Antique Quilt Repair

I finished taking this quilt apart. In the process, I found one piece that needed to be replaced.

I decided to applique a new piece over top rather than removing this. I thought I’d share how I did this. First, I placed a piece of printer paper on my wool mat.

I placed the top with the torn piece over top and stuck straight pins in around the edges of the piece.

This made holes in the paper.

Then I roughly connect the dots to make my pattern.

That should do nicely. The point on the original piece was blunted, so I will blunt the new piece as well.

Time to find an appropriate scrap to use and get it stitched in place.

I placed my paper pattern on my scrap and ironed the seam allowances over the edge of the paper.

Then I removed the paper and pinned my piece into place and appliqued it down.

The blue triangle here is slsd a replacement.

Time to get this basted!

Have a good one!

Finish It Up Wednesday ~ 50 Shades of Brown

I finished my little quilt from the Humble Quilts quilt along. Mine turned out humble indeed!

I used up bobbins that had very little thread left when I quilted this.

Washing made it crinkle up and helped to hide my many flaws.

A big thanks to Lori for another fun quilt along!

Head over to Humble Quilts to see more.

Have a great weekend!

Troublesome Tuesday

This used to be my main machine quilting machine.

But I haven’t used it for that since I got my long arm. I decided to pull it out and give it a try on this little quilt from the quilt along.

Ummmmm…..

I can’t remember what walking foot I used to use! Why did I wait so long to look at the back? After ripping that all out, I tried another walking foot.

Oh bother!

Finally, that looks better.

This will be a humble quilt indeed! Have a great day!

DWMonday ~ Churn Dashes

I haven’t forgotten these! I just haven’t gotten around to doing anything with them. But I’ve started auditioning sashing fabrics. These two are front runners. The first is a Minnick and Simpson print.

This next one is French General.

I think I prefer the first, but I’m not sure I have enough. My original thought was to make all the sashings different, but I think having them the same pulls it together. I do like the lighter look.

Time to try a few more, I think. Have a great day!

Slow Unstitching Sunday

I’m not done quilting the Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt, but I’m already thinking of the next project. And I’ve decided, this will be it.

I considered someone’s idea of using the ties as basting and cutting them out as I quilt. But in some places, the batting is very thick and in other places, it is nonexistent. So I snipped the ties on the back.

And then pulled them off the front.

I visited with Daughter #1 while doing this and the time flew by! Next, I will rip the stitches along the edge. I suspect this will get messy.

I think it looks better already! I’m so going to enjoy studying all these fabrics while I quilt this winter.

Have a great day!

Saturday with Shirts

No finishes today since I shared one yesterday. But I did get my strips cut from the shirtings this week.

Sigh….so satisfying to see these all neatly cut and stacked! Now they will get used! BTW, I cut these into 2 1/2 inch strips with my die cutter. There are 360 strips ranging from 14-22 inches. So many possibilities! I still have the shirt fronts with pockets and will probably use those for improv piecing. I also have all the shirt backs, but they are put away for now.

I shared most of this the other day. I’ve since added more pieces, including solid gray squares to the box. This one container has the pieces needed for four quilts.

One of my goals for this month was kitting up projects and I feel I have a good start here!

Have a great day!

Leader/Ender Update

Remember this?

I’m up to 24 blocks and I started running out of green pieces. So I decided it was time to take stock. When I make a leader ender project like this, I start out by very scientifically cutting a “bunch” of pieces. When I start to run out, then it is time to figure out where this is headed, how big I want it to be, and what I need to finish cutting. Here are my scribbles.

I have such neat handwriting….not!

Still have plenty of print squares! But today I’ll be cutting up the rest of the green that I need.

I’ve been asked many times about a pattern for this block. It is just a bunch of two inch and 3 1/2 inch squares. No pattern really needed.

Have a great day!

Finish It Up Thursday ~ FQS Half Yard Jam

Remember back in August when I was working on a secret sewing project? I can finally share it with you! I present to you Half Yard Jam, a pattern by the Fat Quarter Shop!

This is a big quilt measuring 90 by 90 inches and it requires 18 half yard pieces. I used Pin Drop by a Riley Blake for my version.

I used random bits of leftover yardage for today back.

I will be using this for a wedding gift.

Although it does look great on this bed….

You can find the free pattern here. And you can click here to go to the FQS blog and see other versions of this quilt.

Have a great day!

Cutting up Shirts

Do you use men’s shirts to make quilts?

I’ve made quite a few. The mister cleaned out his closet a while back and discarded MANY! I shoved them in bins and there they sat. I have shirts from my hubby, my son, my two sons in law, my father in law, and scraps left from my dad’s shirts. It was time to get them under control.

I finally took apart all the intact shirts. What a job! I use the sleeves, back, and the two front sides. I do not bother with collars and yokes. That’s just crazy!

Then I make stacks with all the shirt fronts in a pile, sleeves in another, and backs in another. They take up much less room this way.

I used these dies to cut up the sleeves.

I was generous with throwing away extra bits!

After a long afternoon, I ended up with this.

Doesn’t look like much, but these stacks are several inches high. My next project from these shirts will be to cut 2 1/2 inch strips from the shirt fronts. But maybe not today….

Have a good one!

This is a really long post, so please bear with me! My numbering system continues on from yesterday.

The not so fine print: I’ve made so many small quilts over the years and I will never stop! But I’ve decided to try to thin out my collection to make room for more.
