Slow Stitching Sunday

I finished piecing my little doll quilt replica. Now I’m hand quilting.

The quilting lines end up being about 1 1/4 inches apart. I normally like my hand quilting closer than that. But I’ll finish this cross hatching and then decide if it needs more. I pulled a very old bit from my stash for the backing.

Have a great day!

This and That

How cool are these Jeep panels? They are 36 by 44 inches. I’m planning to make a Jeep quilt for E3 for his birthday which is coming up. He just loved to a big boy bed. I couldn’t decide which one to get, so I ordered both.

I had heard about this out of print book and got it from my library. Lots of inspiration here.

The mister and I saw this beautiful rainbow on our walk the other night.

E1 had a birthday last week!

Willy thinks Winslow makes an excellent pillow.

Have a great day!

Finish It Up Friday ~ Snowballs

Remember this? I pieced this top last winter in Arizona.

I found a backing and quilted it up this week. Here is the pantograph I used.

I’d forgotten how much I like this one. Here’s a look at the backing. It’s a vintage sheet that was still in it’s original packaging.

I’m not sure where this one will end up. They usually tell me eventually where they want to go.

Have a great day!

Me? Appliqué?

I know, I know….I’m not good friends with that A word…. but I decided to give applique in my embroidery machine a try.

Did you know that Accuquilt has free embroidery files to go along with their applique dies? I didn’t! You can download them from their site. Of course, you don’t need them to applique, you can always use a regular satin or buttonhole stitch on your regular machine. But since I have an embroidery machine that sees too little action, I had to try it. This is what the die looks like. This one just has the dog and his little ear. I figured I should start simple.

Here is the machine hubby got me a few years ago. It intimidates me a bit. Okay, maybe more than a bit.

I won’t give any detailed embroidery info here. Every machine is different and I am a real rookie. But I downloaded the embroidery files, hooped my fabric with stabilizer, and loaded it up. The first step is having the machine stitch out this outline.

That gives me the placement for the dog body applique. I had already put fusible on the back of my fabric and used the die to cut the shapes. Put fusible on your fabric BEFORE cutting the shape with your die.

Then it goes back into the machine which stitches the applique down.

Now to stitch out the ear placement outline.

Put the ear in place and put it back in the machine to stitch the ear down.

Ta daaaa! How cute is that? I don’t yet know what this will become. But I can see making blocks for a baby quilt out of 30s fabrics. I might have to try a few more appliqué dies!

Have a great day!

Amelia’s Rooster Progress

This quilt is a fun mix of traditional and improv. Amelia made things work. Thanks to a few math errors on my part, I’m doing the same. The next round of blocks were added.

But I was really bothered by that area in the upper right. It seemed to really draw my eye away from the center. So I did a bit of ripping and fixed that.

Much better.

I have pieces cut for the next round.

More square in a square blocks. The one thing I don’t like when working on a project like this, is the mess.

Yikes! I will have a lot of refolding to do.

I’m also trying to figure out how big I want to make my version. Right now, it is 34 inches square. After the next round, it will be 42. Do I want a wall quilt or a bed quilt? I really don’t know. I guess I’ll decide after each round if I’m done or not.

Have a great day!

A Sweet Little Reproduction

I think everyone has seen this sweet little quilt on Pinterest. I’ve had it pinned for ages.

I decided to finally kit up my own version. I have no idea how big the original is. I cut my squares 2 1/2 inches.

I have everything pinned to keep order and I’m ready to sew.

Unless I change my mind on some of the fabrics….

Have a great day!

Amelia Brown’s Patchwork Quilt

There is a quilt in the collection of the Museum of AppliedArts and Sciences in New South Wales, known as Amelia Brown’s Patchwork Quilt. Here it is:

You can read about this amazing quilt here.

A number of people I follow on Instagram have been working on their own versions of this quilt. Search for the hashtag #ameliabrownsroostermedallion. I resisted until this past week. I knew that rooster in the center was beyond my skill set. So I found a free clip art rooster online.

And I simplified it. Perhaps a bit too much…

His beak is not well defined enough. Ugh. Oh well, I soldiered on.

I’m considering trying to fix him a bit, but I’m afraid of ruining it. This will likely be a long term project; it should be. But she keeps calling to me. I made a math error in my next round of blocks and added strips to compensate.

Now I really need to get to work on something else!

But before I go, I want to share a very special Accuquilt Live program that will be happening tomorrow.

Have a great day!

A Little Finish on Sunday

I finished up my little quilt and it fit perfectly on this little doll bed. I did use straight pins in the corners to keep it looking neat in the corners.

I kept the quilting simple, but it really adds a lot. I didn’t see this until I was preparing this post, but I seem to have created a tiny basket in the middle. All thanks to lucky fabric placement!

Here is the back. This is a cute print, but I have a hard time using it in piecing. It is perfect as a little quilt backing.

These little quilts are like fun size candy bars, a quick little treat. Maybe I should call them fun size quilts?

Have a great day!

This and That

I got a present in the mail the other day. The mister and I are signed up for a motorcycle class in July! I can’t wait! My dad used to ride and back in the day, I’d ride with him. But I’ve never driven one. I can’t wait to learn.

This also showed up. Ugh. I get it, civic duty and all that, but this is the fifth time for me!

Some recent happy mail from very thoughtful and generous bloggy friends. 😊

One of my favorite summer things, hanging my sheets on the line!

I’ve been trying to learn continental knitting. It’s supposed to be easier on your hands. I started a sock and ripped it out twice before trying something easier.

I don’t even want to tell you how long it took me to knit this little cactus! I might try another before I try socks again. I keep dropping stitches. Clearly, I need more practice.

Have a great day!
