Back to the 16 Patch

Now that the sister quilt is in the binding stage, I’m back to working on my 16 patch. I am following the advice of Wanda, from Exuberant Color, and adding a 3 inch white border and a wide, wild outer border. I got the white border added before work yesterday and I am hoping to get the outer border added today.

I am debating how to cut this. The logical thing would be to cut it lengthwise at those narrow bands. But then on the bed, all the birds are facing the floor or ceiling.  If I cut crosswise, I will have to piece the borders but they could be right side up when the quilt is on the bed. Decisions, decisions.

On another note, I appreciate the feedback on the quilting on the sister quilt. Not everything turns out exactly how we plan in our minds. But that isn’t all bad. I like to share successes but also the things that are not so successful. Perhaps others can learn from my mistakes as well.

Have a wonderful day!

About katyquilts

I am a wife, mom of four amazing kids, and a librarian. I have been making traditional quilts for ages but have ventured into art qulting in the last several years. I also love to knit socks and mittens and dye my own fabric. I am thankful to God my Father and Creator for the gift of creativity!

O My Gosh! Love that border print! No matter how you place that fabric, it will be gorgeous! Thank you for posting your “not-so-successful” outcomes. I’d much rather follow the posts of someone who I can relate to.

  2. Those birds are adorable. Can’t wait to see how you decide to cut. I like when someone shares the not so successful — your sharing helps me learn and improve. Thanks.

  3. This is a tough decision. If you want to showcase the border fabric it would be cut along the stripe. If you want it more whimsical and relaxed it would be cut crosswise. Maybe the decision is “Is it a formal quilt or a fun quilt?”.

I’m not sure that I would have had the courage to try using a large-scale fabric like that … but seeing it with your quilt, I see that it’s a delightful choice! Good advice from Wanda … and fabulous choice on your part. I, too, enjoy reading the good and the bad experiences of my fellow quilters … while I’m not a long-armer, these conversations help us all learn and grow.

  5. Wanda always has great ideas. I love her quilts.

I really like your backing choice. I think your sister will love her quilt.

Do you have enough of it to cut along the stripe for the sides and cut across for the ends? Looking at your second and third photos together and thought it might be kind of fun, and the birds would all be going the same direction. Just a thought. : )
