Finish It Up Friday ~ Orange Crush

This little bit has been done for a while now. It’s time to share it!

I freehanded the quilting, using the piecing as a guide.

I found this subtle gray for the back and used leftover binding from Orange Craze.

I’m loving the texture!

I really enjoyed coming up with two totally different quilts from the same fabric.

Now, if only I hadn’t used up all of that orange.

Have a great day!

Utility Quilting

Moving right along on this little quilt. I grabbed a few stencils I thought might work and a bit of tailor’s chalk.

I used leftover size 8 perle cotton and a big needle. It was out of the package so I don’t know for sure what it was.

I’m loving it so far! Have a great day!

Utility Quilt Experimentation

I’ve been thinking about utility quilts lately. You know, the kind made to be finished as quickly and efficiently as possible. I think a lot of Gee’s Bend quilts were made as utility quilts. Anyway, I found these woven flannel scraps and stitched them together.

Some leftover woven plaid seemed a good border choice.

Yep, that’s working for me. Slapdash, so I can get to the quilting.

I loaded it up for basting. Those little patches?

They are covering little spots in the flannel where new threads were tied in during manufacturing. Like this:

Yes, they wouldn’t show if I had the back side of the fabric down, but I like mixing both sides in this piece. The patches add to the feel.

Hang with me. Hand quilting is next.

Have a great day!

Finish It Up Sunday ~ Green 4 Patch

It’s done! I picked up this vintage top last winter. After some repairs, it was ready for hand quilting.

I used a large Baptist Fan stencil available from Barb at Fun with Barb, and size 5 ecru perle cotton.

As usual, I used I unbleached muslin for the back. It crinkled up nicely after washing.

The next few photos were taken before washing. I always find the comparison interesting.

Thanks for following along on this project! Have a great day!

This and That

I flew back to Michigan the last week in February to see the family there. I took this top with me.

I knew I had this perfect backing fabric from dear Ila.

I ended up not working on this while I was there, but I’ll get back to it when I am home for the summer.

All three of the E’s got their turn to sleep over at Nana’s.

This little guy was pretty proud of his new Harley jacket.

I looked out the window one day and saw this.

Nine deer in my backyard! We live in a subdivision! There is a patch of woods behind the houses across the street from us and a patch behind our house. We occasionally see deer run through our yard from one patch to the other, but I’ve never see this many at once.

Have a great day!

Finish It Up ~ Grandmother’s Fan

Today I get to share with you the quilt I made from AccuQuilt’s newest die, Grandmother’s Fan.

Winslow wanted to be included in the photo. 😂

I love this bit of quilting in the middle.

I was less enthused about the pebbles and swirls. I do love that binding!

I should have used a ruler in some areas, but got lazy. The overall texture is good.

I found the backing fabric in my stash.

Each fan block finishes at 9” so each “wheel” is 18 inches. I’d love to make a bed quilt like this done day!

Leftovers

I found these leftover HSTs while looking for something else.

There was just the right number for an idea I wanted to try.

I even quilt small quilts on my long arm.

A bit of leftover binding and it was done!

I used an old piece of a cheater print on the back.

I already shared this on Instagram, but thought you all may enjoy it here as well.

Have a great day!

More Brights

I only used half of this jelly roll for my Orange Craze quilt. I couldn’t leave half of a jelly roll hanging around, so it was imperative that I find a project to use it up!

This is where I’m headed.

I start by sewing a solid orange and jelly roll strip together.

Then I fold in half and use my rotary cutter to trim off the very edge of the fold.

Sew the resulting two pieces together.

And repeat!

Time for a bit more exacting cuts. I grabbed my 3” strip die to get these.

I sew these three pieces end to end and one row is done. Easy peasy!

Time to sew those rows together.

Have a great day!
