Slow Stitching Sunday

I got my little top together and basted it for hand quilting. I do not recommend basting with straight pins, but I failed to bring any safety pins and couldn’t be bothered to go buy any.

So I started by quilting straight lines through the blocks with pins so I could remove them ASAP. Now I’m adding more quilting.

I’m not sure you can see it here on the back, but I’m quilting a hanging diamonds pattern.

Next up will be scrounging up some binding. Have a great day!

Another Small Project

I saw the neatest little quilt on Instagram. I contacted the maker to ask permission to make my own and she graciously agreed. She had an old crazy quilt top that was not able to be saved, but it did have some good spots.

So she cut bits from the good areas to make a mini. I had some vintage blocks like this that were riddled with a bleeder fabric. I knew this was a perfect project for them.

I’m loving it so far! Have a great day!

Finish It Up Friday ~ Strippy

No, I’m not back in Michigan, but I did a lot of sewing when I was home and wrote posts that I could schedule later. Thankfully, there isn’t snow like this here in Arizona!

I love the design of this quilt. I’m not as in love with the quilting. I don’t think it fits with the vintage style.

You can see that I did add my pink binding and it pleases me to no end!

The backing is an ancient white on white piece I had in my stash.

Snow….yuck!

I knew washing would help and it did. A look at the back reveals that part of the problem was not keeping the quilting density the same across the quilt.

I’m much happier with the front of the quilt.

I don’t think I’m done with strippy quilts yet. Have a great day!

Improv Curves Finish

No masterpiece here, but it was a fun experiment! I played around with the bits I made for a long time.

I decided I liked the pieces backing up to each other to make arches or doorways of sorts.

And this is what I finally ended up with. I don’t hate it. I don’t love it either.

I think what I don’t like here, is that I didn’t do enough editing. I used most every thing I made and it seems too busy. I learn with every project. I’ll leave this up on the wall to see what else I can learn from it.

I have a pile of these scraps left on my table. What shall I try next?

Have a great day!

Improv Curves Part 2

Still playing with these curves.

And I’m still not sure where I’m going. I added double curves on a few blocks.

This is how I did it. Layer blocks right sides up.

Freehand cut a curve.

Flip and stitch.

I’m not in love with this yet. But I am getting better at cutting and sewing the curves.

Here’s a tip if you try this. If you sew your curve and it doesn’t look smooth, don’t rip!

Just sew again making it smoother. The first line of stitching will act like basting.

Have a great day!

Improv Curves

I’m continuing to play with the hand dyes I had out from my previous project. I want to get more comfortable with sewing curves.

I thought I’d try cutting up my junk strips. I just layer two pieces and freehand cut a curve.

Then switch the top and bottom pieces.

I use a smaller than quarter inch seam allowance.

Things never come out even with this method, but that’s okay.

It remains to be seen what this will become. But it’s fun!

Have a great day!

A Little Inspiration Part 2

Did you see this coming? I love strippy quilts.

When I was a kid, I was told that red and pink don’t match, they clash. I didn’t understand that. Tan was a lighter shade of brown and they went together. Light and dark blues went together. Wasn’t pink just a lighter shade of red?

And so I’ve included pink pieces in with my red. So there, fashion police!

The quilting is a make it up as you go process. But the binding will definitely be pink.

Have a great day!

A Little Inspiration

I have a series of posts this week on a project I completed when I was back in Michigan. I took photos and wrote posts, and then forgot to publish! So here you go.

I was inspired by this pile of fabrics on my cutting table and started cutting.

These are the dies I used. Oops! That bottom one is a square that measures 3″ finished on point.

Can you tell where I’m headed here?

Progress!

Stay tuned for part 2! Have a great day!

Ta Daaaa! Improv Finish

I finished this little top. It isn’t a masterpiece, but it sparked further ideas, so I’m calling it a success.

And yes, I did inset that dark green corner. Not a perfect job, but needs must. And here is a look at my messy back.

It will get another good press, maybe with a hammer, before quilting.

Have a great day!
