Quilts of Valor!

Thanks to Covid, our Stitching Sisters QOV group has been unable to meet. But our toppers have remained busy! This top was made by Nadine.

Here’s the back.

And this is the pantograph I used.

Nadine sent along this info regarding the pattern.

I’m so glad to be quilting these again! Have a great day!

Finish It Up Friday ~ A Scrappy Gift

My finish this week was a surprise even to me! Tuesday when I checked my mail, I found a lovely little quilt top from a sweet, generous Instagram friend.

As you can see, I didn’t waste any time getting this basted for hand quilting!

I really enjoyed hand quilting this so I could take my time studying each lovely little scrap.

I just love this!

I had saved this piece of fabric for a long time. It was perfect for the backing of this little beauty.

I’m so thankful for all of the wonderful people that I have met online.

Have a great weekend!

Pin Cushions Part 2

I ripped and trimmed and ended up with two pincushions.

I quilted both the front and back of each.

They measure about 4 by 6 inches, a much better size.

I am all about using what I have on hand so I filled these with rice.

Have a great day!

Pin Drop Pin Cushion

I’m using this fabric kind for my secret sewing project. I never save selvedges, but it felt appropriate to make these into a pin cushion.

I slid my pieces back and forth until I was happy and then sliced off the extra.

I used scraps of the actual fabric and used a scrap of white for a foundation.

I used this thread because it was handy.

Then I just top stitched each piece down.

When I got to the end, I flipped and sewed another pink piece.

Now, wait a minute……now it seems way to big for a pin cushion!

So that’s epic fail for you! Hmmmm….to be continued…..I think…..maybe….

Have a great day!

Camping

Last Thursday night, the mister and I decided to go camping on Friday. Friday morning, we decided to take E1 and E2 with us. Nothing like planning ahead, right?

We found a campground with these cute little sleeping cabins. We took the boys offroad on one of my favorites trails. It was their first time wheeling.

Their reactions were hilarious!

E1: Yee haw! (Over and over)

E2: Please, Nana, don’t t turn the Jeep upstairs down!

Mr. Wonderful did all of the cooking.

We spent sone time at the beach on Lake Michigan. Daughter #3 and Son in Law met us there, making it even more fun!

I think we wore them out. I know I could sleep for a week! But first, I need to clean up the mess.

Have a great day!

Something New

Here are a few more Walmart deals I picked up to play with.

I came up with a block idea and I used these dies .

I used a jelly roll strip to cut the squares and a matching charm square for the center of the block.

I cut triangles out of a light gray I had on hand.

I trimmed the block to 7 inches when I finished.

I rather like this small block. I think this could make a nice baby quilt.

Have a great day!

Slow Stitching Sunday

I’m still working on my GFG quilt. Jeana Kimball issued a 50 Days of Hand Quilting challenge on Instagram and I decided to jump in. My goal is to complete one flower and the surrounding green bits each day.

So far, I’m keeping up. There are 86 total, so I’m hoping getting 50 done will give me enough momentum to finish this year. Here is the back.

I’ve been using a hoop rather than my floor frame since I do so much turning. I’m loving how this looks!

Happy stitching!

This and That

I layered s few more quilts on the guest room bed. I love this room.

You may remember that we took E1 along on our trip this summer. That meant E2 needed a turn. He wanted to sleep in the Jeep so we set up camp in the backyard.

I planned out crafts and activities so we could have summer camp at home. His favorite part was sleeping in the Jeep though!

I can really relate to this:

Winslow is waiting on a haircut.

The mister has been working on redoing the garage. We had fun picking out signs to hang!

This one is my favorite. It was part of a shelf in my grandfather’s garage. It was totally rusted out, but the mister was able to save this much.

Now to decide where this one goes. Have a great day!

Finish It Up Friday ~ Finally!

It’s done!

I used a pantograph called Fern Meander to quilt it.

I had wide backing, but it wasn’t wide enough. So I inserted this brown and pink strip.

The green vine worked a treat for the binding.

The problem with making s gigantic quilt like this, is trying to find a place to take photos of it! These were taken at a local park.

Stats: 875 4 inch finished tumblers

Finished size: 107 by 108 inches

Started piecing: July 27

Last stitch: August 18

Have a great day!

9 Patches from a Charm Pack

I’m working on some secret sewing that I can’t share, so I decided I’d share an older tutorial for Throwback Thursday. I first shared this over six years ago so it should be new to many of you.

I picked up this charm pack at the Missouri Star Quilt Company.

IMG_0537.JPG
I was trying to come up with a handwork project to make with it but this stubborn charm pack wanted to become a small 9 patch quilt. Who am I to argue?

I used my 1 1/2″ strip die for my Accuquilt studio cutter. I thought I would show you how since I know some of my readers have die cutters too.

First, I paired up charm squares right sides together. I laid them on top of my strip cutter so that three strips were cut from each.

IMG_0912.JPG
You can see there is very little waste but this does get rid of those pesky pinked edges.

Next, I sewed the strips together, alternating light and dark in each pair.

IMG_0913.JPG
I always press to the dark side with these. Then I layer the two sets. Since I pressed to the dark fabric in each set, the seams automatically nest.

IMG_0914.JPG
Now it is time to lay those strip sets back on the die with seams perpendicular to the blades.

IMG_0915.JPG

IMG_0916.JPG
Time to sew the 9 patches together! The first seams are really quick because they come off the die ready to feed through the machine.

IMG_0917.JPG
You get two 9 patches from each pair of charm squares with this method.

IMG_0918.JPG
Here is a peak at the back to see how I press my seams.

IMG_0925.JPG
You get 42 three inch finished blocks from a charm pack with almost no waste and no scraps left over.

IMG_0938.JPG
This same method could be used with layer cakes and larger strip dies.

I really do love my Accuquilt cutter and dies and I love finding new ways to use them. Right now, they are offering 20% off on GO! and GO! Big cutters. There are also some great clearance deals. Details can be found by clicking on my affiliate links above. If you purchase through my links, you don’t pay any extra, but I receive a small commission to help offset the cost of the blog.

Have a great day!
