May Wrap Up

It’s been a good month. Love how this Farmer’s Wife quilt turned out.

And my little swap quilt.

Most of my time was spent on art pieces.

But of course, I snuck in a mini made of repros.

Have a great day!

I figured it out!

Remember these strings? I pieced these together last fall before I left for Arizona. I had no plan for them, just wanted to get to the bottom of my string bin.

Well, I found it! The perfect way to use these! How gorgeous is this? This quilt is by Sharon Tucker of Grass Roots Quilting .

The pattern is available on the APQS website. It was on the cover of APQ magazine in April 2017. I had to dig to find it. Yes I know, I’m late to the party!

I know I have the cheddar I need, but I’ll have to look for the perfect red. I’m really excited to start this!

Have a great day!

A UFO

Remember these?

I’m not in love with them, but I cut more pieces when I was cleaning out my scrap bucket.

I have no real plan here. I’ll just make a few now and then. Maybe they will grow on me.

Have a great day!

Memorial Day 2023

Memorial Day…. It brings up so many vivid images in my mind. And I guess that is the point, remembering. So very thankful for all those who gave their lives so that I can live mine. I don’t have many words today, but I thought I’d share a handful of the patriotic quilts I’ve made over the years. Have a great day. 🇺🇸❤️

This and That

Happy Sunday! I’m still playing with bias tape. Here is my latest idea. Yes, it’s a riff on Picasso’s dachshund. It needs a bit of finessing before I start glue basting.

Speaking of bias tape, my experiments can continue thanks to the generosity of blog reader, Anne!

You’ve seen this piece before. I found out this week that it sold at the show! I had to go visit it one last time.

Last weekend, the mister and I attended the Blessing of the Bikes in Baldwin, Michigan. What an experience! 40,000 bikers in attendance!

My sweet babies. ❤️

Have a great day!

Knitting Again

I’m an on again, off again knitter, at best. But I can’t seem to pass up pretty yarn! I found this lot at a recent yard sale.

This is my favorite. It is a merino wool and silk blend.

This bamboo feels heavenly!

I might need to make lots of yellow socks.

I started a hat to get myself back into the swing of things. This is the same as the skein above, but in a different color way.

I love an easy pick up project while visiting with family. And two of our daughters will be here tomorrow with their families.

Have a great day!

Finish It Up Friday ~ Tangle 2

You’ve been seeing glimpses of this, now it is finished, except for the sleeve. I’ll share a post on that soon. It is a bit different for an art show versus a quilt show.

I also have to decide which way is up. This way…..

Or this way. What do you think?

The background is a bit of my own hand dyed fabric. The tangle is commercial single fold bias tape.

Have a great day!

Victory!

I have successfully scaled Mount Scrapmore!

Never mind that I have another heaping bucket just like it to deal with.

Let’s focus on the positive, shall we?

I’ve added to my 1 1/2, 2, and 2 1/2 inch square bins.

And I cut pieces for specific blocks.

And added strings to the string bucket.

It doesn’t really look like much now, but everything takes up much less space when it’s all neatly cut and stacked.

Full disclosure, I do have a few piles I set aside.

Solids.

Blues.

And these wovens .

I have a few more FQ bundles of wovens and when I use them, I’ll add the scraps and decide what to do with them.

The solids are mostly neutrals. I don’t know what they will become.

I have an idea for those blues. Wait and see.

I’m so thankful for my AccuQuilt die cutter. I used to get overwhelmed with these odd bits and, gasp….throw them out!

Have a great day!

Finishing with a Facing

I thought I’d share today how I add facings to a quilt. I prefer a facing to a binding on a modern wall quilt.

I cut my facing strips 2 1/2” wide. I fold over and press one edge about a quarter inch.

Next I pin pieces to the top and bottom as shown. Tip: cut your facings a quarter to half inch shorter than the width of your quilt and stretch to fit. This helps “encourage “ the edge to roll toward the back when finished. You really don’t want the facing to be seen.

Next add strips to the sides, stretching a bit to fit, and pin.

You’ll notice that these pieces don’t go all the way to the corner. They don’t need to and it reduces bulk at the corners this way.

Sew a quarter inch all around the edge and then clip a tiny bit at each corner.

Turn the facing to the back and press. Take your time with this part.

Lastly, slip stitch to the back.

Stand back and admire your work! I hope this helps if you ever need to do a facing.

Have a great day!
