Hallelujah! It is finished

Yesterday was a full day. I drove down to Lansing for a QOV sew day and came home to make dinner and finish the batik quilt.

It. Is. Finished.

I put it on my bed this morning to take some pictures and the quilting DOES show in the morning light.

The last two pictures show the truest color, though not exact. It is more purple. My bed is queen size and the quilt is not centered on it. I hope to get some better pictures before I mail it out on Monday. Hope she likes it!

Fresh Sewing Day

Lily at Lily’s Quilts is hosting Fresh Sewing Day. An opportunity to share what you  have accomplished over the last month. I realized I didn’t set any goals this month but I did end up with a number of finishes.

20130705-101229.jpg

This was first, a quilt to be donated and a chance to practice feathered wreaths.

This mini was sent to a lady who has quilted HUNDREDS of Quilts of Valor and works tirelessly for that cause. She is also a vet herself. Hats off to Diane!

And my July Small Quilt Talk Challenge quilt. I really want to get the Batik Behemoth quilt finished but that did not happen. It is loaded and ready to work on when I get off work today. My new goal is to get it done and mailed by Tuesday. We’ll see….

Here is what Lily wrote about Fresh Sewing Day : “And what about you?  What have you worked on this month?  Any finishes?  Maybe a mosaic of everything you’ve been doing?  One favourite thing?  Link up at the bottom of this post to share what you’ve been working on.  If you do link up, how about visiting at least four of the other blogs who link up – two above you and two below you – and stopping to leave a comment as well as visiting back anyone who visits you.”

Quilt of Valor Presentation

Here are a couple pictures from my QOV presentation today.

QOVJuly13 001 QOVJuly13 002

In Romans 13:7, it says to give honor where honor is due. It is such a privilege to be part of the Quilts of Valor Foundation and to honor our veterans in this way.

And the winner is….

I will e-mail you this morning to get your mailing address. And since I was feeling bad about these sorry little blocks, I decided to throw in a mini roll of hand dyed pastel strips.

Thanks to everyone that left comments. I appreciate each and every person that visits my little corner of the world and takes the time to leave comments.

I am working today and I can’t wait! I do love my job and I work with wonderful people. But today, I get to make a Quilt of Valor presentation to the husband of a coworker. He is a veteran of Desert Storm.

I pray today for all our service men and women. God, please richly bless the for their unselfish service to our country and may they receive all the honor and appreciation due them.

Loaded!

Yesterday was my day off but most of it was spent cleaning house. I will spare you pictures of that! I also finally settled on batting for the BB. This is what I bought:

20130730-100156.jpg
She preferred a poly batt and this was recommended by several long arm quilters. It is thin but dense. I think she wanted a poofier batting but my only other local option was Mountain Mist. If you look a bit online, this is not well liked among machine quilters. I got the beast loaded and ready to quilt.

BTW, I had my MIL re-measure her mattress, including the depth, and it seems that her king size mattress is on the smallish side. This is great news for me if you remember my backing dilemma. I ended up just taking off the side borders to make the top fit the back.

This is the pantograph I plan to use.

20130730-100510.jpg
It is called Starstruck and is by Meadowlyon Designs. I work until 9 tonight so I probably won’t get anything done today, except wind a few bobbins.

Today, I am linking up with Connie at Free Motion By The River.

Also, if you like little handpiecing projects, scroll down for my mini bow tie giveaway a few posts back. I will pick a winner (?), tomorrow morning.

Design Wall Monday

I am starting to think about my QOV for August. These tumblers are cut but I am thinking they may need something plain in between.

20130729-071009.jpg
I also need to make a quilt for my niece for her graduation gift. I want to take it when I go home in a week and a half….

20130729-071128.jpg
I would like to use this collection. I do have the batik quilt to finish as well. I have a backup plan if I don’t get the grad quilt done. I always have the tumbler quilt I can gift instead.

Blog 012

I really do like this quilt too, just not real happy with the quilting I did on it.

I am linking up with Judy at Patchwork Times for Design Wall Monday. Check out what others are working on here.

BTW, I have written about a tiny give-away in my last post so scroll down if you are interested in helping me find a home for a little orphan project!

Mini Give-away

Last night, I posted a picture of the SQT challenge quilt I made for July. I mentioned that I didn’t follow directions. The reason for that is that I already had some little hand pieced Bowtie blocks in a different size. I figured I could kill two birds with one stone, finishing the challenge and a UFO at the same time. Except…. I have leftovers. These pieces and parts are not going back in the cupboard. They will either go into the bin or to one lucky (maybe not so lucky?) blog reader. Please understand, this is no great prize!
I have one complete block and enough bits for 11 more cut and ready to piece. I also have just the “tie” parts for another 11 blocks.

20130729-062559.jpg

20130729-062613.jpg
If I get more than one comment for these sorry little bits, I will draw names when I get up Wednesday morning. Please make sure I can contact you. They mock me from their little plastic box on my shelf and I want to be rid of them. Thanks for helping me out.

BTW, they are all Civil War repros in browns, greens, and golds. The background bits are a tea dyed muslin. Sorry for the terrible picture.

Weekend Interrupted

The weekend is nearly over. I spent a good portion of it fending off a migraine but I did get a little bit accomplished. I finished the binding for the batik behemoth.

20130728-212857.jpg
That’s a lot of binding!
I also completed my July Challenge quilt for the Small Quilt Talk group. Sort of. I didn’t follow directions very well. Oh well, at least I made a small quilt out of bowties.

20130728-213232.jpg
And I did a tiny little bit of grandma shopping.

Good news, bad news, amazing news!

First the good news, I finished piecing the top for the king size batik behemoth. Yay! I washed the backing and loaded it on the frame…..bad news time…..it shrunk so much it it now too narrow for the top!

Uggggggg!!!!

20130727-075735.jpg
If I remove the narrow border from one side, it will JUST fit. This can go across the top of the quilt. Or I can buy a bigger backing, but it has to be one piece because she wants to use  the back for a top for a change of pace. Also, any idea how hard it is to find a purple back that is more than 108″ wide? And how pricy? I have a headache today and can’t think too much about this now. However, that leaves me with a big purple cloud hanging over my head, a weighty one.

Now for the amazing news! My son sent us a package and said we couldn’t open it until we skyped with him and his lovely wife. This is what was inside:

20130727-080248.jpg
How amazing is that? I am still in shock! This will be our first grandchild and frankly, I think I am much too young …..how did my son get to be old enough to be a dad himself? So my hubby and I have been saying that “grandma and grandpa” sound old…and we don’t want to be confused with the other grandparents so we need to figure out what this beautiful child will call us. What do your grandchildren call you?

Here is the lovely couple:

ZachAnna

Aren’t they adorable?

And here is my first gratuitous grandbaby picture:

You can see already that this child is beautiful, smart, incredible!

Psalm 139:13-16

New International Version (NIV)

13 For you created my inmost being;     you knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;     your works are wonderful,     I know that full well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you     when I was made in the secret place,     when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;     all the days ordained for me were written in your book     before one of them came to be.

ETA: Did you know that today is the Feast of St Anne, the patron saint of seamstresses? Pretty cool! In honor of that, Angie at Quilting on the Crescent is having a Celebrate Sewing Linky party. You can find other links here.
