Hand Quilting

I’ve been out of town for the past week. I managed to get a fair amount of hand quilting done.

It’s hard to see in this photo.

I’m using a small template I made and chalk to mark the quilting.

And I’m using pearl cotton to quilt with.

It shows up better on the back.

I will soon have to decide how to quilt the borders.

Have a great day!

Slow Stitching Sunday ~ Aunt Martha

This project involves many steps. At least the way I am doing it! I stamped a bunch of pieces while watching my grandsons in our backyard one day.

Then I trimmed with scissors. I had no idea how dull my fabric scissors were! I have them pinned as they will be sewn into rows.

It took me an hour and 15 minutes to piece these six rows.

Sewing the rows together is fiddly business.

But another hour and 15 minutes later and it was ready to press!

I’m thrilled with the accuracy. But it does take a long time. Here is the back.

Time to prep the pieces for my next point.

Have a great day!

Ladies Aid BOM

Barbara Brackman released this months block last week.

I traced the circles. Then I cut multiples of the leaf shape out of freezer paper. I ironed them in place on the back of the block.

Then I traced around them with my pencil to prepare for back basting.

This worked really well. I hope I remember this tip so I can use it again in the future!

I’m not a car person, so I’ve left the center blank for now. Barbara told me there is a dog block coming up. Yippee! She suggested using this as a signature block.

Methinks that is a very good idea indeed.

Have a great day!

Finish It Up Friday ~ Sawtooth Diamond in a Square

This quilt has been on my bucket list for ages! I finally pieced the top last winter in Arizona.

I knew I wanted to quilt it with lots of feathers, but I was so afraid of ruining the top, that I procrastinated.

Last week I told myself, no more! I marked my top and got to work. I only marked the spines with a chalk pencil. All feathers were free handed.

My feathers are far from perfect, but I like the overall effect. I used thread to match the fabric because I knew I’d have back tracking and I wanted to minimize how noticeable that would be. What I didn’t realize is that the red thread would not behave as well as the green.

My corners sort of match! This finished at about 45 inches square.

I think now I want to put feathers on everything! I just haven’t done them in a while and I lost confidence in my ability to do them. I definitely need practice, but I’m okay with how it turned out.

I love this color combination. I might have to make a bed quilt like this some day.

Have a great day!

August Wrap Up

Apparently, this was the month for small quilts! I finished several.

This next one is hands down, my fave for this month. I see more applique in my future. I guess you CAN teach an old dog new tricks!

The next one was actually finished back in June, but I couldn’t share it until August, so it’s getting it’s spot here.

I also quilted four QOVs this month.

Have a great day!
