Design Wall Day 2

I got 132 HSTs sewn today and a few pressed.

Then I started rethinking my plan…can you see where this is going?

20131209-224805.jpg
I am running out of the gray fabric. May have to take a fabric run today though I really didn’t want to.
I also finished these two hooligans tonight.

Before work today, I hope to get gifts for my son’s family wrapped and shipped. Maybe I will have time to press a few more triangles as well…

Design Wall Monday

I started something new this morning. I have had a couple Abbey Road charm packs for a while and finally decided what to do with them.

20131209-101509.jpg

20131209-101527.jpg
I thought it would go well with this solid gray.

20131209-101643.jpg
I just hope I don’t run out of the gray! If i do, it will become a design opportunity….right?

Here are a few pics from Tamale Day.

And the current view out my back door.

I have an awful lot to do today so sewing HSTs will be my reward!

Cookie Day!

Yesterday was Tamale Day and today is Cookie Day! It was great fun learning about making tamales but in no way could I do this myself!

I did get a bit of sewing done last night. I finished the baby quilt and got it loaded into the frame for quilting.

20131208-005803.jpg
I also made a rice bag for my daughter’s stocking.

20131208-005852.jpg
And since she is hosting the cookie exchange today, I decided to make her a little hostess gift. So I embroidered this flour sack towel.

20131208-005957.jpg
I also got this top out again. I am thinking some more about where to go from here with it.

Time to get my cookies out of the oven!

Tamale Day!

One big holiday tradition in my son in law’s family is Tamale Day. The whole family gets together to make tamales.  My daughter and SIL have a big dining room with a 9 foot table so they get to host Tamale Day this year. Since they were married in May, we are now one big family and I get to go too! I am so excited!
I haven’t had any time to sew lately so I thought I would share a very old Christmas quilt with you.

20131207-071137.jpg
I hang this in our powder room every year. It is very hard to take a picture of a quilt hanging in a tiny room.
But if it looks crooked, that is because it is. These were blocks from a guild swap and the quilt was put together in a fit of frustration over never getting anything finished. I have always called this the PMS quilt. I remember forcing things to fit and getting mad when they didn’t. That is how you end up with trees that have no trunks.
And a bottom border that runs downhill.

20131207-071711.jpg
I don’t think it laid flat until I quilted it into submission. But by golly, I got it done!

I am embarrassed to say it , but this is only one quilt in my PMS series.

Some days, I should not be trusted with a rotary cutter…..

On the other hand, Daughter #3 loves this quilt and never let’s me miss a year hanging it up and now it is a tradition.

It’s also a reminder that keeps me humble!

ETA: I  can’t believe how much better this quilt looks in pictures! Trust me, this quilt has nary a 90 degree corner or straight line anywhere. It really is worse in person.

TGIF!

It has been a long week and I am so ready for the weekend! I work this afternoon and then I am off until Tuesday.

This morning I worked a bit on these blocks again. I decided to add strips to two sides of the block to get this effect.

20131206-092257.jpg
I will probably add 3″ borders and call it good.

Last night I was up to a bit of monkey business.

20131206-092406.jpg

20131206-092415.jpg
One is nearly done. Good thing as he has a trip to Arizona ahead of him!

I bought pre-wound bobbins and some new stabilizer from Fil-Tec and wanted to try them out.

20131206-092556.jpg
I am so happy to report that they both worked perfectly! Good thing, I bought a box full.

20131206-092654.jpg
Time to get ready for work. Have a great day everyone!

Thankful Thursday!

I have so much to be thankful for. Here are a few things:

A whole bolt of my favorite batting.

20131205-193723.jpg
New thread for my long arm.

20131205-193809.jpg
A color card from Glide.

20131205-193904.jpg
The decorations my hubby puts up.

20131205-193943.jpg
The reason Christmas is even celebrated.

20131205-194116.jpg
The slippers my hubby bought me.

20131205-194326.jpg

But today, my heart is so very full of thanks for this beautiful baby.

20131205-194453.jpg
My daughter and her husband had their first ultrasound today. Baby Q is due in June.

That makes two grand babies in one year as my son and his wife are due on Valentines Day.

God is so very good.

Work in Progress Wednesday

Getting a late start in blogging today. I worked until 9 last night and didn’t feel like sewing after that. I have decided that the next bed quilt I make will be for me! I will use these Kansas Troubles Wrapped in Paisley charms and layer cake.

20131204-151353.jpg

I haven been working out my plan on EQ7.

20131204-151431.jpg

And choosing my dies:

I also finished the last two dog beds.

I put a bed pillow inside Lucy’s just to get an idea of how it will look when filled. Here is Bambi and Daughter #2:

And here is silly Lucy:

A tiny finish!

My first finish for December!

20131203-054203.jpg
And a peak at the back:

20131203-054236.jpg
I had great fun sneaking in this little quilt for the SQT challenge. I have had this border print scrap for ages and I just love it in this little quilt.

I also got the fleece for the next two dog beds quilted.

20131203-054429.jpg
I used black thread but the stitches sunk in so much, you can hardly tell!

Daughter #1 and I went to the antique mall. I loved this sampler:

20131203-054554.jpg
And I nearly brought this top home:

20131203-054630.jpg

After dinner, Daughter #3 and I made some paper ornaments for our foyer tree.

She made the adorable origami dresses. The map circles represent places that are near and dear to us.

Design Wall Monday

I hope you all had a great weekend! So sorry to have it end. Now onto to Christmas. But first, a wee little me project.

20131202-074459.jpg
The challenge for the Small Quilt Talk group this month is to make something with little sawtooth star blocks. Kathy posted a pattern for 5″ blocks. As you know, I am always changing things so I can use my studio die cutter. So my blocks will be 4″ finished size. They don’t currently make a 1″ finished HST die for the studio so it purchased the GO! die and an adaptor so I can use it with my cutter. I am happy to say my first star is darn near perfect!

Here is one of the finished dog beds, it has a zipper so I can fill it and obviously, I haven’t done that yet.

20131202-074923.jpg
This one will be for this guy.

20131202-075000.jpg

20131202-075025.jpg
I also finished one for this girl.

20131202-075126.jpg
The fleece for the next two are embroidered and on the frame.

20131202-075306.jpg
I am linking up with Judy at Patchwork Times for DWM. Go see what others are working on today. Time to get to work! Have a great day!

Slow Stitching Sunday

I am finally starting some Christmas sewing. I got two of the dog beds finished yesterday and have two more to go. Yesterday, I showed the quilting on the front and this is the bottom:

20131130-214250.jpg
I decided a simple meander would be fast and wouldn’t compete with the plaid.

I also got out this kit that I have been saving.

20131130-214412.jpg
Remember these? I had one when I was a kid and I made them for my kids when they were small. Now they are hugely popular again. I thought I would make them for my upcoming grand babies. If you are squeamish, look away now!

20131130-214610.jpg
A whole box full of monkey parts!

They are all ready for the hand sewing that I hope to do today.

I am linking up with Kathy for Slow Stitching Sunday. Click on over to see what others are stitching today.
