A very tiny finish…

So many things still to do and yet, I haven’t done any real sewing in nearly a week. So when I spotted some tiny hourglass blocks in the sewing room, I decided this was a project of a size I could finish before work today. I added some vintage indigos and a claret border from my vintage fabric stash as well as a vintage shirting for the back/binding.

It measures 6″ x 7 3/4″.

I do have one slightly larger finish as well.

I bought this step stool at Ikea about ten years ago. About time I stained it!

DIY Projects

Not much sewing but lots of house projects this week. Here are a few pics of the almost finished guest room.

The oval pictures show my grandfather in his World War 1 uniform and  one set of great grandparents. I found the vintage night shirt long ago and always wanted to hang it on a wall. This felt like the perfect room. I do need to find the perfect vintage hanger though. This one is not right. My lovely DIL bought this picture frame for me.

The picture shows my paternal grandparents on their wedding day in 1922. I would like to find a vintage looking headboard yet but will wait until I see something I really love.
The doll bed project has been more of a challenge than I expected. It will definitely look distressed when I am done…..or maybe that is how I look working on it. I sanded forever and the stain looked like this:

Yuck. This morning I decided to spray paint the whole thing. I used what paint I found in the garage. I will probably knock it back with sandpaper yet. Still not happy with it. And I thought that would be an easy job!
I’ve also cleaned the freezer, cleaned several closets, mowed the lawn, and a number of other mundane but necessary chores. So much more I want to do before the hubby gets home tomorrow night but I work 1-9 today. I better get moving!

Design Wall Monday

Lots of painting this weekend! The guest room has gone from this:

To this:

There is much more to be done but the projects in mind are more fun than painting over the orange! It took three coats tocover that wall. One coat on the rest since I stayed with the same yellow. I have been shopping my house for things to go in here. I tried this:

Nope, too new. But I have some wonderful vintage bits here and there that I will use. I will show you those treasures when the room  is all done. I also have this:

My hubby bought me this at Ikea years ago to display some of my doll quilts. It has been in my closet for ages. Time to make it look old. Hope to show that finished project tomorrow.
I also started playing with these:

They would make a great little quilt for my doll bed.

Not that I need one, I have dozens! But this room will be an opportunity to use a number of quilts that have been in storage.
I am linking up with Judy at Patchwork Times. Go check out what others are working on.

What I am actually working on:

20130615-080447.jpg
Dear Daughter #3 moved into her new room last night. It is all painted and clean and she is getting things put away. Now I can work on the guest room. I am filling holes and will paint today. Thankfully I won’t have to paint trim in here. I hope to finish painting today and get the carpet cleaned tonight. I can’t wait to set up the bed and get a quilt on it!

Busy week

It has been a busy week around here. Hubby is gone and that always seems like a good time to paint. Daughter #3 and I have repainted Daughter #1’s old room. We still have trim to paint and the carpet to clean and then she can move in. After that, her old room will become the guest room. I hope to get that painted as well before hubby comes home. Not much sewing has happened but I did make progress on the QOV I showed earlier this week.

This will have a border of the flag fabric added and the the top will be done. I hope to get it loaded today but since I work this afternoon, it is iffy.
Back to work!

Addicting…

I got up yesterday morning and decided to just load the bright triangle quilt before work.

20130611-121743.jpg
Then I thought, I will just quilt until I have to roll.

20130611-121841.jpg
Looks cool maybe one more roll…okay one more and I will get ready for work….. Okay, ready, still have time, one more…..and pretty soon, it is done.

Another Quilt of Valor

After I presented the QOV to Houston last week, a coworker asked how her husband could get a quilt too. He is a Gulf War vet and served with the Marines. I told her I would be honored to make a quilt for him. I came home and for several days, I could not come up with an idea that felt right. I have several projects on my to do list right now but I haven’t yet made a QOV for June. I try to complete one a month. I had some bits and pieces from an earlier failed idea and started throwing them up on the wall.

20130611-070033.jpg
Okay, not quite right but there is something there. I walked away, posted a pic on the QOV Facebook page and someone suggested more white. I ran some errands and came back.

20130611-070240.jpg
Yep, that was the ticket! I still need to add an outer border of the flag fabric. I will have just enough.
I think this will be a really fun one to quilt. But that won’t happen for a while. DH is on a business trip to Asia so I am in charge of lawn care while he is gone. Daughter #3 and I are also getting ready to paint her new room. Her current room will become the guest room. And then there is the day job…..
BTW, if any of my readers in Michigan is looking for a midarm quilting machine, I am ready to sell my Hobby Quilter. I set it up in my family room so anyone interested could try it out. It is stitching beautifully and is cleaned up and ready to go.

Time to get a move on. So much to do today!

Design Wall Monday

This is what is currently hanging on my design wall.

20130610-073102.jpg
A while back, I used my 6″ HST die to cut up a bin of bright fabrics so they would be ready to sew into tops for kid’s quilt. I finally got the first top sewn together this weekend. It measures 42″ x 60″. I hope to get it loaded and quilted this week.
Last week, I got all 6 tops for QBB quilted. Here are finished pics of the one I used the American Flourish panto on.

20130610-073503.jpg

20130610-073511.jpg
I am pretty happy with how this turned out.
I am going to make a king sized quilt for my MIL this summer. Yes, I remember last fall when I made one this size for my son and his wife. I said never again! Eating my words here….oh well, this is one reason I wanted a bigger frame! I may use this panto on the next behemoth…I mean…quilt.
If you want to see what others are working on, head on over to Judy’s blog Patchwork Times.

Quilt of Valor Story

If you have read my blog for even a week, you know that I have  a warm place in my heart for our veterans. I have been a volunteer with the Quilts of Valor Foundation for over a year now. However. this past week was the first time I have presented a quilt to one of our vets in person.

I am a librarian and the branch that I work at has security guards that work in the afternoons. One of our guards has come to be a friend. Mr. Houston Jackson served in Viet Nam when he was just 21 years old. He got to come home a bit early because his son was born while he was overseas. He is now retired but works as a security guard, not for the money, but to be out in the community, to interact with young people, to be a role model. And he is all that and more. He loves the Lord and it shows. He teaches Sunday school and is active in his church. On the days when he is not at the library, he works at one of the toughest high schools in the county. He volunteered for this position because he knows the kids need someone to teach them to respect themselves and others.

I felt a while back that I was to make a QOV for my friend Houston. This past Wednesday, I was able to present it to him in person. ???????????????????????????????

Isn’t that a beautiful smile? He told me that in the 42 years since he left Viet Nam, he has never received anything for his service until I gave him this quilt. He was so appreciative and so shocked that anyone would do something like this for him.  So many of our vets were treated so poorly when they came home. It was such an honor to make and present a quilt to thank him for his service and to finally say to him, “Welcome Home.”

Here is a full picture of the quilt.

???????????????????????????????

And that is why I do what I do. Until next time…
