A little finish…

I knew today was going to be a long day at work but I wanted to get this little quilt done! Since I finished the blocks last night, the top went together pretty quickly early this morning. Then I layered and machine quilted it. I even got the binding sewon on before I had to leave at noon. I came home for “lunch” and got the hand sewing on the binding done. After getting home for the night, I took the picture.

???????????????????????????????

The top and bottom borders are wider than I would like but I wanted to use this print and didn’t want to cut any heads off! It measures 17 1/4″ x 25.”

Time to get back to that wedding quilt! Until next time…

Small quilt progress

Today was my day off from the library. Not here! I cleaned the pantry, some closets, and bathrooms. I packed and shipped a box for Daughter #2 who is in the Air Force. After running errands, making dinner and cleaning the kitchen, it was finally time to sew!
I made my daily Shoo Fly block and added it to the others. I am still ahead by a few days.

Yikes! That picture is blurry! Sorry! I also finished the other 4 blocks for my Small Quilt Challenge.

I got a lovely package in the mail from a little online shopping.

I finished knitting my ruffle scarf as well but that picture will wait for another day. Now, I am going to watch a little TV with the family and then read a bit before bed.
Until next time…

This and that….

Yesterday, DH and I took a little road trip to our favorite outlet store. I was able to finish this sock except for the bind off. I heard about a good stretchy bind off but had failed to take the directions with me to try it out. I hope to finish it later today.

???????????????????????????????

I also cut more pieces for my little ShooFly block a day that I am doing in February.

???????????????????????????????

I joined the Small Quilt Talk Yahoo group. This was started by Kathleen Tracy of The Sentimental Quilter blog. She has written several lovely books such as The Civil War Sewing Circle and Remembering Adelia. The Small Quilt Talk group if set up for the challenge of making one small quilt a month, usually from one of Kathleen’s books.  The quilt for February has 5 blocks. I cut the pieces and pieced 4 patches last night:

???????????????????????????????

This morning, I pieced one Shoo Fly and one of the blocks for the little quilt.

???????????????????????????????

Oddly, they are pretty much the same block! Yesterday, I also started quilting the center of Daughter #1’s wedding quilt. My frame is not large enough to quilt the whole thing in one go so I will have to add the borders in a quilt-as-you-go fashion. My dear hubby got me these anti-fatigue mats at Harbor Freight for standing on at the frame.

???????????????????????????????

Notice any problems in that there picture? Here let me show you a close up:

???????????????????????????????

Yep, the batting is too short. Ugggg!!!!!!!! Oh well, this isn’t too difficult to fix. And yes, it is not the first time I have done this! I have about half of the center of the quilt quilted. I hope to have this done and start adding borders tomorrow. The shower is 3 weeks from today so I need to get this done!

Until next time….

Snow day!

Welcome!

20130208-232720.jpg
This is what we woke up to this morning:

All area schools were closed and the library was too! I so enjoyed my unexpected day off. I worked on loading the wedding quilt into the frame for quilting.

I also did some cooking, cleaning, and knitting. A snow day is nice every once in a while.
Until next time…

What’s on my needles?

My pink socks are coming along slower than I would like but at least there is progress. Yes, this is still the first sock of the pair! At least it is going faster than the last pair! I would like to knit 6 pair of socks this year.

20130207-081453.jpg
And I also started working on this again:

20130207-081532.jpg
You are quite forgiven if you cannot tell what this is. It doesn’t look like anything right now!  It is made from yarn that looks like this:

20130207-081608.jpg

I bought this yarn a few months ago because I loved the colors. I did not know how to use it but the label said I could make a scarf from one skein. Hmmm….not the way I knit it the first time! I liked the way it looked but, of course, when I went back a second skein was not to be had. So it languished in the yarn bin for a while. Yesterday, I decided to look for a Youtube video to show me the right way to knit this. You can see the vidoe here. Not so hard when you can see what you are supposed to do! It will be a ruffle scarf. The yarn ended up a bit kerfluffled when I raveled the first attempt but at this point, I haven’t anything to lose.

You can see what others are knitting by checking out Judy’s Linky Party at her blog, Patchwork Times here.

Until next time…

Is it February 9th already?

Recently someone on the QOV Facebook page suggested making a block a day for the month of February. Great idea, I thought! Well….. Once I cut pieces for blocks it is really hard to wait so:

20130205-092109.jpg
Um, yeah. Oh well, at least I am ahead and not behind!
Once a month, I meet with 3 other ladies from my local guild that are interested in making art quilts. We are working through this book:

20130205-092357.jpg

This week the assignment was collage. Here is mine:

20130205-092456.jpg

The crumpled brown is from a paper bag, the ladder bits were cut from a damaged Bible, and the letters were from an old educational letter set for schools. Our next assignment is Innovative piecing. I am going to try to get that done this week as we have a wedding shower coming up the end of the month for Daughter #1.

Until next time….

Another finish

I finished the “Type” quilt for my daughter Friday night. I free motion quilts it using a design from the book Doodle Quilting. It hardly shows up at all but that made it good practice. Not happy with the binding and may redo that. My daughter loves it so I guess that is all that matters!

Collaboration

Collaboration can be a beautiful thing! Not long ago, I was trying out dies for my new studio cutter and made these blocks:

20130125-105439.jpg

I didn’t plan ahead and ran out of the white I was using. Do you know how hard it is to match white fabrics? Geesh! Anyway, I sent them to my QOV friend, Sherra, down in WV. Sherra is a regional coordinator for QOV in her area. She has been sewing her heart out  but the need is great. I sent these blocks to her to help her out. What she did with them is nothing short of amazing! Look at this:

SherraQOV

Did she do a great job? Thank you Sherra for taking my blocks and making them beautiful :).

If you are interested in making a QOV, check out the official Quilt of Valor Foundation website here. You can also check out the Facebook page here. If you don’t want to make a whole quilt, Sherra is still collecting 12″ blocks. Shoot me a message and I can get you in touch with her.

Until next time….

What’s on my needles….

On the way home from a short road trip not long ago, my wonderful hubby pulled into the parking lot of a yarn store I had never visited. He is pretty wonderful like that! Anyway, I found some lovely pink cotton/nylon blend yarn. I love knitting with wool but I just cannot wear my wook socks for more than a few hours. They make my feet itch! So I search for cotton yarn that will work for socks. I am hoping these will fit and wear well:

I am linking up to Judy’s post at Patchwork Times here. Check out what others have on their needles! While you are there, take a look around. Judy is a VERY productive quilter, knitter, and blogger!

Until next time…

A new project!

I found this adorable line of fabric about a month ago. It seemed perfect for my youngest daughter.

Isn’t it cute? It is called, appropriately, Type.
It took me a while to decide what to do with it. I didn’t want to chop it up too small. So I went with the Take 5 block. This went together in a snap! I cut pieces Wednesday, sewed blocks on Thursday, and today it is in the frame.
20130201-135909.jpg

The bundle I purchased had 7 half yards of the prints and one half yard is Kona Snow that I used for a narrow border. I had one block left over and some small scraps.
Time to quilt! Until next time…
