Design Wall Monday

I am finally putting the blocks together for my May Quilt of Valor.

20130428-213747.jpg
I hope to sew the rows together today. It will also need a border to bring it up to size. This pattern is called Take Five as there are 5 pieces in each 12″ block and it can be made with just 5 fabrics. I used a lot more than that for my blocks. This goes together VERY fast. I used the Take Five die for my Studio cutter to cut the pieces.

I am linking up with Judy at Patchwork Times for DWM. Click here to see what others are working on today.
Until next time….

Woven star tutorial

A while back, I posted a picture on the Yahoo Accuquilt group of the woven star block that I made for the Quilt of Valor block swap. Gwen asked how this block was made so I decided to create a tutorial.
Here is one of the blocks I made for the swap:

20130222-194954.jpg
Here are the dies I used for my studio cutter:

20130428-152526.jpg
I have used a silver Sharpie Marker to outline the blades of my dies (this idea came from Ebony Love at Lovebug Studios). I used the 3″ finished square, 3″ finished half square triangle, and the chisel die which finishes at 3″ by 6″. The block will finish at 12″.
First I will cut two blue and two red chisels. It is very important that all four pieces lay right side up on the die. We do not want mirror images. This shows the die and pieces with the extra fabric removed.

20130428-152929.jpg
I will also need two blue HSTs, two red HSTs, 8 white HSTs, and 4 white squares. This pic shows all pieces laid out.

20130428-153139.jpg
Next I will add the white triangles to the chisel pieces.

20130428-153256.jpg
I like to start sewing at the tip.

20130428-153338.jpg
Sew the remaining white triangles to the bye and red HSTs. Press the seams of the chisels towards the chisel piece. Press the HST seams towards the white triangles. Now lay out you pieces.

20130428-153629.jpg
Anytime you are making a block and get confused, remember this: When in doubt, lay it out! It prevents lots of mistakes. Ask me how I know.
Next sew the white squares to the HSTs like this:

20130428-153855.jpg
Here are the pieces laid out once more:

20130428-162105.jpg
Now sew the chisels to the HST bits.

20130428-162146.jpg

20130428-162205.jpg
Now just sew the rest together like a 4 patch.

20130428-162257.jpg
One se left. You are almost there!

20130428-162333.jpg
All done!

20130428-162408.jpg
Now that wasn’t so hard!
Hope someone finds this helpful. Now I have another block for my QOV sampler.
Until next time….

Happy Sunday!

The closer we get to Daughter #1’s wedding day, the less sewing I get done! It has been a glorious weekend here weatherwise. Finally, some sunshine has arrived in Michigan! It is supposed to rain a bit today but the sun will come out again tomorrow and the daffodils are blooming.
We went to an estate sale yesterday at an old Saginaw limber baron’s mansion. What an incredible house!

20130428-091432.jpg
Sadly, the house is crumbling and in a deplorable state of disrepair.

20130428-091524.jpg
I am glad I got to see it. I wish I had the funds to restore this place.
Back to quilting, I finally appliqued my little hexagon quilt to its new background. I am not in love with it but it is better than the green one.

20130428-091724.jpg
Now I need to figure out how to quilt it. I also sewed a couple more rows for my larger hexagon quilt.

20130428-091832.jpg
I hope to sew the rows together today. But that all depends on the weather 🌞.
And that May QOV?

20130428-092018.jpg
Um, yeah, about that. Might not happen before the wedding.
Until next time, enjoy this beautiful day that God has made!

This and That Tuesday

It’s a busy day with lots to do. First up, a trip to the vet for this guy.

20130423-112149.jpgThen choosing a new background/border fabric for this.

20130423-112242.jpg
Binding this.

20130423-112310.jpg
Time to make some appointments and then off to work until 9. I hope to get the hand stitching on the little quilt done when I get home tonight.
Until next time….

Design Wall Monday

Welcome to another edition of DWM! You can see what others are working on by checking the Judy’s post at Patchwork Times. Here is my design wall today:

20130422-093207.jpg
I am machine piecing this quilt. I posted a tutorial to show you how I do this here. I cut my pieces for this quilt using this die:

20130422-093327.jpg

20130422-093335.jpg
Sharon asked about the tiny hexagon quilt I have been working on.

20130422-093437.jpg
In this picture, the he idea on the outer edges appear elongated. This is because the edges still show the seam allowances. Here is a pic of the back side.

20130422-093552.jpg
And here is a pic showing the piece being appliqués to a background.

20130422-093656.jpg
On e the seams are turned under, they no longer appear to be elongated. I finished the appliqué and decided I hated it!

20130422-093809.jpg
I love this green fabric but it isn’t working here. So I pressed the piece and then took at apart. I will audition other fabrics today. At least I won’t have to needle turn the edges as I go this time since the seams are now pressed.
Happy Monday

Machine piecing hexagons-Tutorial

I thought since I was working on this quilt anyway, that I would create a tutorial on machine piecing hexagons. I have already shown that I cut my hexagons and then mark the seams with a pencil like this:

20130421-095116.jpg

When I am ready to sew, I lay two hexagons right side together lie this:

20130421-095134.jpg

I start stitching a bit forward of the corner and backstitch into it.

20130421-095149.jpg

When I get to the next corner, I backstitch again. This keeps the seam allowances free just like in hand piecing. Then I pull the piece out and start the next one without cutting the threads in between.

20130421-095206.jpg

I sew two together then the twos into fours etc. When I get a full row, I press the seams open. For the purposes of this tutorial, I only pieced into chains of four hexagons. Normally, I would piece a chain the full width of the quilt. You can see below how two rows fit together.

20130421-095224.jpg

The tricky part is putting right sides together to sew the rows together. Then they look all weird like this:

20130421-095238.jpg

You just have to focus on one little seam at a time. It will work! Just start the first segment just like you did when you put twos together. Backstitch into the corner and then move ahead.

20130421-095251.jpg

Stop when you get to the corner, drop the needle,  and lift the presser foot.

20130421-095305.jpg

Now take the top piece and move it to the right and the bottom piece gets moved to the left to line up the next segment of the seam.

20130421-095324.jpg

Again, stop when you get to the corner. This time, it will be in the middle where you pressed the seam open.  You could pin but I don’t.

20130421-095345.jpg

20130421-095357.jpg

Now bring the top to the left and the bottom to the right to line up the next part.

20130421-095417.jpg

20130421-095430.jpg

Keep zigzagging back and forth and backstitch at the corner when you get  to the end. When you turn your piece over, it should look like this:

20130421-095446.jpg

This is how I press my rows.

20130421-095458.jpg

And this is what the front looks like:

20130421-095509.jpg

I do use a smaller stitch length when I piece this way. It takes a bit of practice but it is easier than you think and fun besides! If you have any questions, please ask! It is easy to overlook things when creating a tutorial. You will be helping me out if you let me know what is not clear.  If you give this a try, drop me a line and let me know what you think.

Now, I am off to church.

Until next time….

A little hand piecing

Last night, as I watched coverage of the Boston manhunt, I added some of the prepared hexagons to this miniature.

20130420-080053.jpg
I don’t think I will add any more hexagons but I need to figure out how to finish it. Right now, it measures about 6″ x 8″. I also marked seams on these hexagons while we traveled yesterday.

20130420-080419.jpg
You can see they are a bit bigger!

20130420-080537.jpg
I am not sure if I will hand or machine piece these or how big it will end up. Because I marked the seams, I can do both on this same piece. I have done this before with great success.
It snowed yesterday. The sun is shining today. I sure hope it warms up soon!
Until next time….

A fun day!

My wonderful hubby bought a new truck this week. So today we both took the day off and took a little road trip to try it out. First stop he surprised me with was a quilt shop! I bought some beautiful fabrics for a very special Quilt of Valor.

20130419-204326.jpg

20130419-204336.jpg

20130419-204344.jpg
This will be for my beautiful daughter, Annie.

20130419-204522.jpg
She has been in the USAF for nearly two years now as a member of the 56th Security Forces Squadron. It will take a while for this quilt, it has to be my very best.
I also  found this while I was out shopping:

20130419-204743.jpg
Perfect for a proud Air Force mom!
While we were traveling, I worked on preparing hexagons for hand piecing.

20130419-204904.jpg
Finished, these measure 3/4″ across. I like to mark the seams and hand piece rather than use papers.

It was such a fun day with my honey! Oh, here is a pic of his fancy new truck:

Until next time…

In place of regularly scheduled programming….

No sewing too place yesterday due to a migraine. Hate those things! Anyway, wonderful hubby picked up meds from the pharmacy and felt enough better to go to Salvation Army with my girls for a half hour last night. I found a couple of interesting pieces of fabric.

20130418-073957.jpg

If anyone knows anything about these, I would love to hear about it. They will go in the wash today. Now I am off to work.
Until next time…

Revisiting the Get it Done Goals

April 15th has come and gone and yes, my taxes are done! Yayyy! I thought I would revisit the rest of my goals for the month and see how I am doing.

1. Quilt and bind one more service quilt. Done!

???????????????????????????????

2. Ship quilts to QBB.  Done!

3. April SQT challenge quilt. Done!

Quilts 006

4. May SQT challenge quilt. Done!

5. Small quilt for SQT Swap for Judith in Wales! Done but not shipped.

6. Border and bind QOV # 12 (for April). Blocks are done and together. Done but not delivered.

20130409-080346.jpg

7. QOV #13 (for May).  – Blocks cut and stitched.

8. Finish Yellow socks. I just turned the heel on sock #1. Sock #1 is done and the toe on Sock #2 is started.

Having a list is really helping me to stay on task! I am going to add another goal here, I need to learn some more about my mid-arm machine. We don’t always get along. I have another service quilt on the frame now that should have been done by now. I want to get that quilted and bound by the end of the month. With the  rocky relationship that Barney and I are having at the moment, that is a bigger goal than it sounds.

20130413-080945.jpg

The wedding is one month away. I am not sure I will even have any goals for May outside of that!

Until next time…
