Design Wall Monday

Remember way back last fall when I pieced these blocks?

20140112-214900.jpg
Well, I am back to working with them. I even got a few rows sewn together.

20140112-214955.jpg
I hope to get this top together this week. It will be a surprise just for fun quilt for a friend that I think might need a bit of encouragement.

I also put one of the vintage quilt tops that I got for Christmas from Mr. wonderful loaded into the frame.

20140112-215255.jpg
I am going to quilt a simple grid. I will do all lines one way and then remove the quilt from the frame and reattach it to quilt all the lines going the other way.

I also wanted to say thank you all for your kind comments regarding my Farmer’s Wife and Tree Everlasting quilts. It is always so much fun to share my finishes with like minded people who truly understand the thrill of finishing a quilt!

Tree Everlasting Finish!

I finished! And while it is far from perfect, I am quite pleased with how it turned out.

20140111-210551.jpg

20140111-210602.jpg
The quilting looks pretty decent from a distance. Up close, you can see that I need a lot more practice with freehand continuous curves.

20140111-210829.jpg
The panto fit the white strips perfectly and I would do this again. This will be a Quilt of Valor but I am going to enjoy it here for just a bit first.

Happy Sunday!

Quilting the Tree Everlasting

I started quilting the Tree Everlasting yesterday. I decided to do the cross hatching in the red strips.

20140111-071543.jpg

20140111-071555.jpg
I am happy with the crosshatch but am considering adding more. This is the first time I have done continuous curve freehand (triangles) and it is harder than it looks! The white thread doesn’t help but it isn’t terrible. The thread is Glide and I am using Magnaglide bobbins.

I decided to go with the panto in the white strips and it fits perfectly! I am being VERY careful lining it up but I love how it looks.

20140111-072102.jpg
I am nearly half done and hope to finish today since I don’t have to work. Yay for Saturdays off!

I have been pondering the pure goodness of God lately. It never diminishes, though my awareness of it sometimes does. As we deal with yucky weather, crabby people tired of winter (myself included!), mess, snow, and slush, I am going to try to keep my focus this winter on His blessings and goodness. He always has my best interest at heart. I need to remember this. He is my tree everlasting.

Finish it up Friday!

I finished the binding on my PMSing Farmer’s Wife and took a few pictures in the snow.

20140109-205301.jpg

20140109-205312.jpg
I also finished the Tree Everlasting top.

20140109-205358.jpg
I need to get a backing ready and get it loaded into the frame. I was so excited to quilt this but I think now that it is almost time, I have stage fright. I have been watching YouTube videos on feathers. I also have a panto with feathers and stars that would perfectly fit in these columns. That feels like cheating but I want it done well if I am going to give it away as a Quilt of Valor. Here is the panto:

20140109-210612.jpg
It is called Starstruck and it if from Meadowlyon Designs. I plan to do continuous curves in the triangles and possibly cross hatching in the red columns. Decisions, decisions!

Tree Everlasting Progress

This quilt goes together quickly! These columns aren’t sewn together but I couldn’t wait to get a peek at the pattern.

20140108-232134.jpg
I still have a few more of these HSTs  to go. I am hoping to get this top finished after work today.

20140108-232230.jpg
While I sew, I am listening to this:

20140108-232303.jpg
It is such a great book. I loved A Thousand Splendid Suns and Kite Runner and this one is just as good.

I found a short blurb on the Tree Everlasting pattern in this old book:

20140108-232409.jpg

20140108-232418.jpg
Obviously, mine will not have as many columns. It will probably end up as a Quilt of Valor. I can’t wait to quilt this! I think I will do continuous curve in the triangles and either feathers or cables in the red and write strips.

Work in Progress Wednesday

I got a wee bit of time in yesterday on my Tree Everlasting quilt. All my pieces are cut!

20140107-222421.jpg
I layered the white and red when I ran them through the die cutter so they would be all ready to pick up and sew.

20140107-222525.jpg
No lining up of pieces required! Gotta love a luscious stack of triangles.

20140107-222631.jpg
I even got a few pieced.

20140107-222700.jpg
I am going to love this quilt. Not sure why I waited so long!

Almost done….

I finished quilting the Farmer’s Wife quilt yesterday. I think the farmer’s wife had PMS. The quilting did NOT turn out like I wanted. I used a new thread so I had to fiddle with tension, I quilted a wrinkle into the batting, my feathers are organic (code for unruly and too fat). I am just not happy with the quilting job I did. It looks much better in pictures than in person. Here are some in process shots.

20140107-071839.jpg

20140107-071847.jpg
The quilting is finished and it is off the frame. I hope to get the binding on before work today.

In other news, no school again here today. The roof of our local K-Mart collapsed due to the snow. Thankfully, no one was hurt. Here is the view out my back door.

20140107-072138.jpg
Someone is trying to stay warm in the subzero temps.

And the other grand dog also loves her bed.

Stay warm folks!

Design Wall Monday

What a great day to be inside! All the schools were listed closed last night. I stayed in my pjs all morning yesterday, took a shower, and put clean pjs on! I didn’t get as much done as I should have but I did get the borders on my Farmer’s Wife quilt and get it loaded on the frame for quilting.

20140105-194644.jpg
Now I have to figure out what thread to use.

20140105-194716.jpg
This is Premo-Soft from Fil-Tec. I also have to figure our how to quilt it.

I also changed my mind on the red and white quilt. I decided to make a Tree Everlasting quilt. This is a very old pattern and has been on my to do list for years.

20140105-194917.jpg
I think it will be really fun to quilt. I got my fabrics ready to cut.

20140105-195010.jpg
Well, the red anyway. I am trying to scrounge up enough of the same white without going to the store. This is Mr. wonderful clearing the driveway the first time today.

20140105-195308.jpg
He has done it two more times since. Poor little white dog could get lost in this!

20140105-195412.jpg

20140105-195425.jpg
I am thankful that I don’t have to work today. Be careful out there if you have to go!

Snowy Sunday

Our church services were cancelled this morning due to the weather so we are staying put! Perhaps the Farmer’s Wife will find some borders today. Daughter #2 made it back safely to Arizona before the storm hit. She sent me these pictures.

20140105-090023.jpg

20140105-090035.jpg
Apparently the bed I made for the grand dog was a hit!

I saw this verse this morning:

Her family has warm clothing, and so she doesn’t worry when it snows. Proverbs 31:21

Stay warm and safe!

Saturday…..sigh….

It has been a glorious week with Daughter #2 but alas, she flies back to Arizona today. Sniff, sniff…

I did get a bit of sewing done in odd moments this week.

20140103-231820.jpg
I got my Farmers Wife blocks together. I decided not to add anymore blocks after all. Now I am auditioning borders.

20140103-231925.jpg
I am also starting to think about a red and white quilt.

20140103-232019.jpg
I am thinking about using this 6″ 60 degree diamond die.

20140103-232109.jpg
The piecing would be simple but I think the quilting would be fun. It would become another QOV.

Here is a pic of Daughter #2 and me on her last day here.

20140103-232255.jpg
I miss her already! I am so proud of my airman!
