to try one today before I go too crazy cutting!

Slow Stitching Sunday

I finished quilting my DS hexie quilt and hope to finish the hand sewing in the binding today.

20140629-074234-27754601.jpg
I ended up going with the medium blue print and I am really happy with it. I do appreciate all of your input. It was interesting to read different perspectives on it!

20140629-074348-27828473.jpg
I quilted this with a panto from Urban Elementz called Dizzy Izzy. It made me a little crazy!

20140629-074438-27878795.jpg
This was the most difficult panto I have ever done. It was critical to be accurate in order to have even spacing. My accuracy is definitely lacking! Hopefully, when it is all washed, it will be less noticeable. I do love the texture it gives.

20140629-074639-27999962.jpg
I didn’t pay a lot of attention when I ordered this and it is really too wide for my 18″ machine. By the time I had done 4 rows, I was out of room. The 5th row was only a half row (I loaded the top sideways) and if it hadn’t been, I wouldn’t have been able to quilt the whole width of the row.

I have been busy cleaning and finishing up little projects around the house before Daughter #2 comes home on Tuesday. I can’t wait!

Finish it up Friday

Remember the quilt my friend asked me to quilt? I finished it on Monday after she left. I have taken it back to her so now I can show you the whole thing.

20140626-222726-80846316.jpg
I love how it turned out and it will look even better bound and washed!

20140626-222812-80892740.jpg

20140626-222818-80898497.jpg

20140626-222810-80890820.jpg

20140626-222809-80889176.jpg
This was my very first “customer” quilt and I am very happy with it! My friend did a lovely job piecing it!

In other news, I took the borders off the hexie quilt. I appreciate all the comments. After much consideration, I decided it wasn’t that bad but it competed too much with the center. I wanted the hexies to be the first thing you noticed. Rather than rip stitches, I just cut the borders off and then trimmed the seams from the borders so they were ready for another project.

20140626-223305-81185584.jpg
There is some fabric waste but it’s better than spending a few hours with my seam ripper. Here are the two options I considered for the new borders.

20140626-223452-81292331.jpg

20140626-223453-81293898.jpg
Much better than this:

20140626-223529-81329349.jpg
Now onto quilting but that won’t be finished until I clean some carpets.

Reverse Progress

I felt so productive yesterday morning. I got some housework done and the borders on my DS hexie quilt. Last night, I decided I need to take those borders off.

20140626-054755-20875499.jpg
Love this fabric, not so much as a border for this quilt.

20140626-054849-20929859.jpg
Way too bright and overpowering. Sigh…..

I was so hoping to start quilting it this afternoon. Instead I will be removing this border and putting on something else. I have the backing and batting loaded on the frame. Maybe that will motivate me to forge ahead.

WIP Wednesday

While trying to decide how to quilt the rainbow strip quilt, I pulled out another item from my FAL 2014 list.

20140625-064356-24236976.jpg

20140625-064413-24253324.jpg
I cannot remember for sure how long ago I made these blocks but it had to be at least 15 years. They are not as well pieced as I remembered either! I do think they deserve to be finished though. I was just going to use muslin for the setting triangles but can’t find an exact match in my stash. So I started considering some other options.

20140625-064701-24421374.jpg

20140625-064659-24419936.jpg
Hmmm….. Not sure yet what to do. I would like to get this top finished this week. Not sure how to quilt this either.

I am getting a clearer idea of how to finish another item off my FAL list, my DS hexie top.

20140625-065129-24689667.jpg
Since I know where I want to go with this, I may switch gears and go back to this project.

A little quilting and a little piecing…

I had a wonderful morning yesterday having coffee and a catch-up with a friend. I got to see her current quilty projects and stitch a bit on my hexie quilt. She even left me a quilt top she made for a soon to arrive grand baby to quilt. I spent the afternoon quilting it and love how it turned out. Here is a sneak peak:

20140624-063736-23856968.jpg
Last night I got my rainbow strip quilt top together. Sorry for the terrible picture. I need to work on a photography set up in my new space.

One week from today, Daughter #2 will be home for a visit. I can’t wait! I have lots if housework to get caught up on in the mean time. Let’s see how much I can get done before work today!

Design Wall Monday

Wow! This weekend flew by! I spent a bit of time playing with the strips I pieced last week. First I tried this:

20140623-085617-32177140.jpg
Nope. I might okay with this idea more but the strip sets need to be much closer together. I also tried this:

20140623-085715-32235524.jpg
Not much different than what I showed last week but I am liking this. I hope to play a bit more with this today.

I also practiced a bit more with my long arm.

A New Project and Some Practice

Yesterday I made a few receiving blankets for Baby E as the ones he received as shower gifts were too small! Last night I had time to work on my own projects and felt a bit stymied as to what to work on. My sewing room is almost too clean! I spied a rainbow of fabrics I had dyed a couple years ago and went to work.

20140621-092158-33718397.jpg
Not sure where this is going yet. It sure is bright!

I also loaded some fabric onto the frame for some quilting practice. I feel so rusty after 6 weeks of not quilting.

I was feeling more comfortable by the time I got to this. And then this happened:

20140621-092555-33955921.jpg
I love Glide thread and it is sad to finish a cone of it! Glad I had its replacement in stand by.

One of the little projects I was really happy about in my new sewing room, was the solution for dealing with the long arm cords. I hate having cords out when they are not being used. I always unplug my long arm. So this is what I did:

20140621-092845-34125832.jpg
See the surge suppressor cord coming
out of the cabinet? It actually plugs in here:
