Treasure!

Mr. Wonderful took a day off a few weeks ago just so we could hang out together. He found a garage sale advertising quilt stuff. So after breakfast, we went to check it out.

I was NOT disappointed! Although I felt badly for the lady selling. Her arthritis had gotten so bad, she couldn’t quilt anymore. She was so nice. Anyway, this is what I brought home.

That’s what nearly 100 yards of fabric looks like! It was all great quilt shop quality stuff. There are four kits for Quilts of Valor in there. I probably won’t make the quilts as patterned, but all that lovely fabric will get turned into quilts for our service men and women. I’ll pass the patterns on to my Stitching Sisters group.

I hope you have a wonderful day!

Finish It Up Friday ~ Baby Tumbler

I love making tumbler quilts! My tumbler dies from Accuquilt are some of my favorites.

I used this Denyse Schmidt print from my stash for the backing.

I used the new old Pfaff for the binding.

I’m not sure why my photos are so dark. The background pieces are a true white.

Now I have one boy quilt and one girl quilt in my stash.

Have a great day!

TBThursday ~ 1930s Repro Quilts Part 2

Here are some more of my repro 30s quilts. Actually, this first one is made from all vintage fabrics. I was new to machine quilting and wish I had done that differently. The blocks are 5 inches.

This one was hand pieced and quilted. My hand quilting used to be so much nicer before I ruined my hands.

This one was also done with vintage scraps. The hexies have half inch edges.

My foray into yo-yos was limited.

Have a great day!

Cowboy Quilt

A few years back, Mr. Wonderful bought a box full of FQs from Missouri Star. It was an interesting mix that has been very useful to dip into from time to time. This cowboy fabric was in the lot.

Isn’t that fun? As I was sorting things in the sewing room, I thought this might make a cute little boy quilt. So I pulled some other bits to go along with this.

I realized while doing this how often I use collections together instead of just pulling from across my stash for a quilt. It was fun! Anyway, I used my 5 inch square die from Accuquilt to chop these up.

That didn’t take long at all and then I headed to the design wall.

When I make a quilt like this, I start at the bottom stacking the squares in each row from left to right. The square on the left will be on top of the pile and the one on the right on the bottom. Then I put a pin through the stack at the top.

When I’m all done, the top row of the quilt is on top. My stacks stay in order and right side up. I do it the same way every time so it has become habit. Now the design wall is free for something else and these are ready to head to the machine.

Have a great day!

July/August Goals

I kept my July goals short and sweet.

1. I wanted to finish my Puss in the Corner quilt. Done!

2. I wanted to decide on a plan for the tie challenge. Sort of done. I’ve started anyway!

What else did I do?

I made a small doll quilt from a vintage block.

And a bed to display it on.

I finished the tumbler baby quilt and will share that finish soon.

I also finished my little Jeep quilt.

And another small quilt from vintage fabrics.

On to August! I hope to get back to the long arm this month. Time will tell on that.

1. I would like to get the cutting done for a Snow Ball quilt.

2. I’d like to get started on a bed quilt for Daughter #3 and SIL.

3. I’d like to finish my tie challenge piece.

4. I want to finish my QOV blocks and get them into a top.

We shall see what actually happens! Have a great day!

A New QOV

A while back, I started cutting pieces for a new Quilt of Valor. This is the block pattern I wanted to use.

I got stuck when I realized I didn’t have enough matching fabric for the large quarter square triangles that I needed. So I set it aside.

These are the dies I used from Accuquilt .

I also used a 4 1/2 inch HST dies, but I forgot to take a picture. I started with a layer cake so the above die essentially cut the layer cake squares into four equal parts. I got the background fabric I needed and got back to it.

I should tell you that my triangles were over sized and I trimmed the blocks down to 13 1/2 inches. I have some more blocks that I have worked on, but I won’t get any farther with these until I can trim with my rotary cutter again. This is what they look like before trimming.

Have a great day!

Vintage Quilts

I love finding quilts in antique shops, even if very few follow me home. Here are a few I’ve seen recently. I sure love this bright yellow sashing!

The hand quilting on this was beautiful.

This one had the tiniest diamonds. It was in need of a really good soak.

I’ve never seen this block pattern before. It has the same kind of running stitch appliqué that I used on my Vintage Daisy quilt . This is the kind of simple appliqué I might be able to do! I would like to make a quilt with this block some time.

I don’t know the age of this next quilt. It was beautiful, but at a price tag near $600, I wasn’t about to unfold it. It is most certainly over a hundred years old, maybe even civil war vintage. The hand quilting was beautifully done, but not near as close as I would have expected given the age of the top. The rows were a good inch apart, not close enough for unbounded cotton batting to hold together in the wash.

Perhaps it was finished at a later date, I couldn’t tell. I guess only the quilt knows.

Have a great day!

Remember This?

I made this Quilt of Valor for Daughter #2’s significant other. I got this free pattern for the eagle from someone on Facebook, but I don’t remember the details now. I designed the rest.

Anyway, a while back, Diane asked if she could use my design to make a QOV for her grand daughter’s special guy. I was delighted to share with her! And just look at her finished quilt!

Isn’t it just gorgeous? I love her version. Thanks for sharing it with me, Diane.

Have a great day!

Finish It Up Friday ~ Puss in the Corner Quilt

I finally finished this earlier this month. If that headboard were a different color, this quilt would look perfect in this room!

The center was all quilted free hand. My continuous curve quilting is not very good, but once it is all done, it looks fine.

Yo can see on the back how uneven it is.

I used a wide muslin on the back.

I used a swag template to quilt the border.

This quilt is huge.

I might have to think about repainting that headboard.

Have a great day

TBThursday ~ 1930s Repro Quilts Part 1

When the first 30s retro prints came out, I immediately fell in love with them. And I made lots of quilts from them! Since I haven’t been sewing as much, I thought I’d share a few. I soon realized I had enough for several posts! This first little quilt was one of my first attempts at hand appliqué. I found some vintage fabric swatches and reduced Sue to a size that would work with the swatches.

Sue ended up being just over 3 inches tall.

Mr. Wonderful bought me a little FQ bundle of the first Aunt Grace line and I remember feeling like I had won the lottery! I hand pieced, quilted, and appliqué this little quilt from them.

Then came this little quilt pieced while waiting for Daughter #1 at her dance lessons. She was four and now has three babies of her own.

I can’t take a lot of credit for this one. I bought a vintage block on eBay, added borders and quilted it.

This is about 30 inches square, so more f a crib quilt. I purchased the vintage blocks from a friend, added the sashing and corner stones and hand quilted it.

Next Thursday, I’ll share a few more from the archives. Have a lovely day!
