Jeep Invasion 2017!

A couple weekends ago, the mister and I attended our first Jeep event together since I got my Jeep, Oscar. It was held at Silver Lake Sand Dunes on the west side of Michigan. That area is absolutely gorgeous!

Friday evening I got out on the dunes for my first off road experience. Wow! It was a mix of pure terror and total euphoria!

I spent a lot of time watching YouTube videos and reading the Wrangler forums for info on off-roading in the sand. But nothing can really prepare you for the first drive down a hill so steep that you can’t see the bottom! Or driving up one where all you can see is sky until you make it (hopefully) over the crest.

You really can’t tell in pics how big these hills are.

They had over 900 Jeeps that took part in this event.

This was the first road trip I can remember taking in years that I didn’t bring ANY sewing with me. Hubby was my co-pilot, but I did all the driving.

I found out that Jeepers are some of the nicest people you could ever meet. Like quilters, they are always ready and willing to lend a helping hand and encouragement  to us newbies.

I can’t wait to go again!

Have a great day!

I love those dunes! I visited once while working in Muskegon for a summer.
My dad is 88 and has dementia. I take him out for coffee a few times a week, and today he was telling me about the dunes near their family home in Holland. He also has memories of Jeeps being used as tractors post WWII – he told a story of a man encountering a big rock in a field – he backed up a bit, then drove up and over the rock…. I remembered this post, and pulled it up for him to see – and we had a great conversation about Jeeps and memories of days gone by! So, even though this wasn’t a quilting-themed post, it brought about a lovely afternoon of reminiscing! Thanks!

Did any of the black jeeps have a bumper sticker that said ‘I’m the black jeep of the family’? I think that’s so funny.

Looks like you had a blast!! We love the dunes. You are right, can’t imagine the size, height or steepness until you are on them. We rented 4-wheelers last time we went.

The Silver Lake Dunes area is breathtaking. Many of my family have lots near the dune entrance. So visit as often as possible. Did you go over test hill? I love the rolling hills. So glad you got to experience the dunes and enjoyed it.
