DWMonday – Busting out the precuts!

I have a love/hate relationship with precuts. I love getting one bit of every piece in a line of fabric. I love that everything matches. I love how pretty they are all tied up with a ribbon.

But gosh, it is hard to break them open! I tend to hold onto them too long and then I can’t find border fabric to match. I bought this lovely bundle last summer when we visited the Missouri Star Quilt Company. I have had the hardest time trying to decide what I want to make with it. It has been years since I made a quilt for my own bed and decided this bundle would be perfect t for a quilt for my room. So I got brave.

And I started cutting.

I like to try to use up every bit of a precut bundle. This is what I hade left.

And I am short one 2.5 inch square of each fabric! I will order a charm pack of this line when I order border fabric. My blocks will measure 8 inches finished.

I am going to use all fabrics for both the stars and backgrounds. This is what not to do:

I have enough pieces cut for 96 blocks. No deadline on this so I will work on it a little at a time. It’s nice to have a project cut and ready to go when you have a few minutes to sew.

About katyquilts

I am a wife, mom of four amazing kids, and a librarian. I have been making traditional quilts for ages but have ventured into art qulting in the last several years. I also love to knit socks and mittens and dye my own fabric. I am thankful to God my Father and Creator for the gift of creativity!

Oh my … that mishap on the last block looks like something I’d do. 😉 I love those fabrics in your bundle … and love the block you’ve chosen to make! I can’t wait to see the top come together.

  2. Carla says:

Wow! You did well using that fabric to its fullest potential! I love buying fat quarters to get a lot of variety but I have never been brave enough to buy a bundle! I always worry will there be enough lights to darks, seems silly when you could always get more!

  3. Vicki in MN says:

I am the same way with the precuts, hate to cut into them cuz they are so pretty all packaged up! Kinda like that with the FQ’s that are rolled up cute too, silly us!

  4. Sue Daurio says:

I’m the same way with the fat quarter bundles. They look so cute and tidy all tied up and pretty. But they do look even better in a quilt, i just don’t always remember that. Oh my on 2.5 in sqaure short, sooooo close!

When an antique quilt display from Winterarther came to the Milwaukee Art Museum, I was astonished to see that in a magnificent Lone Star Quilt, some of the tiny diamonds were pieced from two fabrics–and not always matching fabrics! Perhaps you could piece 2 1/2″ squares from your small scrap pile.

  6. I seem to go through phases with precuts and it has allot to do with Missouri Star quilts–Deal Of The Day. I seem to go a bit crazy and them back off when I am staring at the pile wondering what to do with them:) What a cycle it is. Thank You for stopping by and linking up with “Anything Goes Monday”. I am enjoying be a guest host and meeting so many new quilty friends. I just started following through B/L and Email (so I don’t miss out on your posts) and look forward to more of your posts in the future. And what you do with you cuts!

  7. Sandi says:

I always hate to break a set up also unless I know exactly what I want to do. I think your quilt is going to be lovely. I love stars too. Hugs,

  8. Lois says:

Yep! I’m in the same boat as the rest of you when it comes to actually using FQ bundles but I just love them. You must have laughed out loud when you saw what you did with that last block, Katy. 🙂

  9. Love stars! The fabrics are so lovely together!!!

  10. Nicole says:

For the 2.5″ square, could you piece it from the scraps? (Pain in the butt for sure, but cheaper and faster than ordering new). Or what about finding a different fabric altogether and subbing that in instead; “it’s a design feature!”

  11. Louise says:

I think you will have a beautiful quilt for your bed and doggone it you deserve it!! I come up short like that sometimes and just chalk it up to Murphy’s law, since that is our last name we abide by that law routinely. Look forward to a pic of the finished quilt.
